Watched a good episode of Peyton’s Places on ESPN+ about Elvis being a big football Fan. Also an episode of The Eli Manning show on YouTube with guests Cooper and Tracy Morgan. Morgan said he had always believed in God, but was extra thankful for seeing him through after a tractor trailer plowed over his car. Just brought up God without being asked.

Not much to report. Waited until gas prices went up to fill my tank. Drove straight to my friend Lee’s house after work yesterday, so it was well after 8:30 when I got home.

This morning I caved in and stopped by Wendys for the first time all year. I’ll be extra good the rest of the day. After work I’m driving another guy up 400 to Hot Stove, so there won’t be any of my regular stops along the way.

MC drove Shivonne home from NC yesterday. Will drove home from Roanoke today in his new Mazda 3 hatchback. Ceil has been driving their huge old Toyota Sequoia around all week. The Sequoia has like 400,000 and is ready to retire.

MICKEY LOLICH  [SABR Bio] is the only American League non-knuckleballer to pitch more than 350 innings in a season in the playoff era. Since 1969, only Lolich passed 350 when he was on the mound for 376 innings in the 1971 campaign. Knuckleballer Wilbur Wood did it in each of the subsequent 2 seasons. Among lefties, only CC Sabathia struck out more American League batters in his career. Sabathia finished w/2,965 career AL Ks. Lolich’s total is 2,679, ahead of Randy Johnson’s 2,545. Lolich struck out his cousin three times in major league games. Ron Lolich, playing for CLE went 2 for 6 including a double in the games of 05-Jul- & 31-Aug-1973.

Miracle at Augusta

Just finished James Patterson’s “Miracle at Augusta”. Very good. As were his two other Travis McKinley books: Miracle on the 17th Green and Miracle at St. Andrews. Travis is a middle-aged worker bee laid off from his job, who earned a spot on the Senior Tour.

Monday: grabbed a Chickfila-type sandwich from McDonalds on the way to small group. Had all six group members there: John, Rob, Reid, Jamie, and Ron. Acts 17.

My new glasses are okay. Still trying to get used to them. I don’t have to have my face up so close to the screen. Still hard to find the mouse arrow thing.

Had a coworker comment on my weight loss, someone I don’t see every day. Now I just can’t go crazy with the eating this weekend. Friday at work we’re having a pot luck in honor of the Super Bowl. Trying to figure out where to take C for Valentines. Going to a Super Bowl party at my other friend Reid’s house. Like everyone else, I’ll be there for the food and fellowship, with the game on in the background.

Meeting my friend Lee for supper tonight, while C is at her ministry. Hot Stove up in Cumming tomorrow night.

ALBERT BELLE  [SABR Bio] was the first major leaguer to earn $10,000,000 in a season. CHW paid Belle $10m in 1997. He is the only player in major league history to bang out fifty home runs and fifty doubles in the same season. In 1995, playing for CLE, Belle hit 50 HR and 52 2B, which goes a long way to explaining his compensation bump two years later.

Not the Only Pebble on the Beach

Watched the Pebble Beach pro/am this weekend. Seems like that tournament has lost most of it’s luster. Speith and Cantlay were there, but most of the other top golfers were playing in Dubai: Dustin, Rory, Michelson, etc. Fewer A-list celebrities in the pro-am. I guess some stars are getting too old, and the younger actors aren’t playing golf. At least Bill Murray was there, knocking in backwards putts - much to Mark Calcaveccia's dismay. More money for golfers overseas this weekend, just for showing up.  Right now it’s Pebble Beach. Soon they’ll claim Masters weekend.

Despite aching feet, Bill Murray still stole the show on Saturday, signing autographs and bantering with this patrons. He even helped the CBS on course reporter in leading cheers.

Friday evening I drove C down to IKEA. Afterwards we ate at the Westside Taqueria. C got the black bean tostada special. Me the brisket enchilada in lemon cream sauce.

Housework on Saturday, and laundry. Watched Pebble Beach. Cleaned and straightened all day long, getting ready to hot Anna and Caleb for supper. M worked all day, then came home and helped C in the kitchen. He baked an apple crisp. I zipped to Kroger for sugar and ice cream. M would’ve eaten with us, but was meeting a friend for dinner and a movie later. So he sat with us during the meal, getting anything someone might’ve needed. Then as we were finishing the meal he dished out our desserts. Good service.

Anna was dog-sitting W&MC’s pet Okie, so A brought Okie over to visit with Winnie. I was worn out from being on the go all day, though I did sneak in a quick nap while C was at the grocery. Slept well on Saturday night.

Sunday School and worship. JFBC pastor Clay Smith said the building renovation (atrium, offices, library/bookstore, and coffee/dining area) would be completed without a fundraising campaign, and be completed by Labor Day. Leftovers for lunch. Did more cleanup and straightening in the living room.

Pancakes for supper. Watched Heartland and Young Sheldon. Crazy Monday morning already.

TIM LINCECUM  [B-R Bio] as a MLB rookie, when challenged by his new teammates that he might not be strong enough to be a proper major leaguer, promptly did a handstand and walked on his hands from the pitcher’s mound to the center field fence. The story appeared in Sport Illustrated. He was drafted by the Cubs in the 48th round, even though he had been the Player of the Year in his state. Drafted in the MLB June Amateur Draft in 2003 (1,408th overall). Played for his hometown University of Washington. Decided to attend college instead, and won the Golden Spikes Award as best amateur baseball player in the United States. Was then drafted in the first round in 2006 by SFG. Future battery mate Buster Posey won the GSA two years later, in 2008. GSA winners Will Clark, Pat Burrell, and Kris Bryant have also played for SFG.

I need to watch Into The Woods before April. I wrote myself a note to look up Into The Woods on my TV. If not Netflix it may be on Hulu or Amazon or Apple TV. I had read Stephen King’s novel 11-22-63 about a guy traveling back in time to stop the Kennedy assassination, two things I like . Then Hulu made it into a movie starring James Franco. That’s why I originally signed up for Hulu TV.  Not as good as the book.

YouTube TV. Lots of old clips you can watch from the old days. I like old Johnny Carson clips. Just search YouTube Carson and some celebrity you want to see, or Carnac, etc. Lang likes to watch YouTube clips of Jimmy Fallon. Hilarious.

BARTOLO COLON  [B-R Bio] was the first pitcher this century to earn ten wins for a team in each league during the same season. Posted 10-4 records for each of MON & CLE in 2002. Colon was the first Angels pitcher to earn twenty wins in a season since Nolan Ryan. Bartolo’s record for LAA was 21-8 in 2005. Ryan’s 1974 season was 22-16 for CAL. Colon enjoyed thirteen seasons of ten wins or more, just not in a row like Greg Maddux’s 18-year streak of 14+ wins every season (& 15+ wins in 17 straight seasons). Colon had 10+ wins from 1998-2005 and 2012-16. 

Puma Clyde Hardwood. Usually I like the logo on both sides of the shoes, and these only have them on the outside. But they still look sweet. 

Two celebrity judges walked off the stage when The Masked Singer was revealed to be Rudy Guiliani. I guess now people can’t stand to be in the same room as someone they disagree with. Perhaps they were upset they’d made complimentary remarks about someone they didn’t like. Just one more reason why Hollywood is not worth any time or attention.

The University of Nebraska altered their logo to omit hand gesture adopted by white nationalists.

Justice Without Forgiveness Is...?

Former Fellowship Bible Church pastor Crawford Lorritts about the civil rights museum In Montgomery, where the theme is justice – a word being thrown around alot these days. Crawford reminded Clay: “Many want justice - but justice without forgiveness is revenge.” And not that fake forgiveness we’ve spoken about in the past.

JFBC goal to equip 1000 disciple makers over the next 5 years

A disciple follows Jesus, is being changed by his Spirit, and committed to the mission of God. A disciple is a student, a follower, doing what the leader does, a learner. Jesus in Matt 9:12 it is the sick who need a doctor.

1. Jesus called his disciples
2. He expected a lifetime commitment
3. Jesus called outsiders, He cast a wide net
4. Jesus exposed His followers to danger
5. Jesus rewarded His followers.

Do we really believe that Jesus is the true source of truth? Our tendency is to like the learning more than the following. A spiritual bobblehead. The head moves but not the feet.

A disciple is being changed by the spirit. The disciples remained in Jesus’ presence. You are either being changed for the better, or changed for the worse. We serve God in the present.

Bonhoefer: we like the idea of God more than actually relating and following God.

How does the Spirit change is?
1. He guides us
2. He convicts us of sin, leads us to repentance
3. He reveals the meaning of scripture.
4. He produces the fruit of the spirit to bring us closer to God, and to keep us safe from sin. Love joy peace patience  … Helps us to follow God easily and routinely. Committed to following God - and sharing Christ with others. Players who won multiple batting titles, but hit below .300 for their careers.

Salad Days

 Jan Klempnauer posted a photo of the 1983 Camp SPdL counselors. Don Head, Leah Knight, Mark Stephens, John Condra, Wayne Smith, Steve Norman, Sarah and Brooks Maddux, Harold Hall, Jane and Tom Weaver, Dolly Craig, Charles Baugh, and Howard Eaton. Maybe Bonnie Shoemaker and Tracy Taylor, and a summer intern. Not sure, but that may have been the year David Hurt had been laid up after his wreck. Those were the salad days.

Just so happened that minutes before the above picture was taken, Kelly Curran and I took the first of several silly photos, a practice that would continue over the next ten years. Ten years later Kelly would visit baby Will and sneak a UGA onesey on him during a too-long diaper change.

Most mornings around the time I am backing out of driveway God usually puts one song or another in my heart and mind. This morning it happened to be “Do Re Me” from Sound of Music, but usually it is a hymn or anthem. Yesterday it was the Chapel Choir anthem with the refrain:

“It’s too glorious to wonderful to know

That you will always be in my heart where ever I go.

In the morning wind and on the raging sea…

You are always watching, loving, guiding me…”

It starts off “Oh Lord you know me, you know my ways…”

But it’s one of those anthems with sheet music that directs you back to the beginning.

If you’re not careful you will sing “You knew my well when I was…”

(and incorrectly turn the page and sing) “…DAY!”

Don Head and I always used to get a big laugh out of that.

Thursday: worked past six again. Got a big project done. Another today. Was after seven before I got home. C had been with Shivonne all day. Winnie went along, and enjoyed looking out the front window at the scene on the street. Last night Winnie was exhausted from playing with Okie all day. Black beans and rice for supper.

MIKE CUELLAR  [SABR Bio] was the first pitcher born outside the United States to win a Cy Young Award. Born in Las Villas or Santa Clara*, Cuba; CYA in 1969 tied w/Denny McLain. Cuellar was the first pitcher to hit a home run in League Championship Series play, in G 1 ALCS 1970. His first Topps card misspelled his name: 1959 Topps card #518 spelled his name “Cueller”.

Who's Spiderman Now?

Everyone talks about how great it was when Bo Jackson ran up on the leftfield wall after making a catch. He didn’t really need to do it, he just did. Few talk about Andruw Jones’ Spiderman catch, when he jumped up, planted his feet on the deepest wall in centerfield, and made an over the shoulder catch in midair – then kept his balance to make the throw in to hold the baserunners.

Plus Jones struck out at a rate over 50% fewer than Bo (20% to 32%). They homered at the same rate. If Andruw can’t make the Hall of Fame, neither could Bo.

This morning I looked outside and thought how glad I was to not have to go out at lunch. Then of course the day started out rough. So much going on that it’s hard to think about – and take action on – everything that needs to be done. Like spinning plates, you give the attention to whatever plates is wobbling the most right now. Well this morning I thought of several things that needed immediate attention, so we will be covered in April and May. No cooperation from other departments. Looks like its gonna take all day. Then another big project for tomorrow.

Then my boss took me to Duluth Diner for lunch. The place with everything on the menu: breakfast, burgers, Philly cheese, patty melts, chicken parms, French dips, huge desserts. I got a cobb salad with grilled chicken. Good.

Worked past six last night. Ceil had been running errands all afternoon, down to Brookhaven. C cooked Mexican chicken with onions and rice. Corn. I pulled a Reid and piled everything on top of a salad, skipping the soft taco shell.

FERNANDO VALENZUELA  [B-R Bio] set a rookie shutout record in his first full major league season. Threw eight in 1981 to lead the majors. In his first season, he surrendered zero earned runs in ten appearances. All his pitching assignments in 1980 were in relief, at total of 17-2/3 innings. He threw his first no-hitter on the same day that a former teammate threw his first no-hitter. On 29-Jun-1991 Valenzuela and Dave Stewart threw no-hitters, finishing within 20 minutes of each other. Each walked three that day. Neither ever pitched another one.

The WWII book I’m reading details Hitler’s hatred of the Jews, his desire for Germany and all of Europe to be “cleansed” of these people. The gunning down and gassing of hundreds and thousands of Jews every day. The mountains of shoes, suitcases, coats, eyeglasses, and human teeth left behind. Large bags filled with tons of human hair (made into pillows for the German elite). Roomfulls piled with hundreds of thousands of tiny baby shoes. Train after train crammed full of Jewish people, thinking they were headed to a work camp, only to be led directly off the train to gas chambers disguised as bathhouses – where as many as four thousand were killed every hour.

Six million Jews were murdered because of their race and religion – 6,000,000 souls. Made light of by a woman who took on a Jewish name to stand out from the crowd. Sharon Osbourn was fired from her TV gig for comments she made, that were far less offensive than any Holocaust remarks.

Redskins No More

So the Redskins new name is the Commanders, announced this morning. Atrocious new uniforms. Predictably all black and all white sets like the Falcons and Jaguars and Eagles and Cardinals and Panthers, and all team color burgundy like other teams wear head to toe team colors – Texans, Jets, Patriots, Rams, Seahawks, Vikings, Titans, blah blah blah. 

There are a few things to like. The helmets are okay. Facemasks blend in with the helmet. The W on the front of the black helmet is a look that should've been trotted out ages ago. Stripes on the jerseys are a plus. Patches on the black jerseys are a decent substitute for stripes. Not a fan of the huge team name on the front, but I like the lines above and below the names on the back of the black jersey. Hate the number font and lack of stripes on the pants.

The Commanders look more like college uniforms than NFL. Someone said that looked like the American Alliance uniforms, like the Atlanta Legends. They messed up the years they won championships, but that's an easy fix. Somewhere Sammy Baugh is turning over in his grave. Thumbs down.

The Bengals chose to wear their home black jerseys in the Super Bowl. The Rams chose a relatively classic look as well.

Was leaving home for work this morning and realized the temperature was in the 40’s for a change. I’d been thinking this year I would try to golf some weekday mornings, hopefully twice a month. It was a little later start than I would’ve liked, but I steered my car down to Candler Park. Arrived just before 8 am. Let a regular go off ahead of me, then poked along after him. The wind was blowing a little more than I’d expected, but I was plenty warm. Hit some good and more bad. But man I am having a hard time seeing where the ball is going. Still I only lost one ball, on a tricky shot where the chances of success weren’t high.

Made it to the office by ten. Things are so crazy that missing two hours of craziness really doesn’t mean much. I’m having to cut my material on five machines spread out around metro Atlanta – and four of them are broken. When one or two are broken I can work around that, but four broken machines is a killer.

Monday night on the way to small group I got the McDonalds Chickfila-style sandwich and Coke Zero for one dollar total. This morning I was down another pound. I really need to crush this diet thing. My pants are already starting to feel loose. Down 12 pounds since New Years. Still a long way to go.

M and C ate fish Monday night while I was at small group. C said she wasn’t crazy about how the fish turned out. She didn’t like Sunday night’s meatballs and rice dish either. I ate the leftovers on Tuesday.

Tuesday: got to my focus group and realized I’d left my wallet at work in my backpack. Made it back to the office but I’m lower on gas than I’d like. Got paid $35 to taste two small Halloween-sized Hersheys sugar free chocolate bars, each less than one inch square. Took less than ten minutes.

Shivonne and MC were hanging out at our house yesterday while their car is in the shop. I worked past six last night. M drove C to her ministry and took MC and Shiv home. I fixed myself a quesadilla. I’m eating less than I used to, or trying to anyway. Watched Jeopardy and that terrible new car show.

WHITEY FORD  [SABR Bio] is the only pitcher to give up multiple All-Star game home runs to the same batter. Willie Mays homered off Ford in the 4th inning of the 1956 ASG & leading off the 3rd inning in the second ASG of 1960. Ford had 1,200+ plate appearances in his 16 year career, during which he managed 175+ hits, nineteen doubles, and he scored ninety-one times. Never, however, did he hit a triple. He also had 69 RBI, but nary a triple. His record. No other pitcher was on the losing end of more World Series games, in 1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1962, 1963, 1963 & 1964. He also won 10 WS games.

The GOAT Retires

Today Tom Brady officially announced his retirement from professional football, after leading the Bucs deep in the playoffs, and leading the NFL in touchdown passes this year. He takes with him the NFL records for most TD passes and most passing yards, along with a slew of other records that will be hard to top – like most Super Bowl wins and appearances. These are facts that cannot be debated.

Like many words and phrases, the term GOAT get thrown around much too often. Greatest Of All Time. But in Brady’s case, the shoe fits. Every other quarterback’s accomplishments pale in comparison.

Some people don’t like Tom Brady. They made up their mind a long time ago and don’t plan on changing it. They might’ve read the initial deflategate stories but never bothered to learn what was in the final reports. Some of these same people love Michael Jordan but fail to recognize the similarities between the two. Both are committed to winning like no other two athletes I’ve ever seen. Perhaps add Larry Bird to that list, but his body broke down.

Not sure what else kept people hating Brady: his looks, his wife, his relative silence for most of his career until near the end. Or was it all the Super Bowls he won? His relative lack of athletic superiority?

There are some athletes I’m not fond of. That’s my right as a fan. Rubs me the wrong way. Call me an old geezer. I like MJ. Not LeBron. Jerry Rice and Randy Moss, not Antonio Brown or Terrell Owens or Michael Irvin. I like Herschel. I like Bo, but he was no Herschel. Not as fast. Even in college, injuries kept Bo from coming close to Herschel’s numbers.

No, Brady is not perfect. Hell, he cusses too much for me, but it’s not the unnecessary cussing you hear from some people. Has chased a few non-Christian rabbit holes. I don’t worship the dude. He’s just one of the greatest NFL players ever. His record stands for itself.

Not really fired up about the Super Bowl, but some of the trivia is always fun. Heard some on the sports talk radio. I’m too busy to really dig into all the storylines. I don’t know that many players: Matthew Stafford, Sony Michel. UGA DL for the Rams. LA has a good lineman – Aaron Donald? Their head coach went to St Pius in Atlanta. Edged Calvin Johnson for state player of the year their senior year. Bengals have Burrow. Their kicker set records at Florida and left college with a year of eligibility remaining. Was the only kicker drafted last year. From Ft. Payne Alabama.

When we used to go to the Super Bowl party at the Hurts, Dan Toholsky was more prolific than me about bringing up obscure facts about players and the game. You could tell he’d done his reading.

Super Bowl fun facts: the combined age of the two head coaches is the lowest ever – 74, I think. If the Rams win their coach will be the youngest in history. The Rams will use their regular home locker room for the Super Bowl. The Bengals will use the Chargers home locker room. Second straight year the NFC team will be playing the Super Bowl in their home stadium. Never happened before last year.

The team wearing the white jersey has won 14 of the last 17 Super Bowls. As the home team, the Bengals will choose from a number of various combinations. The Rams will also pick from several options. This is the first Super Bowl where both teams will be wearing helmets with animal imagery, as opposed to team logos. This an be an attractive Super Bowl uniform-wise, or it can get ugly.

The Friday before the Super Bowl we’ll bring in covered dishes to work. I’ll break out my number 9 Bengals jersey – not for Joe Burrow but for Carson Palmer. I sold off most of my jersey collection, but was never able to sell the on-field Bengals jersey. If we attend a Super Bowl party I will wear it then as well. Perhaps with my matching orange KD7 Nike sneakers.

MICKEY VERNON  [SABR Bio] participated in the most career double plays at first base, with 2,044 DPs. Only Chicago shortstop Luke Appling appeared in more pre-expansion games with nary a World Series game among them (2,422 to 2,409 for Vernon). Mickey got his only World Series ring just days after his final career game as a player. Vernon was the first base coach for the Pirates in 1960 after playing nine games for them. He had also coached for them during that year.
