Gridlock

Heavier gridlock downtown yesterday, but instead of giving needed traffic info, the DOT's multimillion dollar transportation system encouraged trapped travelers to buckle up and get vaccinated. Grrr.

After fighting traffic I stopped by four thrift stores. Found a sweet pair of nylon Puma LQDcell sneakers. Checked the size: 12. Sweet. Carried them around the store looking at other stuff. While waiting in line to check out I looked closer - they were size 12 UK, which translates to a 13 US. Too big. Since then I've tracked some down on Amazon, eBay, and other places.
Found this in my desk: Andy Stanley’s questions to ask when making a decision:

1. Why am I doing this – really?

2. If someone in my circumstances came to me and asked my advice, what would I tell them?

3. In light of my past experiences and future hopes and dreams, what is the wise thing to do?

Article: reading improves overall brain function. “Using MRI scans, researchers have confirmed that reading involves a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain. As your reading ability matures, those networks also get stronger and more sophisticated.”  Healthline reports. “Researchers used functional MRI scans to measure the effect of reading a novel on the brain. Participants read the novel “Pompeii” over a period of nine days. As tension built in the story, more and more areas of the brain lit up with activity. Brain scans showed that throughout the reading period and for days afterward, brain connectivity increased, especially in the somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that responds to physical sensations like movement and pain.”

Theory of mind (ToM) refers to a set of skills essential for building, navigating, and maintaining social relationships. A recent neurological study determined that routine reading sessions dramatically improve ToM.”

Bill Gates’ ways to benefit from reading sessions.

1. Make notes in the margins to make sure you’re understanding what you’re reading.

2. Finish every book you start to enforce discipline.

3. Read in whatever format that you’re most comfortable with.

4. Set aside one hour a day to read, to set a pattern.

DAVE DeBUSSCHERE  [SABR Bio] was the right-handed starting pitcher was protected by White Sox instead of Denny McLain, allowing McLain to be taken on waivers by the Tigers. On 08-Apr-1963, McClain was selected off waivers by DET from the CHW as first-year waiver pick. He had left his hometown of Detroit to play for the White Sox partly because of a $75,000 signing bonus. A $75K bonus was quite high for that era. 2   In his first season as a pro, he dominated the South Atlantic League with a 10-1 record, pitching complete games in 7 of his 15 starts. Pitching for 1962 Savannah/Lynchburg White Sox, he also impressed with an ERA of 2.49, striking out 93 in 94 innings. In his rookie season in the majors, he had teammates that included four future Hall of Fame players and a future Hall of Fame manager. On the 1962-63 CHW were Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, Early Wynn & Hoyt Wilhelm, managed by Al Lopez.

Denison: If Christians are not more like Christ than anyone else, why follow Christ? A biblical response: our faith never promised that Christians will be made perfect in this life. Paul admitted, “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Rom 7:19). Others will say people who claim to follow Jesus but sin in horrific ways are not true Christians. The Bible teaches, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). If Jesus was tempted, we will be tempted (Heb 4:15). If Peter could fail, we can fail (Gal 2:11–14). This truth leads to a third fact: Becoming a Christian does not remove our free will. We were created to love our Lord and our neighbor (Matt 22:37–39), but love requires a choice. God gives us freedom to choose, and honors our freedom. When Christians sin, the fault is not with Christ but with us. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to defeat temptation (1 Cor 10:13), but we must seek his help daily (Eph 5:18).
