Tracking miles walked / run on a US map: I was thinking how I can go back on all my scrapbook calendars (dating back to 1983) to get the miles I have walked / run. Before that I could log off 365 miles per year, since I average walking a mile a day at minimum. I know its not the same. I might chart one walk from 1959-1982 (8395 miles), another from 1983-2025 using my calendar info,, then start out on a new journey in January 2026.
The Appalachian Trail is 2200 miles, from Springer Mountain GA to Mount Katahdin Maine. Yhe Pan American Highway goes from Prudhoe Bay laska to Ushuaia Argentina, and is 19000 miles. The longest walk from one point to another is from Cape Town South Africa to Magadan Russia, a distance of 14000 miles: two continents, 16 countries, six time zones. Walking from the tip of South America to Nova Scotia would 16000 miles.
I read a book about an author who drove 16000 miles from Key West to Deadhorse Alaska, pulling an Airstream trailer and spending nights in campgrounds. The Longest Road, by Philip Caputo – but he weaved his way through the US.
I recently saw a map that drove through all of the lower 48 states, with a stop at one state park or landmark in every state – so everyone had a starting point close by. Similarly, in 1996 the Olympic torch route started in LA and went through most states.
Reasons why the Amish have a 4% obesity rate: Amish men walk over 18000 steps per day. Farm raised meats, vegetables picked fresh that day, no refined sugar, only honey or maple syrup, sauerkraut for gut health, bone broth for collagen. Chores before breakfast. Never sitting more than 20 minutes without moving. Lunch is the biggest meal. No drinks with meals. No TVs or phones. Wake up early, without alarms. Then outside into the morning sun to set their internal clock. Apple cider vinegar 15 minutes before 3 meals. Go to bed at 9 pm. They’re never alone. Strong social and family bonds.
Hearing about the corporate CEO whose affair became public knowledge at a Coldplay rock concert, and the team mascots and other people have been making fun of what happened…reminds me of the time Michael Jackson brought his baby out onto a balcony, then almost dropped the baby over the rail. This was before the internet, but I think it was David Letterman who made fun of Michael Jackson in a skit.
Once I went off to GT, I went home the first summer or two, then after that stayed in Atlanta over the summers. Never went back.
Ashley is older than me but still works, doing stuff that he enjoys and isn’t too taxing. I wouldn’t mind working after I quit this job, but something I enjoy more. Years ago Ashley went into a business with Steve Suggs and Steve’s friend Reid Meyer. Seems like that continued on for several years. Ashley also has lunch every month or so with David Hurt and David’s brother. They lunch at the last Mad Italian in Atlanta, up off 285 on Savoy Road near the bowling alley, across 285 from FBC Atlanta.
