Bama is good, but got lucky. Auburn played their game of the year. The War Eagles beat themselves. They had Bama backed up, 4th & goal from the 35 yard line. Bama had to score on that play. Auburn did a good job keeping Milroe in the pocket - but he stood back there for a full 7 seconds - an eternity for a secondary to have to cover receivers. Touchdown.
We were over at our friend's house, about to eat supper (Jim & Nicks BBQ, collards, macaroni & cheese, baked beans, and salad). Knowing Auburn led, I asked that the TV be flipped over to CBS. Didn't realize the two Georgia Southern grads had been watching their Eagles lose to App State.
When Bama scored, I let out a shriek. Unbelievable.
Then Auburn didn't down the kickoff in the end zone, instead burning seconds running the ball out - and only getting out to the 15 - and then getting into a fight. Granted at that point it was the Bama defenders who needed to be careful not to be kicked out of the first half of next week's SEC championship game.
Better for UGA that Bama won this week. Would be tough enough Bama win next week for the Dawgs. Milroe gonna be hard to contain.
Next week Bama vs UGA should be a good game. Of course we'll be at a work dinner, at Frankie's Steakhouse way over near the Gwinnett Arena.
To say Bama got lucky is a misnomer. Good teams find their luck, bad teams dig their own graves. Going into that 4th down play. Auburn had a 99.9% chance of winning.
Similar to UGA@GT. Jackets played their best game all year. They came to play. After facing Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, it was hard for all those 18-20 year old Dawgs to get up to play 6-5 Tech, a team Georgia had beaten over ten straight times in Atlanta.
As usual the Dawgs fell behind early. Tech fans were thinking they were going to win. UGA defense giving up a lot of yards on the ground. Receivers Bowers and McConkey and Rosemy-Jacksaint were all held out of the game.
Dawgs allowed two critical turners, one an interception in the end zone. Also several penalties that called back a few big gainers. FSU down 12-0 early, but came back to lead 17-15 and win what, 24-15? Louisville lost to Kentucky.
Herbstreit predicted that LSU QB Jayden Daniels will win the Heisman. I tend to agree.
Oklahoma State edged BYU, and advanced to the conference championship game. My friend Jim had tickets to the game, but instead traveled back to Atlanta.
Undefeated Washington held on to beat Washington State 24-21 on a las second field goal. Would've been nice if they could've lost.
Clemson finally got to break out their orange "championship" pants, to wear in the "state championship" game against SC. The pants must've worked.
Fox college football pregame has 6 guys stuffed behind the desk: the host, Matt Leinert, Brady Quinn, Charles Woodson, Mark Ingram, and Urban Meyer. Plus three announcers I've never heard of, calling this week's "game of the year". Fox does have Tom Renaldi on one of the sidelines. Not sure why Renaldi ever left ESPN college gameday. More money and less work?
Michigan in all black, or navy, or whatever color it is. Not much maize. Michigan beat Ohio State. The Wolverines will be a formidable playoff opponent. Will the Buckeyes still make the playoff? They don't get my vote. Poor Ryan Day. The pressure of coaching at Ohio State. Not sure why Texas A&M would want him if he can't win the big one.
Early Saturday AM golf. I've hit a lot of shots this week. I've improved my chipping. Couldn't be worse. Decent putting as well. I can putt when I concentrate. Still have room for improvement. But man on the tee and in the fairway it feels like I've never hit a golf ball before. Need to practice - you think?
After golf I drove to the office. Worked two hours. Knocked out a pile of work. Got an early start decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby (with flair from my coworker Angie's desk).
Bought a nice grey Gwinnett Stripers quarter zip on eBay for a good price. Size large, so it won't hang off me. Then I thought - I don't already have one, do I? (no). I do need to clean out my closet.
After church today C wanted me to drive her to Costco. I grabbed their foot long hot dog & soft drink deal. She was watching Jaguars @ Texans on her phone. Jags just scored a TD pass from Trevor to Ridley on a square in pattern, then converted the 2-point conversion using the exact same play. 21-14 Jacksonville. Jags woud hold on to win, as did the Falcons. Good looking game, with the Saints wearing throwback-type unis as well.
Million dollar idea: pie with crust not only on the bottom and top, but also in the middle…between two layers of filling.
