Meeting Shivonne

Man I am tired. After not getting in until 1:30 Sunday night, yesterday I left work at 4 pm so we could leave the house at five. Ceil wasn’t ready, so after I took Winnie outside I went upstairs and laid down on the bed. Fell into a deep sleep, if only for five minutes.

Battled rush hour traffic for 45 minutes down to W&MC’s. They had gotten home with the baby around 2 pm, after stopping by Chickfila on the way. While MC rested, Will took Shivonne for a walk on the Beltline. She had her eyes wide open looking around. Back home she fell asleep for most of the time we were there.

Ceil held the baby first. W&MC’s dog Okie came over to me, stepped up on the couch, then turned and laid down in my lap. Okie has done great with the baby.

Matthew had made chili and baked jalapeno cornbread, but then felt a little under the weather, so he didn’t make the trip. After supper we cleaned up. On the way home I had to stop for gas. I had filled up early Saturday morning, but have been on the go so much that I’d burned through a tank in three days.

Was in bed by 11 pm – later than I’d hoped. I’m still tired this morning. While I slept Winnie chewed up one of my shoes.

From Uni Watch: Atlanta has won each World Series game in which it wore a uniform for the first time, and has lost each game in which it wore a uni for the second time.

ME: Should’ve worn cream on Sunday. Hopefully they’ll wear grey tonight (they did, and...).

Didn’t see them all, but the following people I know were at Sunday night’s World Series game: Tripp Mullen, Amy Green, Thomas & Holly Gilbert, Tim & Melissa Turner, Michael M, Sally Grubbs, and Lang. People at The Battery included Bobby Myers, Joel Norman, Anna, Caleb, and Allen & Marie Black. I think Allen and Marie just went to The Battery after church to take pictures to post on social media, then went out to lunch.

MIKE SCHMIDT  [SABR Bio] has won the same number of Gold Gloves at third base as has Johnny Bench at catcher and Roberto Alomar at second base. Each has 10 GG (as do Ichiro Suzuki, Andruw Jones & Ken Griffey). Schmidt won more National League home run titles than any other player – ten times. He set a record for the most Hall of Fame votes in his first year of eligibility, with 444 votes in his only year on the ballot.

Current ESPN Total QB Rating. Stetson still doesn’t qualify for the national rankings, though if he did he would place fourth – ahead of Heisman candidates Pickett and Corral.

Denison: the philosopher Martin Buber distinguished between “I-You” and “I-It” relationships. The former should characterize the way we relate to people; the latter should describe our relationship with inanimate things. Unfortunately we often confuse the two, using people as objects in our quest to accumulate things. The night Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples and abandoned by the others, he first washed their feet (John 13). Now hear his command: “You also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:15). If the Son of God could wash their feet, whose feet can we not wash? How will you treat the people who serve you at a restaurant or other business today? How will you treat employees or strangers? Will you say about people what you would not say to them (Matthew 18:15)? Will you say anonymously through social media what you would not say in person? How we treat those in need is how we are actually treating Jesus (Matthew 25:40).

The philosopher John Locke believed we are born as a “blank slate,” on which life writes its lessons. We are the product of what we learn and what we do with what we learn. The key is to be intentional with what we write on our “slate” and what we then do to use this information wisely. Just because you we born into an abusive family doesn’t mean you can’t rise up and not be abusive yourself.

Snapped up a pair of vintage Nike Speed Turfs, a valuable commodity in the sneaker world. These are the Miami Dolphins Dan Marino edition, though I couldn’t find a photo of Marino wearing them. I used to have a grey pair of the Raiders version but they were too small, so I gave them to Anna’s friend Christian. Saw an old photo of Doug Flutie from the Canadian Football League and noticed he was wearing the Speed Turfs.
