Back to Ponko

Left work Friday just after 5:30. Took Ceil to Ponko Chicken in Alpharetta. Very good. Drove around Alpharetta a bit and stopped by Whole Foods at Avalon.

The Braves were well represented at the all star game. In addition to Freid, Acuna, Riley, Dansby, d'Arnauld, and Contreras, I'm sure Snit brought along his entire coaching staff and trainers. Probably his bullpen catcher as well.

The Contreras brothers were both all stars.

Watched a new show on Netflix: Extraordinary Attorney Koo, about a Korean lawyer with autism. Since it’s in Korean, we have to read the subtitles. Watched episodes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night.

Up early Saturday to golf. Then straight to Roswell for an oil change. Picked up a breakfast baconator at Wendy’s. At noon I met friends Lee, Rob, and Shawn at Righteous Que for lunch. Good conversation. We all had sons struggling to find their way in life, but with encouraging reports to share.

Worked outside in the heat the rest of the afternoon, clearing the back where the deck had been torn out, and pulling out the ivy on the far side of the house. Wore dri-fit long sleeves and long pants to ward off bug bites (also bug spray) but still got bitten. Watched some of the British Open, and cut the grass. A 10,000 step day for sure.

In Sunday School we heard missionaries from Cambodia speak. Our church commissioned another new missionary, a young man who will be attending graduate school in a country in the Middle East who doesn’t welcome Christians. The young man had gone to high school with our Matthew. Clay preached a good sermon about Samson. We are Christians living in a postmodern non-Christian society, so businesses are open all day Sunday (except Chickfila) so employees have to work. Makes it more tempting for churchgoers to break the Sabbath as well, shopping, running errands, etc.

Watched the end of the British Open, and took a nap. Laundry. Sent M out to pick up supper. He brought back a feast from Little Rey on Piedmont. When C went out shopping I was able to watch one of my shows. Maybe when I retire I can listen to all the sermons I want to hear. Every so often Andy Stanley will have a real interesting sermon series.

Up early to lift weights at the gym this morning.

Will and Anna are feeling better. MC and Shiv were still not feeling well. My friend Lee is retiring on Oct 3. Says he doesn’t have any hobbies but will be going on one or two mission trips each year. He wakes early and goes to bed early. Goes on walks at 5 am and goes into the office at 6 am. My other friend Reid needed a new car, and just got one. Drove his old car until it wasn’t worth anything. Engine still runs well but too many other issues.

I had run into Brady Gailey years ago back when we were going to North Point.

BUCK FREEMAN [SABR Bio] is the only major leaguer ever with a season where he had 25 home runs, 25 triples, and exactly twenty-five strikeouts, in 1899 with the NL’s Washington Senators. His walks total was only 23, but rose to 25 the following season. He was the first batter to lead both the NL and the AL in home runs. Led the NL with 25 in 1899 for WHS, and the AL with 13 in 1903 for BOS. He hit the most home runs while William McKinley was POTUS, from 1897-1901. During that time Freeman hit 46 homers. It’s all the more impressive since Freeman hit none in 1897 and only three in 1899.

Batters with 20 home runs and 20 triples in the same season. Each hit 20 doubles as well.

DENISONthe way all relational truth claims work: we examine the evidence, but we must step beyond the evidence into a commitment that becomes self-validating. You cannot prove a job is the right job for you until you take it. You examine the evidence, to be sure, but then you step beyond the evidence into a personal commitment that validates or invalidates your decision.
