Sunday Nap

Winnie making herself at home on a table. That's her head in front.

Baseball: not sure of the rule, but it seems like the visiting team shouldn’t have to set it’s batting order in stone until the players take the field in the bottom of the first. That way if the visiting team bats around, the starting player batting ninth can be a better-hitting bench player. Then after three outs the pitcher can take over the nine hole in the batting order. Probably a rule that doesn’t allow it.

Left work Wednesday at four. Made it to the park in decent time, and walked around to the First Base Gate to enter. The line to the team store wasn’t as long as previous nights. Scored a red Columbia PFG Braves shirt. Not sure if they’re still in style, but I guess it’s my style. The game had started by the time I made it to my seat. Hot, bright sun. By the top of the third it had started to rain.

Pederson continues to hit to the opposite field, though the Padres quite shifting on him as much. Bryce Wilson finally cut his long hair and trimmed his shaggy beard. That might’ve effected his pitching. When third base coach Ron Washington fielded a foul ball, my friend Howard Evans made it on TV.

When the rain started falling, I took refuge in Chipper’s Sugarland Lounge, where of course I ate too much ice cream. Was going to stick around for the whole game, but the rain changed my plans. Good thing, as the game was called – at 10:30 pm.

Thursday: Dreamland BBQ for lunch. Renee saved me leftovers for today. Let work yesterday at 4 pm and drove out to the Gwinnett stadium. Saw Hugh for the first time. You had met him at the Gwinnett game we had went to. Met up with his friend Johnny as well as Kevin, who’s just moved to Birmingham. Johnny had rented a luxury box, so Kevin and I spent time up there. The Stripers won. Was late getting home.

Chipper Jones told Dale Earnhardt Jr. which was 'the grossest human being I've ever met in my life'.

With rumors that Herschel is merely considering a Senate run, liberals are already tossing mud, using information Walker himself had shared years ago about his struggles to overcome the disorder that had plagued him his entire life.

JOE MEDWICK  [SABR Bio] his record for the most hits in his first 5 full years in the majors was broken by Ichiro. Medwick had 1,064 hits between 1933-37; Ichiro had 1,130 from 2001-05. Ichiro played in 40 more games (770 for Joe; 810 for Suzuki), but still beat Medwick over his first 770 games with 1,093 hits. In his MVP year, he led the majors in hits and doubles, but led his league in an additional ten offensive categories.  In 1937, Medwick led MLB in hits (237) and doubles (56). He led or tied the NL in games (156), At Bats (633), Runs (111), HR (31), average (.374), SLG% (.641), OPS (1.056), OPS+ (182) & Total Bases (406). Medwick was an all-state football player in high school. Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne had made arrangements for Medwick to play football for the Irish. Medwick chose baseball over football when he signed with the Cards at age 17.

ERNIE BANKS [SABR Bio] won back-to-back MVPs for a team that finished in the second division each year. Won MVP in 1958 & 1959, finishing ahead of eight eventual Hall of Famers each time. The NL had 8 teams before 1962 and Banks’s CHC finished 5th, that is in the second half of the teams, or “second division” in the baseball parlance of the day. Curt Simmons of the Cardinals allowed the 400th career home run to both Willie Mays (on 27-Aug-1963) and Banks (on 02-Sep-1965). His high school, Booker T. Washington HS in Dallas, didn’t have a baseball team when he attended.

Tomorrow: recap of my three day shopping blitz.
Bought three pairs of shoes (and a bunch more).
New Balance Fresh Foam ROAVs and a pair of Nike Blazer high top golf sneakers (for Matthew, or to resell).

Cheap joke of the day: next time the Olympics comes to Atlanta, the sport they’ll add is stock car racin’.
