Stockyard: the Return

Tuesday: worked from before 8 am past 6 pm. Still plenty to do. Ceil was at her women’s ministry so I ate at a place she dislikes: Stockyard Burgers & Bones in The Avenue East Cobb, not far from the house. Ate at the bar, with the Yankees/Rays on the TV.  Had the chicken tenders, slaw, and sweet potato tater tots rolled in cinnamon. The “tots” were good but sweet. Chicken was good but oily. Slaw wasn’t great. BBQ sauce was good. I passed on the BBQ sandwich because the last time it had made me sick. Perhaps the burger is the best bet at Stockyard. They did have a few appetizers than might’ve made an okay meal.

Interesting dynamic, eating at the bar. A couple came and sat at the bar, talking as much to the waitress as each other. A guy sat near them waiting on a pickup order, and they talked to him as well.  There were a decent amount of diners for a Tuesday night.

The restaurants in East Cobb are really spread out, which I suppose is a good thing. Mixed in on the main roads between the living spaces. Just a little too far to walk to a restaurant, and too hilly to bike. But other locales aren’t far: little Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Cumberland, Woodstock, even Buckhead and Westside. We rarely go to Marietta or Town Center. East Cobb has (in no particular order): Chili’s, Fresh to Go, a couple of pizza places, Mazzy’s, Chipotle, Seed, a Marlowe’s, several Mexican restaurants , Chicago’s, Moxie Burger, WZ Tavern, Tin Lizzy’s, a couple of BBQ joints, O’Charleys, Longhorn. Several good new places at a new shopping center near the corner of Shallowford and Sandy Plains, plus other small independent eateries like Moxie. California Pizza Kitchen closed. Several Moe’s closed as well.

Got home before Ceil. Watched a couple of Seinfeld episodes, including the Donna Chang episode. Also the episode where Mr. Pitt starts the trend of eating his candy bar with a knife and fork. George: “How do you eat a candy bar – with your hands? I noticed how much bigger candy bars were back then, 25-30 years ago.

Since many Braves games aren’t on my TV, I reply on Twitter for up to the minute game updates and highlights. Also good for news, other sports, a little politics, and some Christian stuff. I follow some accounts that post old sports photos. You’d like one guy who posts a daily photo of Casey Stengel.

I love aerial  photos, and can stare at them forever. My mechanic has an aerial photo of his old shop in Roswell that is cool. I have a photo of Grant Field from like 1979. I was at that game against Tennessee. There’s an old aerial photo somewhere around our office building, of the land around here. There was almost nothing between Peachtree Industrial and I-85, several miles away. This was back in the 70’s. Actually our plant was built before Ptree Industrial was built. People had to come in the back, from Old Peachtree and Buford Highway.

Used to have a pen that had a little cruise ship that moved up and down inside then pen. I loved that pen and carried it with me for a long time. Called it the Love Pen, after the Love Boat.

TIM WAKEFIELD  [SABR Bio] former first baseman holds the Florida Tech single-season home run and RBI records. His 22 HR & 71 RBI in 1987 are two reasons why he was inducted into the Sunshine State Conference HOF as a 1B on 25-Feb-1998. He trails only Roger Clemens for career strikeouts while pitching for the Boston Red Sox. Wakefield stuck out 2,046 batters pitching for BOS. 2,590 of Clemens’ career 4,672 Ks came w/BOS. Two years after Wakefield led the league in losses, he became the first post-expansion pitcher with fifteen saves the same season he had fifteen starts. In 1997, he tied for the AL lead in losses with 15. In 1999 he started 17 games but added 15 saves. He was once taken out of commission by a car. Hit while jogging near his home during the 1995-96 off-season. He recovered well and had a strong season in 1996.
