Finally back to work after a week away. Had almost zero down time in the past week. Burning the candle at both ends. Three more days of go go go before I can even start to catching up.
Last Thursday: worked half a day, then drove to SC. Left East Cobb at 245. Fought traffic around 285 and 20 east out of town. Stopped for gas in Covington, then at the Chick-fil-A in Lugoff. Arrived after dark. Now we stay with Ceil’s brother, so we’re hanging out with them all the time.
Friday: drove to Columbia for lunch with an old friend. Made a few stops on the way, so I didn’t get back until 3 pm. Supper at the renovated restaurant at the White Plains golf course. Just reopened. Me Ceil Rusty Kelly Katherine Joe Dic Dac Debbie Phil Teresa and Rickard. Saw Billy and his young daughters. The place Ceil used to play at when she was a kid. The new restaurant there just opened, and there was a decent crowd eating there. I had a good chicken sandwich and baked potato. Ceil had the salmon. Katherine’s steak sandwich looked good. Matthew arrived at 9 am.
Saturday: we all me up at Corinne’s for the procession to the funeral, at the nearby Macedonia church in Angelus. Jordan, Ben, Beau, Zane, Victoria, Kevin, Martha, Jackson, and others had joined us. Beau penned a nice tribute.
The people from Fork Creek had brought lunch to the house: chicken salad sandwiches, pimento cheese sandwiches, Subway sandwiches, brownies, and other goodies. We stayed there for several hours.
Zane, Ben, and Beau had left. M went to get our car, and later I went to get our luggage. Ceil and I didn’t leave until 330 and stopped in Augusta for a snack. Had to pick up Winnie down at Caleb’s, so it was after 9 pm before we got home. A long day. Completely missed the Georgia game.
Sunday: I should’ve gone to play an early round of golf but was tired from the long Saturday. After Sunday School I drove Ceil to Johns Creek to look for a special 2026 calendar at a cool Japanese bookstore. Lots of fun stuff. Then lunch at Superica in Alpharetta. Our waitress looked like a young Kate Beckinsale.
I’d wanted to leave for Augusta much earlier, but it just didn’t work out that way. Then traffic was jammed due to a major accident on I-20 with delayed my another hour plus. Missed out on the driving range and thrift stores. Made it to the hotel just in time to meet coworkers Jonathan, Adam, and Leo.
Walked to Mellow Mushroom for huge calzones. Back at the hotel I tried to log onto the internet, but was having problems with my computer. It was time for bed anyway.
Monday: had to leave out extra early to run an errand that I hadn’t had time to do previously. Made it to Aiken by 730 and met up with coworkers Brad Leo Jonathan Adam Todd Eric David and Alex. Rode in a cart with Leo (above).
We played in a foursome with Brad (above) and our Textron contract, Tyler (below) – who was the only good golfer of the bunch. Since I hadn’t been able to practice, I played extra bad.
Jonathan and Adam (below) played the last two holes with us.
After a quick post-round Chickfila box lunch in the clubhouse with my coworkers, we drove to the EZGo plant in west Augusta. Nikkar gave me and Leo an extended tour, pointing out the parts we produce on the frames on the production line. The past several times I’d been to the plant I was there taking physical inventory, with no time to tour the facilities. Probably the first tour in about 20 years.
Also learned my coworker Brent had played college basketball at Lander, in Greenwood SC – back in 2006-2010. He still plays in leagues around Augusta.
Then just enough time to hustle back to the hotel to get ready for the dinner, at Abel Brown Southern Kitchen & Oyster Bar. The place is similar to where Matthew works. Fifteen in attendance, including Tyler, Brad, Shane, Eric, Leo, Jonathan, and Adam.
My chicken portion was huge and delicious. Drank a Jack & Coke.
Also dessert: a blondie brownie with pecan ice cream. A wonderful meal. On the short drive back to the hotel I took Brad and Leo past Augusta National. Got home and fell fast asleep.
Left the hotel after 830 this morning. Our 930 meeting was cancelled so we all drove home. Stopped by Dunkin Donuts for a breakfast sandwich and Baskin Robbins ice cream. So tired of interstate traffic that I got off the highway in Covington and took nice scenic two lane back roads up through Rosebud to Centerville to Rockbridge to Mountain Park to Lilburn and Norcross to Peachtree Corners to Roswell. Had to look at a map just to see where I had gone.
