A Dog Named Winnie

Watched the first three episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” the Hulu dramedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez.  A throwback to the old crime investigation shows of yesteryear. Tons of star cameos, like Nathan Lane, Sting, and Jayne Lynch. I’m hooked. Excellent TV despite all the un-needed foul language. Martin Short’s dog has the same name as our puppy. How cool is that.

Speaking of Winnie, she didn’t want to go out in the rain last night, before bedtime. Still, no accidents that I was aware of. She marveled at the lightning, not really scared. She did go sleep in the bathroom.

500 foot home runs vs 400 foot home runs. Wonder if the ball was wound tighter back in the day. In Ruth’s time and probably Mantle’s, players swung heavier bats. Also I wonder about the accuracy of the measurements. Still, no arguing where the balls landed.

Riley made several key defensive plays Tuesday night. The kid is a hoss. Fans talk about signing someone like George Springer or some other all-star third baseman and moving Riley to left field, but they’re playing with Monopoly money. Camargo is tearing it up down at Gwinnett. Duvall is hitting home runs but has a low average. Pederson is a good player, but a low average. Pache and Waters are having good years in Gwinnett. Acuna will be back. Maybe Ozuna will return, but I doubt it.  Braves extended catcher d’Arnault but Contraris is improving at Gwinnett, and their top draft pick catcher is hitting and catching well.

Soroka, Fried, Morton, Anderson, Ynoa are five good starters plus Muller, Touki, and that other -son pitcher on the DL. Remember it took a few years for Glavine and Smoltz to get over their struggles. Just need better relievers to go with Luke Jackson. The Braves really need to market Luke Jackson. Well-spoken, great personality, a Christian. Not the best dresser though.

Wednesday lunch: left the office at 11:35. Lots of traffic lights. Had my 10 minute meeting. On the way back I stopped at Cheeseburger Bobby’s. Good burger. Good bun. Good fries. Lots of fries. While eating I saw the Condra update. Decided to eat inside the restaurant, so I didn’t get back until 1:15. Then problems logging back onto the computer. Went to the Wednesday night Braves game as well.

Thursday dinner from the Golden Nugget seafood restaurant.

Frantically working all Friday morning. Then to a wedding in the evening.

JOE DiMAGGIO  [SABR Bio] was the first outfielder to win the Most Valuable Player award three times, in 1939, 1941 & 1947. He was the first American League rookie to lead the majors in triples since the end of the Dead Ball era, with 15 in 1936.

He is the youngest player ever with a 400-total bases season. In his sophomore season at age 22, he led the majors with a remarkable, career high 418 total bases. Seven times in his thirteen-season career, his home run total exceeded his strikeout total, in 1937 (46/37), 1938 (32/21), 1939 (30/20), 1940 (31/30), 1941 (30/13), 1946 (25/24) & 1948 (39/30).

MICKEY MANTLE [SABR Bio] is the only switch-hitter to win his league’s Most Valuable Player Award in consecutive seasons. AL MVP in 1956 & 57 He’s also the first switch-hitter to finish second in MVP voting in consecutive seasons, in 1960 & 61. In both those years the winner was his teammate, Roger Maris. Switch-hitter Eddie Murray finished second behind Robin Yount in 1982 then teammate Cal Ripken in 1983. Mantle once made it all the way to second base on a mishandled third strike. As the first batter in the bottom of the 6th inning on 24-May-1951, he faced Detroit pitcher Bob Cain. Cain’s third strike was mishandled and by the time catcher Joe Ginsberg located the ball, rookie Mantle stood on second base.
