The list of people I know who run the Peachtree Road Race seems to grow shorter every year. As always, the Peachtree is much more of an event than a race. Way too many people to be able to run unencumbered to post a good time. Too much weaving around the scores of walkers spread across all six lanes of traffic. Most people I know stop to visit with friends and family all along the way.
These times mean little. So much better to enjoy he journey. In particular I enjoyed giving five, pounding fists, and making eye contact with the wheelchair patients at Shepherd Spinal Center, and various kids along the way. Kelly Curran told of finding a young boy who had lost his mother during the race. Kelly cheered him up and ran with him to the finish, where she was able to reunite the boy with his mom. That’s what the Peachtree is all about.
Considering where they started, the most impressive finished were turned in by Graham, Scott Morris, Jules, and Jason.

When I stopped at Bellwood Coffee to visit with Shivonne and Millie, I stopped my watch for 7:14. My 1.30.01 does not include that visit – but it does include the several minutes I stopped at SPdL to visit with Reid, Edie, Barbara, Nancy, and Deborah. Since Will arrived at Bellwood before me, I deducted 8 minutes from his “official” time of 1.20.01.
There were 43567 finishers, 22487 men.
Deborah Light did not run this year - someone used her number. I had several friends run, but used someone else’s number: Nathan Hall JFBC, Larry Ragan, Addie Norman ECPC (Charles’ wife). Addie had a number in the back of the pack, but used someone else’s number to be up near the front.
The t-shirt wasn’t quite as horrendous as the previous two years. The design was pretty nice, and it was a nice shade of red. My beef was that the logo was placed so far down on the shirt – not on the chest, but on the belly. Not a good look at all. Unless you are the Nickell family.
When you sign up for the Peachtree, they make you agree to wear the shirt when you go out to your other 4th of July activities. Believe it or not, I hate to be the center of attention. But I wore the shirt to my cookout, so I got asked lots of questions. Wasn’t too terrible. Joe Mayfield even called me a stud. I asked him to repeat himself, so I could get it on camera.
