Miss Shivonne Goes to Washington

Shivonne took her first trip to Washington this weekend.
Will showed her around while Mary-Clayton worked.

Though the cherry blossoms were beautiful,
sleet this afternoon spoiled the blooms.

I’ve read one long book about the Patriots dynasty, and another about Tom Brady. In both it laid out details how Brady had nothing to do with the deflated footballs. Scientific tests proved that footballs, like tires on an automobile, can quickly lose air pressure in a short period of time (an hour or two) when temperature changes – like going from room temperature to temps in the 20’s and 30’s. Brady was made the scapegoat by the press, and was suspended despite no evidence to find him guilty. Before and during games Brady has too many other things on his mind than worrying about the air pressure in the footballs.

By the time all the real evidence came out, everyone had already made up their minds about what had happened based on what the media had been reporting. No one ever reads the retractions that are buried in the back of the paper, only the headlines. Like Michael Jordan, he used this as fuel to motivate another Super Bowl run.

Throughout his time in New England, Tom Brady reduced his salary several times so the team would have more money to get other players. Matt Ryan did this a couple of times, but not as many times as Brady. Besides Michael Jordan, I’ve never seen an athlete with a will to win greater than Brady. As for letters, here’s some of what Brady has written/said…

A couple of months ago, in the last episode of his ESPN+ series about his career, here’s what Tom Brady had to say about the Patriots:

“Coach Belichick and I had for so many years a really great relationship — but it was always player-coach. He was there to coach football, I was there to play football,” Brady said. “He had always said there’s nobody I’d rather have play quarterback for our team than you, and I felt that same way about him as a coach,” Brady said. “I had a great relationship with Coach Belichick. I think he wanted a quarterback to show up every day and put the team first, and I wanted a coach that showed up every day and put the team first. And we found an amazing working relationship together. And I think he was the best coach I could ever ask for,” Brady said. “We had our challenges at different moments, but they were just moments. They don’t define what the relationship was. And in the end we accomplished things that no one had ever accomplished in NFL history.”

Brady reflected on the way owner Robert Kraft shaped his life. “I had 20 of the most incredible years of my life with one team, one owner, Mr. Kraft, who I love so much, who allowed me to grow into the man I am,” Brady said. “The organization was incredible, from the people that I met in the training room to the equipment room to the video room — to everything that makes up a championship organization,” Brady said.

“For me, it all comes back to people. I’ve only been able to accomplish what I have professionally and personally because of the people that have come into my life,” he said. “And so many people came into my life at these moments that were the most important moments at that time for what I needed. Obviously there’s that line — when a student’s ready, the teacher appears. But that’s really been my life. And I think I’ve been open and curious, but raising a family and having a career in football, it all comes down to people and relationships. So that’s what I value the most.”

“That’s the best part — it’s the people,” he said. “It’s not a Super Bowl ring. It’s ‘Man, we did this together.’ And I think that’s what I share with everybody. That’s what I share with my family when we win. Who am I looking for right away when the game’s over? My family. And my teammates, so I can hug them. It’s not going, ‘Man I can’t wait to get up onto the stage so I can glorify myself.’ Just do something joyful with your life. And I found people that I can really be joyful with.”

“Anything that’s bad usually turns out pretty good in the end, because you learn the most,” Brady said. “I’m always trying to find the learning in the losing, and finding the good in the bad. And it’s served me really well. I wouldn’t change anything,” Brady concluded. “I wouldn’t change the good, I wouldn’t change the bad. I take with me the memories and I take the relationships. And there was no better place I could ever be than in New England playing for the Patriots.”

After the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the Broncos, Brady hand wrote a letter to the fans:

Thank you to all of our fans for the incredible support you gave us this season. I’m proud to call New England my home and to have the privledge [sic] of playing for your team. Our team fought hard all year, right down to the final play. I’m proud of the effort we all put in to prepare each game as if it were our last. We never quit nor lost sight of what we were playing for. It’s rare to have the honor of being on a team like that. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to get as far as we did. Our goal every season is to win the last game, but as I’ve learned, the road to the next one is paved by seasons like this one. Thanks again,

Yours truly,

Tom

When the Patriots did not re-sign Brady after the 2019 season, Brady wrote the following in The Players Tribune, a website founded by former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter for players to self-publish their own thoughts and feelings.
