Missed By a Foot.

LSU upset Florida, despite the Gators dominating the game statistically. We got back from our dinner and turned on the TV. When we had left we'd been watching Tenn@Vandy, so that game came on where we'd left it, so see if that girl would be kicking. I knew LSU@Florida was on. First I heard about the play was when I checked Twitter.

Florida had a chance to tie, but the Gator's kicker (literally the best kicker in college football) just missed a makeable field goal on the last play of the game. Missed it by a foot. So the Gators national championship hopes went down the drain with that shoe throw.

Wild that Florida lost because of such a poor decision by that player. He will never do that again, though it probably won't stop any other kid from doing something like that. Gators head coach Dan Mullen tried to dismiss questions about the incident. Mullen was in a no-win situation. No matter what Mullen said or did, the media would be on his case. Mullen is probably the second-best head coach in the SEC behind Saban.

Back around Thanksgiving an all-star football player and wrestler charged out on the field and body slammed the referee, and now faces assault charges with the police. A few years ago there was another shoe-throwing incident in a SEC game, by a Tennessee Volunteer, I think. The world we live in these days.

Years ago the worst thing that happened was when Alabama's Tommy Lewis came off the sidelines to tackle the opponent running for a touchdown in the 1954 Cotton Bowl. More on Lewis: he was the captain of Alabama's team that year. He player he tackled, Rice's All-America halfback Dicky Moegle, was running free after eluding future Green Bay Packer QB Bart Starr. Two days later Lewis and Moegle appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. Lewis' full name was Thomas Edison Lewis. I suppose no relation to former SPdL members Tom Lewis Sr and Jr., who both played QB at UGA. Senior played with Fran Tarkenton in the late 1950's, and Junior was a backup in the early 1980's.

Hadn't heard that Woody Hayes tripped a player. Sounds like him. Ceil was at the Gator Bowl when he slugged the Clemson linebacker. Reminds me of the 1979 Saturday Night Live skit when John Belushi played an elderly Woody Hayes in a nursing home, playing checkers with his wife. SNL reporter Bill Murray was interviewing Woody about how Hayes had calmed down in retirement. When his wife jumped his checker, Belushi slugged her.

A couple of years ago Baltimore Raven Jacoby Jones was running a kickoff back for a touchdown against the Steelers, and Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin was "accidently" in his way. Tomlin was fined $100.000.00 for his miscue.

Friday night Ceil cooked beef stew. She was watching a Hallmark Channel movie: Christmas with Holly. We stayed up past midnight. Whenever I watch a Hallmark Channel movie I often google the actors to see what they've been in. Martin Mull was in one of the movies this weekend.

Saturday morning stayed in bed reading, then straightened a little before showering. Ceil cooked an eggy boy and grits. Saw the end of ESPN College Gameday with Condoleezza Rice as guest picker, then GA@Mizzou. Did laundry. Both Saturday and Sunday I did a good job unsubscribing to many of the junk emails I get. Hopefully that will unclutter my in box. After the Georgia game I went outside to rake leaves. Finished in the misty rain.

Saturday night we had dinner over at Preston & Cindy Cho's house. Their 12 year old daughter just started Marist this year. Preston has been working from home. His son, a junior at NYU, has been home taking classes on line. They all tested positive for covid a few months ago. As usual the meal was tremendous. Cindy had cooked the beef for five hours. So tender and tasty. The Korean potatoes were good too. Also fresh string beans in an oyster sauce, and a spicy green pepper in tomato sauce over rice. Reid and Noelle brought a chocolate chip cookie cake and ice cream. After dinner we went downstairs and us three guys shot pool. Hadn't done that in almost 40 years. You could tell.

Sunday: Online Sunday School. I'm hearing the services at Johnson Ferry are all booked out. Lots of spacing and mask wearing until you get to your seat. The services in the gym all filled, so extra people sit in the sanctuary. Saturday night JFBC had an outdoor Christmas event with horse-drawn carriage rides and outdoor showing of A Charlie Brown Christmas.

We learned a Sunday School classmate had tested positive for covid. She had attended our outdoor class on December 6, though I hadn't gone near her. She might've sat near Ceil, not sure. They had arrived late, and her husband had come and sat next to me (six feet away). He wore a mask the whole time.

Ceil fixed grits again for breakfast, We just sort of grazed the rest of the day: pumpkin bread, popcorn, English muffin, leftover stew, cookies from Henri's Bakery. Watched some of the Falcons@Chargers but not much. Later the Hallmark Channel: A Merry Christmas Match.

GIANCARLO STANTON [B-R Bio] a Notre Dame graduate, he won the MVP the year he had two thirds of the Triple Crown. Attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball.  Was named NL MVP in 2017 when his 59 HR and 132 RBI led the majors. Although he didn't receive even a single vote for Rookie of the Year, in his second year he received MVP votes and was an All-Star in his third year in the majors. Rookie in 2010 (Buster Posey was the NL ROY in 2010); Was tied for 23rd in MVP voting in his sophomore campaign and was an AS in 2012. One season he racked up 377 total bases and did so with nary a triple. In 2017 he had 168 H of which 32 were 2B and 59 were HR, but none were 3B.
