Joe Suggs Memorial Service

Joe Suggs memorial service: Dock was in town to officiate. He had been friends with Joe and Steve at Mercer. They had worked together at Sepco, Jim Suggs’ company (as had I).

Steve told several stories about Joe, from boyhood on into adulthood. My favorite: Joe had a great memory and quick wit. When in California, Joe had a girlfriend that could never get in the last word. Then she learned that the original meaning of Suggs meant “tender of pigs”. She waited until the right moment to spring this tidbit – at a dinner party. Joe didn’t miss a beat, putting his arm around her and quipping “Yes, it’s true – even to this day”.

Joe had worked on Space Jam and several other movies. He enrolled at Cal Arts with hopes that after graduating he could land a job at Disney. They saw his work as a sophomore and hired him on the spot. While others used guidelines to draw characters, Joe could draw them perfectly from memory. He later worked at Pixar. Later he wanted to return to Disney but feared his carpal tunnel would keep him from passing the entrance test. He took the test left-handed – and passed. Joe has his own IMDb page.

Joe was at Atlanta Stadium when Bob Horner hit four home runs in one game – the only time in history this happened in a loss. He remained a Braves and Dawgs fan throughout his life. All Joe’s nieces and nephews loved Joe.

Several old SPdL people in attendance in addition to Rob & Gayle: I sat with Drew & Mancy Kelly. Barbara Brown. Angela Turner. Jane Warren asked if I had become a minister, Lynn Lemmons and her mother. Lynn just recently beat cancer. Ginny Green, Wesley Neal lives in DC. His youngest is 15. Mark Crumpler and wife Marnie Mullen Crumpler, in town from Bethlehem PA. Lee Atchison. Logan Kirksey in town from Panama City. Melissa Hagman. David Wiley looked great. They moved to Watkinsville. Ashely and Diane Corbitt were there, but I missed speaking to them. Kristen Stuart updated me on her life, and that of brother Doug. I had a nice chat with Mary Ann Hall. Jimmy Light. Betsy Anderson.

Rob’s son just started working for George at Taqueria this past week. Be on the lookout for him. Rob hopes to compile a book of stories about Joe, which may include my telling of when as teenagers Joe and Lynn met Jay Leno in an arcade in Sandy Springs.
