Candler Park Reopens

Played golf this morning for the first time since early April. Candler Park had been closed to make over their greens. You can tell they’ve done some work on the entire course. Not sure what I was expecting, but I was kinda underwhelmed. The grass on the greens are lusher, but there are still plenty of bald spots. I teed off in the dark with my lighted balls, and used them on the first four holes. Played well, considering I hadn’t picked up a club in 4 months.

1. Teed off at 630 am. Hit two decent 6 irons off the tee, the first way left but the second straight. Found a ball in the left rough. Pretty good fairway shot. Hit two chips, both over the green. Three putts back, two past the hole. Missed the comebacker. Double.

2. Two okay 6 irons off tee, considering the lighted balls don’t travel as far. Found another ball. Chipped three balls, only one stuck on the green. Missed the par putt. Bogey.

3. A pretty good tee shot, to the fringe. Missed the birdie putt. Par.

4. Hit an okay tee shot, then hit a great mulligan that rolled off the back of the green. Shot of the day, considering it was a light up ball. Hit two good chips out of three. Missed the par putt. Bogey.

5. Pulled two 6 irons into the woods on the left, but one bounced out into the fairway. Hit 2 good chips out of three. Missed the long lag putt for par. Bogey.

6. Decent hybrid off the tee. Pretty good 5 iron down the fairway. Hit 3 good chips out of four. Missed the long par putt. Bogey.

7. Pretty good hybrid off the tee, most of the way up the hill. Pretty good 6 iron down the fairway. Good chip to the fringe. I had hit three shots and was putting for par. Missed. Bogey.

8. Pulled out my driver for the first time. My ball clipped the trees on the right but still got decent distance. Hit three 7 irons down to the green. First one was short, the second to the back fringe. Never found the third one. It probably went into the creek behind the green. Two putt for par.

9. Flubbed two tee shots. Hit two good approach shots. Just missed a par putt. Bogey. Finished at 749 am.

After work yesterday I got my birthday sundae at Culvers, then a free burger and fries at Red Robin. I also got an oreo milkshake since I had to spend five bucks. The steak fries were piping hot, though as usual it took an act of congress to get a second helping. The shake was good, but the straws at Red Robin are super thin. Stopped by a Goodwill on the way home.

Watched the new Match game, hosted by Martin Short. Panelists included Selena Gomez, Kevin Nealon, and Anthony Anderson. I love Martin Short, but Match Game is pretty low brow “humor”.

I had lunch today at Cheeseburger Bobbys (above). While I was waiting on my order I noticed they had saltshakers with different flavors, so I put BBQ flavoring on half my fries, and ranch flavor on the other half. Good, but not earth shattering.

Ceil is meeting an old friend tonight, Susan Coley, who recently turned 50.

CHAN HO PARK [B-R Bio] was the first player from Japan to be named to an All-Star team, in 2001. On 23-Apr-1999, in Dodger Stadium, STL’s Fernando Tatis hit two grand slams in one inning off Park. In total, 30 players have homered twice in an inning. Park surrendered Barry Bonds's 71st and 72nd home runs on 05-Oct-2001 in San Francisco.

Do you have a favorite meal at Howard Johnsons? I have no memory of ever staying at a Howard Johnsons, or eating there. But we rarely went on trips when I was a kid. One time we went to Montgomery and I think we stayed at the Heart of Dixie Hotel. Or maybe we just rode by it.

Tim Keller: “We instinctively tend to limit for whom we exert ourselves. We do it for people like us, and for people whom we like. Jesus will have none of that. By depicting a Samaritan helping a Jew, Jesus could not have found a more forceful way to say that anyone at all in need—regardless of race, class, and religion—is your neighbor. Not everyone is your brother or sister in faith, but everyone is your neighbor, and you must love your neighbor.”
