JFBC sermon notes: Ephesians 5:15-21 written by Paul, who was in jail for the third time. He saw this as part of God's plan.
Our setting is different. T Wright wrote: "Where Paul went, there was a riot. Where I go they serve tea".
What is your walk like in Jesus? Be careful how you walk. Okay to take risks. Not in fear, but with purpose.
1. Don't walk as unwise but as wise v 15-16. Devine insight, through God's spirit.into who God is . Psalm 1:1-3 blessed is he who does not walk in the council of the wicked. Why? V 16 making the most of your time. Your time is limited. The days are evil. Creates great opportunities for the gospel. Even for Paul when he was in prison. Los of encouraging words from the believers in Ukraine who are staying to take advantage of the opportunities, taking the church underground.
2. V17 don't be foolish but understand God's will. Don't walk in the futility like the Gentiles, saying there is no God. We understand what God has done. Seek guidance for the important things, the big permanent things, not just the small temporary things. Pray. Ask how can my life change as a result of this? Show the fruit of the spirit, walk like Jesus.
3. V 18-21 don't get drunk but be filled by the Spirit. Doesn't say don't drink, it says don't get drunk. Don't be under the influence of drink. Death to self, alive in Christ.
Four examples of how to do this.
1. V 19 singing and speaking with spiritual songs and words. It's not how but to who we sing.
2. Singing and speaking in your mind and heart., making a joyful noise. Don't critique
3. Always give thanks for all things. Don't complain about the service
4. V 21 subject yourself to one another. Encourage and pray for one another. Put myself under the care and protection of God and other Christians.
