All Saints Day

All Saints Day was mentioned in my Sunday School class recently. I wanted to ask the teacher afterwards about the books he's referenced during the lesson, in addition to the Bible verses he had used. Wish I had taken notes during the class. Cool that SPdL honors the recently passed during this service.

Reminds me of the story of the little boy standing in the vestibule of the church, looking at a plaque on the wall. He asked the usher what the list of names was about. The usher replied "These are the men who died in the service." The boy asked "Which one, the 8:30 or 11 o'clock service?

Back in high school I started going to a different church than my family because I was interested in a girl. Later my family started going to that new church. We all got baptized in 1975 on Easter Sunday. When I went off to Tech I followed my best friend from Macon to the GT Baptist Center. There I made friends with the group that went to SPdL – Fred O, Norman, Yearwood, Wayne Smith, Don Sells, etc. There I met Glenn Cowart, who moved to SC and went to the same singles group as Ceil. I met C when I was visiting Glenn.

I loved the old SPdL days back in the late 70's / early 80's with 8:30 worship singing in the Chapel Choir, Sunday School, choir practice, and Sunday evening worship.  Also Wednesday night, plus the volleyball afterwards in the gym. Special events like Friday night movie nights in the fellowship hall, various banquets, and talent shows and churchwide picnics.

Sermon notes: Clay Smith 10/31/2021.

Ephesians 4:1-6: before the books and chapters of the Bible were divided and numbered, the writers used transition words like therefore to move on to different subjects.

What does it look like to be the church? How can we be we in the age of me?

Title: Loving people you don't always like. Ministry would be easy if it weren't for all the hard to get along with people. We are designed to connect with people.

Qualities needed for happiness faith family friends meaningful work we want truth something to belong to. Relationships are tough so much division toxic tribalism the older you are social media helps, but for young people social media causes loneliness and division.

We live in a world that creates division and individualism. Great awakenings came about by preaching movements. Not me and Jesus but what about We and Jesus. How can we become a loving gospel community?

1. We got to want it bad. Gotta stop being addicted to social media. Gotta want to be healthy. Verse one walk in a manner worthy. Uses the word that how you want to live matches with how you actually live. Matthew 4:19 starts with following Jesus. A loving church needs to be filled with loving individuals.

Atlantic magazine article the evangelical church is falling apart. How many people look at JFBC and see the face of Jesus?

2. We have to recognize that the mission is hard. Acts 2: the mission was easy. But keep reading-division sets in, debates, etc. instead humility, meekness, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another in love, being diligent, working hard to keep the peace, and being a servant. These things are needed to achieve the mission. But they're hard to do. We need to forgive others for not being God, for not giving us things that we can only get from God. Bonhoeffer book Life Together. This takes work.

3. We need to pull one another to the gospel. If God can live in harmony with his son and the Holy Spirit, we need to live in harmony with other Christians. Others won't find harmony in a sports team or political party. Are we a subway church or campfire church? On a Subway people are together but not connected. At a campfire people are connected in harmony.

People left the church for both sides of the issue: because we require masks, because we don't require masks. People come together because of the gospel of Jesus.

I took a quick poll about what people's religion was. 70% Christian, 30% other (including 1% Muslim 1% Hindu 1% Buddhist).

The ESPN SportsCenter Instagram account went over a week without posting something about the World Series, reports Barstool Sports (I checked and it's true: after posting about the Dodgers in the NLCS, SportsCenter posted nothing about the World Series until the Braves took the lead Tuesday night in the climatic game six.

Ate down on Chattahoochee last night, at Nuevo Laredo Cantina. Very good. Chicken burrito. Got home and it was pretty much time for bed.

Had to drive down to Georgia Tech this morning to deliver a 125 pound piece of metal. Traffic wasn't too bad.

During baseball season I keep this baseball on my desk. When the Braves hit a particularly rough patch I might change the positioning of the ball. Sometime after the all-star break I topped the ball with the Braves batting helmet cup I'd gotten my ice cream in at a game.  Now you know why the Braves won the World Series.
