The Cliff Clavin Look

I had grown my beard out for a couple of weeks leading up to our beach trip, then shaved this past Monday morning – keeping a mustache for the guys in the office. The mustashe was a hit in the office, and at the Monday night men’s Bible Study – but not with Ceil. She said I looked like Cliff Claven, the loser on the old sitcom Cheers. I had planned to shave it this morning anyway (and I did), but that was the icing on the cake. Matthew liked it, saying I looked like a fireman – and firemen are cool heroes, he said. Didn’t change Ceil’s mind.

I really am not a fan of beards and moustashes. Back in the day it seemed like almost no respectable professional men wore them. Then they became a thing, and guys seemed to think they were unique with a beard. What I especially hate are guys with grey beards, and grey goatees. I’d never have a goatee. Then mustashes became a thing and I really don’t like them. So this morning I shaved off my mustashe and the guy that loves them the most hasn’t said anything (he has had a busy day). Leo noticed, but I work right next to him.

I have always loved sports, and still do. So envious and proud of Lang for his job, getting to talk and write about sports for a living. But man so many guys get so worked up, or at least act like they do, like Frank the Tank in New York. Guess I am just not as emotionally invested as I used to be. Everyone is different but for some people they have to act all worked up because it’s their job, and they need people to watch them. So many react without knowing or thinking about what led up to the decision to bring in a pitcher, etc – things that fans don’t know the details of.

This new girl Ava at work had been out of town, and met her mom in the parking lot to give her mom her cat. But the cat escaped and ran into some kudzu next to the plant. So Ava and her mom and others were searching in the kudzu before they finally recovered the cat. So now when I miss a call, I say I was out in the kudzu looking for a cat.

I am told that I need to watch a funny show called “I Think You Should Leave”.

Thursday: Ceil baked a chicken last night. Fixed corn on the cob and a rice dish with chili mixed in. M came home and we discussed his plans to move out in September, into a rental house in Smyrna. He’ll take a bunch of furniture that we have in the garage, so hopefully I can park my car in there again this winter.

Friday: eating Mexican at the Rice’s, with our friends the Hongs and Halls. Tomorrow: golf, a thrift store, taking C’s car to the car wash, a slice from the Cheesecake Factory, a Chickfila Milkshake, and then I’ll mow the lawn.

ESPN published an all-time AP All-American team. Grok says Herschel is the greatest player in college history. QB is Tebow, which is correct. Herschel is joined in the backfield with Barry Sanders, also the correct choice.

Jim Denison’s son Ryan, a frequent contributor to Jim’s daily devotions, reviews the Netflix movie “KPop Demon Hunters”: “the story revolves around three girls who use magical powers to slay demons, while maintaining a barrier between their world and the underworld by inspiring people with their singing. Everything is going well until the demon overlord sends a demonic boy band to steal their fans and destroy the barrier. We all really enjoyed it. The central themes of owning your flaws and finding strength in community were solid and biblical, even if the makers of the film did not intend to highlight Christian concepts. While there were some conversations we had to have with our kids once it was done, it felt like a solid use of our time, and I can understand why it has grown so popular. Unfortunately, not every reason the film resonates with people is a cause for celebration. And its popularity reveals an important truth about the state of our culture and a threat we cannot afford to overlook.”
