PHIL RIZZUTO [SABR Bio] was the Yankee broadcaster known to mark certain plays in his scorebook with “WW”. The Scooter used the WW notation to admit that he “Wasn’t Watching”. As a player, he made history by being the first American League player to wear a batting helmet in a regular-season game, in 1953. Ralph Kiner was the first leader in the NL. Rizzuto partnered with Yogi Berra to open a bowling alley, an enormous 40-lane bowling alley in Clifton, New Jersey. They didn’t work too hard on the name.
PEE WEE REESE [SABR Bio] was the only Dodger to take Don Larsen to a full count during Larsen’s perfect World Series game in 1956. Before striking out looking in the first, Reese had worked the count full, the only time that day any Dodger batter had three balls in a count. Reese’s ratio of championships to total World Series played is the lowest ever, 14.29%. Played on the losing side in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953 & 1956. He was on the championship side in 1955 - one out of seven. Reese worked as a cable splicer for the phone company in high school, only playing amateur baseball in a Louisville church league.
