White Socks

White socks are coming back? Good thing. Yesterday I wore white socks with black sneakers and black warmups to break up the black. It had looked good with a different pair of black sneakers and black warmups, but yesterday I was showing a little too much white sock. I looked like George Costanza.

Wednesday night I worked until 7 pm. Had to stop by Kroger on the way home. I haven’t been making many Kroger runs, so this was the first time I had seen The Chief in a long time. We chatted about the Braves for a while. Was 8 pm before I got home. Breakfast for supper: cheesy grits and an eggy boy sandwich.

Ran / walked over 3 miles at the YMCA this AM. Had a pretty decent time considering I’m just starting back, just over 12 minute miles. I’ve been trying not to eat much during the day (protein shakes and the like) but for lunch today I broke down and drove through Burger King. The fries were hot and salty but not too tasty.

For St. Patrick’s Day I am wearing my green Lanier High Poets long sleeve t-shirt. Not as much wearing of the green as there used to be.

Made out my NCAA bracket. Usually I pick all favorites / no upsets, but this year I added a few upsets.

Video of Andy Stanley’s devotional before the Georgia State House of Representatives: there will always be disagreements, but disunity is a choice.

When the Braves moved to their new stadium I tried to take John Parkes to a game, pick him up and take him home, drop him off so he wouldn’t have to walk, but he didn’t want to go.

Interesting about the Greg Norman tournament. Similar I suppose to the Skins Games and other matches.

CLARK GRIFFITH  [SABR Bio] was the first pitcher to homer for the Hilltoppers, on 14-Jul-1903 at Hilltop Park. The team, also then known as the Highlanders, became the Yankees a decade later. Other early nicknames included “Invaders” & “Porchclimbers”. It was the 8th & final HR of Griffith’s 20-year career as a player in the majors. Griffith persuaded two U.S. presidents to take actions that we are grateful for still today. While he was managing the Washington Senators, Griffith persuaded President Taft to begin the custom of the Presidential First Pitch. It was also Griffith who helped convince President Franklin Roosevelt to allow major league baseball to continue during World War II. Toward the end of his career as a player/manager, toward the end of a season, Griffith saw fit to insert himself into a game to pitch to the only batter he would face all season. That batter hit a home run. On 05-Oct-1912, Griffith entered the game to relieve Nick Altrock in the 8th inning to face the batter, Yankee first baseman Hal Chase - who hit an inside-the-park HR. Of note, Yankee RF Jack Lelivelt hit the only 2 home runs of his six-year career in that same game.

DENISON: my purpose today is to make the biblical case that what is happening in Ukraine matters as much to God and should therefore matter as much to us as if it were happening in America. In accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, Dr. King stated, "I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant."

Today is St. Patrick's Day. We should remember his story: kidnapped and enslaved before returning to Ireland as a missionary. He led more than 100,000 to Christ. But there's more: Irish Christians who were spiritual descendants of St. Patrick's ministry sailed to Britain in the following century, where they evangelized the country. According to Thomas Cahill's How the Irish Saved Civilization, they "single-handedly refounded European civilization throughout the continent." As a result, every American owes a debt to St. Patrick's courageous ministry and his spiritual descendants who preserved the benefits of Western civilization we enjoy today. President John F. Kennedy was right: "Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet." What happens to any of us should therefore matter to all of us.
