Last Friday I drove the hour and a half back to Columbia to eat lunch at California Dreaming, on the South Carolina campus in downtown. Back in the mid-1980's Ceil had done some design work on that restaurant located in the old Columbia railroad station. That was when Ceil was working for Buesse Whitworth's architectural firm.
Met up with David Cape, my old high school teammate. Second time I'd seen him in almost 50 years. We had a great time catching up. Real good burger and fries.
Cape had walked on to the South Carolina to be a long snapper. Before going into coaching he worked the 8 pm - 8 am shift as a bouncer at a bar in South Atlanta, and as a stage director for professional wrestling in Macon. He used to have to escort Wahoo McDaniel out of the bar.
Later Cape coached in Ohio with Rob Carpenter, the former fullback for the Oilers and Giants. Then he moved back to Tift County to coach with our old high school coaches. He learned from the FSU coaches, like Mickey Andrews. Cape went on to coach in Macon, Dublin, Ohio again, and Columbia.
Ceil spent the past two nights down at W&MC's to help with the kids.I am still worn out from my trip. Not sure why I am so tired. After work Tuesday I straightened up a bit, did some laundry, and raked leaves. Then I plopped on the couch and watched last week's Georgia / Kentucky game. Then I went to bed and slept until 6:45 am.
And a big breakfast yesterday but not much after that.
Essay by JFBC senior pastor Clay Smith, on why baseball is the most Christian of sports, plus why he became a Red Sox fan at a young age – and stuck with them. Nice to see him wearing a Braves cap from time to time.
Former Braves catcher David Ross says a return to Atlanta as team's next manager 'would be amazing'.
The fall issue of the Atlanta SABR association newsletter features an article by my friend Johnny Tallant.
Georgia Tech Inked A New 10 Year Deal with Under Armour. Whatever. Six times more than what adidas was paying, so there will be more money to sign players.
SAL BANDO [SABR Bio] hit ten home runs in Spring Training in "The Year of the Pitcher". In the team's first year as the Oakland A's, Bando helped the them to a winning record in 1968 for the first time since Bobby Shantz won the MVP in 1952. He ranks highest in WAR for any A's non-Hall of Famer. Bando's 52.1 WAR rating, places him just behind Eddie Collins, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Rickey Henderson & Eddie Plank. Sal was the A's captain when they won five straight division titles, from 1971-1975, winning the World series 1972-1974.
DENISON: Ari Perez is a professor at Quinnipiac University, where she teaches a class called "Taylor Swift: Cultural Mirrorball." She explains that Swift is so prolific because she genuinely likes what she does: "She enjoys keeping a strong, productive output so that putting music out makes her happy and fulfilled." According to author Mel Robbins, allowing people to live their lives while taking control of our own is the key to flourishing. She complimented Taylor Swift for modeling this philosophy: "Let Them be wrong about you. Let Me get back to doing what I was put on this earth to do."
