For years Ceil has collected Stanley Anderson pottery. He’s an old artist in the western North Carolina mountains. We’ve visited his studio twice. It started with plates and bowl, and later coffee cups, pitchers, serving bowls and platters. Expensive stuff that has taken years to collect. I’d get her a piece for her birthday and Christmas. An art studio in Buckhead carries the Anderson pottery, right there on Roswell Road where The Big Ketch is.
Ceil uses one of the pitchers to hold all her wooden spoons, right there by the stove. Last night we were serving our supper plates. I reached for a wooden spoon and a little green lizard popped out of the bowl, and ran across the potatoes and chicken, then behind the coffee maker. Ceil tried to catch the lizard. I was moving stuff off the countertops. I moved the expensive pitcher over to the kitchen table.
Winnie noticed the lizard scamper into the pantry. Ceil started digging in the pantry. I was moving stuff away, clearing the area. Winnie stared into the pantry, so we knew the lizard was trapped. We ate our supper, then went back to trying to catch the lizard. Ceil wrapped it in a towel and carried it outside. Success!
We came back inside and started cleaning up. That’s when I noticed a second lizard, sitting on top of the brown wooden spoons. The lizard’s skin changed from green to brown, to match the spoons. I knew if I tried to carry the $200.00 pitcher outside with the lizard on top, I would probably drop and break it. Ceil wrapped it in a towel and carried it outside, laying it down on the driveway. Winnie scampered out with us, looking for the lizard. I showed the lizard to Winnie, but let it get away. That was enough excitement for one evening.
We gave Winnie a toy dinosaur to use from practice catching lizards.
This weekend is our church’s “Serve Atlanta” project, with hundreds of members going out and preforming acts of service at various places. Tonight our Sunday School is serving dinner to international students at Kennesaw State University. Our friends David and Amy Cox serve there regularly. Ceil and I donated an old couch and other items to help house some of the students. So yesterday Ceil bought groceries to cook a big beef stew. Hope these internationals eat meat. She had to cook it all day long. I skipped the gym this morning and went in to work early, so I could get off early and take her.
After we finally plopped down on the couch last night to watch the Steelers @ Bengals game, Ceil mentioned that she learned that injured 49ers tight end George Kittle was expected to play Sunday night against the Falcons. How many wives give NFL injury reports?
On Halloween I check ID to make sure there ain’t no faraway trick-or-treaters are bussing in to crash our neighborhood.
