We watched a good episode of Eli’s Places about the late coach Mike Leach. Quite the individual. Ceil was transfixed. Eli met former Kentucky head coach Hal Mumme in Key West, one of Leach’s favorite places. Joined by former Texas Tech QB Cliff Kingsbury, who later coached Patrick Mahomes.

Man Halloween candy sure is expensive. Used to buy regular sized Snickers bars on sale at Kroger for 25 cents, and the neighbors loved me. Then Dollar Tree had ten “fun size” candy bars for a buck. Now those same packs only have five bars for $1.25, and they’re smaller. So the price has more than doubled. I just spent $22.67 at “Dollar Tree” for 17 items. Not sure what the Halloween candy deal is. Someone says the Rice Krispy Treats at Costco are a good deal. I like to give out chocolate. Ceil likes to give out sugary candies. Not my favorite. I’ll eat the chocolate leftovers!
Ceil always liked to see the kids in their costumes, but that’s about it. This year she’s saying how she so hates the scary Halloween decorations. She used to carve jack-o-lanterns. All those skeletons and devils are a bit over the top. There’s one house we pass on the way to church that leaves their 20 foot skeleton up in their front yard year around. On July 4th they add an American flag draped around its shoulders. Seems like people decorate for Halloween more than they do for Christmas.
I am reading another Steve Berry novel, featuring his recurring character Cotton Malone – The Medici Return. Malone deals with a corrupt Vatican. I think I am about Cotton Maloned out. Finished Other People’s Houses.
RANDY JOHNSON [SABR Bio] was the first pitcher to strike out 300 batters in both leagues. In 1993 Johnson had 308 K for Seattle. Pitching for Arizona, Johnson exceeded 300 Ks four years in a row: 1999-2002. Pitching for the Yankees, he once surrendered four home runs in one inning, on 21-Aug-2005. White Sox batters Tadahito Iguchi, Aaron Rowand, Paul Konerko, and Chris Widger all homered with one out. Johnson finished the game and took the loss. Johnson is the Mariners franchise career pitching leader in ERA, shutouts, and strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Fun fact: while Johnson willingly autographs many objects, the only time he signs jerseys is when they are auctioned off for charity. That was the value is particularly high.
Denison: according to Dr. Lisa Miller, a psychologist at Princeton, there is compelling evidence that people who seek after God are 80% less prone to struggle with addiction, 80% less likely to engage in destructive behavior, and 60% more likely to lead fulfilling lives. Scientific studies explain why: there is a neurological link between prayer and the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter essential for regulating mood, emotional balance, and overall mental health. In How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings from a Leading Neuroscientist, Andrew Newberg and Mark Robert Waldman show how praying 12 a day improves cognitive skills, prevents cognitive decline, and builds neural circuits of compassion for others.
