Yesterday W&MC drove up to the mountains west of Asheville to camp.
The mountaintop was filled with couples getting pictures taken. One couple was getting married. Their view of the sunset was blocked by a couple taking pictures. Looked chilly.
Anna stayed home, mixing cocktails with friends.
Have a good weekend? I had an interesting three days. Friday afternoon Matthew stopped by to pick up another load of his stuff, on the way to work. After five I spent time cleaning up and organizing in places he hung out.
Watched two movies: Playing It Cool, with Michelle Monaghan, and Focus, where Will Smith plays a con man.
Saturday morning I walked down by the Chattahoochee with my friend Rob. Walked over three miles in under an hour. Came home and turned on ESPN College Game Day while I did the dishes and laundry. Washed the deck and siding and garage doors. Cleaned the windows in the garage. Transplanted some creeping grass to areas of the yard that needed it. Aired out the sofa cushions. Had the TV tuned to SC@Florida, EastCarolina@GeorgiaState, and TexasA&M@Alabama.
Watched the UGA/Auburn game in the backyard of my other friend Reid, with three couples around a firepit. Ate chili, apple pie, and ice cream. Didn't get home until after 11 pm.
On line Sunday School. Walked over to Rob's house for lunch. He grilled chicken, burgers, onions, and peppers. Also tossed salad and coconut dessert. Didn't get home until after four. Napped and watched the Bills/Raiders game. Also Seinfeld on 60 Minutes while I folded laundry.
O RLANDO CEPEDA [SABR Bio] was voted MVP the year after he won a Comeback Player of the Year Award - UPI CPY in 1966; NL MVP in 1967. Only Cepeda & Albert Pujols have won a unanimous Rookie of the Year and a unanimous MVP in the NL. (In the AL, Frank Robinson & Mike Trout have also done this). Cepeda led the league in home runs one season (not his comeback or MVP year) and nobody noticed. Orlando led the NL with 46 HR in 1961 as Maris and Mantle zeroed in on Babe Ruth’s season record of 60. Cepeda’s teammate Willie Mays was a distant 2nd in the NL with 40.
Later I watched the movie At Middleton, starring Andy Garcia and Vera Farminga. Both had daughters in the film.
Cepeda was unanimously voted Rookie of the Year in 1958, but was still not as famous a baseball players as his father “El Toro” Cepeda was in Puerto Rico. His father’s passing hit him hard. He spent his rookie signing bonus on his father's funeral. Cepeda came within an inning of being history’s first designated hitter. In a game between Boston and New York, Ron Blomberg drew a walk in the top of the 1st inning. Cepeda was the first batter in the bottom of the 2nd. He struck out.
I need to check out USAA Insurance, the official insurance company of the NFL. The new Jake from State Farm wears red Puma RS-X sneakers in his commercial with Aaron Rodgers.
