Psalm 62

Psalm 62:1-12
Bobby Smith JFBC worship pastor

v 5-8 Don't bore us, get to the chorus. Psalm 62 is a well written psalm, written to the choir master. This psalm was used in worship.

What we do isn't so people will look at me, but so people will be drawn to God.

v 1 his focus is on God, stating that his life is built on God. Don't live for less.

v 3-4 they bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. They attack their enemies. King Saul trusted young David, but became embittered by David, and wanted him dead. Absolam betrayed him.

The lesson: people will fail you. Community is important, but only God doesn't disappoint.

Galatians 1:10 am I seeking the approval of God or man?

Selah, a literary device, to pause between two sections of a passage.

v 5-7 my refuge is God.

v 1 my soul waits in silence, for God alone

v 2 - I shall not be greatly shaken

v 6 - I shall not be shaken

v 8 the bridge: trust in God at all times, he is our refuge. It is worth it to wait on Him.

God keeps you waiting until the world around us becomes quiet.

v 9-10 if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

As a kid in the arcade Bobby spent $25 trying to get a Michael Jordan card out of the claw machine, but failed. Later in college he lost $2000 in a ponzi scheme. Lessons learned.

Wealth and power are not wrong, but living for them is.

Matthew 16:26 for what will it profit a man…

2 Cor 8:1-5 we want you to know about the grace of God…the Macedonia church is known for their poverty but also their joy and generosity.

Psalm 62:11 power belongs to God, and also steadfast love. Some hear once. David heard this twice.

God's love does not give up. Power without love is brutality. Love without power is weakness. Why God's power is so powerful.

Two takeaways:
1. See it, say it, surrender it. There is power in confession. Watch what the Lord will do
>
2. Practice being in the presence of God, unhurried.
