Jackets Remain Undefeated

Both the Tech and UGA games were good games to watch. Duke was favored to win, which delighted Coach Key. Nice tough wins for Tech and Georgia.

Early in the 4th quarter Tech QB King missed a wide open receiver. Would've been the go ahead TD with 13 minutes remaining. GT offense had only accounted for 3 points in the first 3 quarters. Duke had been threatening to score early, only to have their fumble at the goal line turn into a 95 yard TD return for Tech – a 14 point swing.

Miami fell from the ranks of the undefeated, at home. QB Carson Beck threw 4 interceptions and had a 5th interception called back. Most he ever had at UGA was three. Lots of squabbling and name calling between Beck and UGA right now.

Former UGA kicker Rodrigo Blankenship made an appearance on ESPN College GameDay, and booted a 33 yard field goal for $1 million for charity.

Tech wore gold helmets with the gold GT decal outlined in white. On TV they look like plain gold helmets. Other teams like New Mexico are wearing similar helmets with hard to see logos, so it's not just Tech. I like the gold facemasks better than navy masks. Blends in better.

Duke had good looking blue helmets, blue jerseys, and black pants. They just looked terrible worn together. Probably why they lost.

The referee in the TV booth actually disagreed with the call on the field, that the Tech receiver didn't make the TD catch, which had been "confirmed" by the review. Looked like a catch to me.

GT kicker Birr got shaken up on the second half kickoff, but rebounded to boot 2 field goals in the second half.

Two clutch scoring drives by Tech in the 4th quarter to take a 2 score lead with 5 minutes remaining. Several Duke miscues contributed to Tech's lead, including missing out on 2 field goals. Good day for the Tech defense to contain the high scoring Duke offense.

Then Haynes King put the game out of reach with two long runs, first converting on 3rd and 14, then running it in from 30 yards out – literally looking over to the sideline while running down the field to see if he should score or take a knee to run out the clock (below). Never seen that before. Tech goes to 7-0, winning 27-18.

Tech moved up the 7th in the polls, their highest ranking since 1990. Not sure how many top ten teams lost this weekend besides Miami and Ole Miss. Tech's first 7-0 start since Kim King was the QB in when, 1965? People are talking about Tech hosting a playoff game at Grant Field. Way too early for that. I just hope they beat Syracuse. The Orangemen beat Clemson 34-21. Tech only beat the Tigers 24-21.

Vanderbilt answered every LSU score, to beat the Bayou Bengals in Nashville. Diego Pavia's Heisman moment? Not sure anyone else is having a Heisman-worthy season. I think King is just too much of a longshot, but I've been wrong before. To win, King will have to beat UGA. The Ohio State QB is having a good season. You know how Heisman voters love the Buckeyes, especially since their other darling Penn State is having a down year.

UGA with a rare first quarter lead, but Ole Miss responded with an impressive TD drive. Georgia's second leading receiver got knocked out of the game early, with an ankle injury. Then UGA drove down the field, only to be thrown for a loss on a botched halfback pass. Only 3 long possessions in the first quarter. Dawgs score on the first play of the second quarter on a Stockton to TE Oscar Delp. 10-7 Dawgs.

UGA TE Luckie (#7 above) caught three TD passes form Gunner, who was a perfect 12-12 in the second half. Stockton moved up to second in the nation in Total QB Rating, the highest its been all year. Dawgs can run the table and Gunner still won't get many Heisman votes.

I watched the Dawgs on our regular TV. Ceil's was in the living room watching Clemson on the other TV.

During the UGA Ole Miss game I spent more time on my feet, folding laundry and doing other things. Kirby and Kiffen have a healthy respect for each other. Wonder if Lane will be the next head coach at Alabama.

The Tigers longtime starting QB missed the game. Backup QB Brezina had a good game.

Later I watched a little Vols@Bama and Texas@Kentucky. The Wildcats pressured Arch all night. Planty of issues are plaguing the Longhorns. In overtime Kentucky went for the TD on 4th & goal, and the Horns held – so all Texas needed was a field goal to secure the road win.

BILLY SUNDAY [SABR Bio] delivered the eulogy at Addie Joss's funeral, on 17-Apr-1911. Sunday had played in the NL and had never faced Joss. How well they knew each other is tough to verify. The resulting encomium was corny mélange of mixed baseball metaphors with little about Joss personally. Sunday totaled a record 84 stolen bases in his final season in the majors, was split between teams in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The definition of a stolen base was not the same in 1890 as it is today. Cap Anson had seen Sunday in an Iowa fireman's tournament in Anson's hometown of Marshalltown, Iowa, where young Sunday had found work.

Denison on this weekend's "No Kings" protests. Not everyone was watching college football.
