The Braves are losing a highly paid, poor-fielding outfielder hitting .213. Any replacement will probably hit and field better, be it Ender Inciarte, Ehire Adrianza, Guillermo Heredia, Christian Pache, or Abraham Almonte. Plus there's a good chance the Braves won't have to pay the rest of Ozuna's salary, so they can go out and sign a decent player, perhaps Kris Bryant of the Cubs. The players have stopped posing for selfies and using the "mix it up" sign, moving on to other celebrations.
Not sure what the Braves will be doing with all those Ozuna sleeves and bobbleheads they were going to give out. Usually in cases like that they will put a different players' head on the body.R.I.P. MIKE MARSHALL [Obit] was the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award, in 1974. Born in Michigan, went to high school in Michigan, college in Michigan, got a PhD in Michigan and played his first game in the majors in Michigan for a team based in Michigan. Born in Adrian, MI, just over the border from Toledo, OH; Attended Adrian High School; Attended Michigan State University as an undergraduate, but where he also received his doctorate. Was signed by DET; his first game was 31-May-1967 at Tiger Stadium. He holds the AL record for most pitching appearances in a single season, with 90 for MIN in 1979 - two years before the end of his major league career. He also holds the record for most pitching appearances in a major league season, an amazing 106 games in 1974 for LAD. No pitcher has come within 10 games in any season in the 46+ years since. No other pitcher has ever pitched more innings in relief in a single season. Pitched 208⅓ innings in 1974 without a start.
During his slightly more than two seasons with the Dodgers he pitched in exactly half of their games. Made 194 appearances over 388 games in 1974-76. His first game with the Dodgers was in the same game where Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run, on 08-Apr-1974. He pitched three innings in relief of Al Downing. Marshall was famous for the same pitch favored by Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell, the screwball. He spoke at the same SABR conference as Jim Bouton. Marshall addressed the gathered SABR crowd in 2006 in Seattle at SABR 36. Listen here.
Will used to like to swing at the first pitch. Oftentimes the defense might be back on their heels for the first pitch. Swing at that first pitch. Like you say it is probably the best pitch you'll see. Seems like they'd have scouting reports for stuff like that. The pitcher should want to get ahead in the count.
Shoes of the day: wore my blue adidas Lite Racers for the first time.
