Saturday

Saturday night movie. Dakota Johnson breaks the fourth wall in the most charming of ways. No one is more self-obsessed than her sister. Most delightful movie ever in the Jane Austen genre.

What until you hear about my Friday evening. Talk about getting stuck. Stay tuned. Got home late and made more brisket quesadillas.

DENISON: experts who gathered in Rome for a conference organized by the University of Notre Dame warned religious freedom is under attack all over the world. The more difficult the times, the more we are tempted to blame God - and the more we are tempted to double down on ourselves. Western society has taught us that to "know thyself" is the key to wisdom. Self-reliance is the path to personal success and significance, or so we're told.

Epicurus (341–270 BC) claimed, "Self-sufficiency is the greatest of all wealth." Ralph Waldo Emerson agreed: "The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be." So did Ayn Rand: "Man—every man—is an end in himself, not a means to the ends of others; he must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself."

Joseph Campbell: "You become mature when you become the authority of your own life." Steve Jobs advised, "Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become." See my article,
"'Nap boxes' and the providence of God."    As you consider the news I've reported today and the daily drumbeat of crises in the headlines, let me ask: How is self-reliance working for us?

Former Boston Celtic Enes Kanter changed his last name to Freedom, and wore sneakers protesting the cruelties China forces on its citizens and other countries. The owner of the Bucks confirmed the NBA has made the business decision to cave to China's demands. Near the end of the season Enes was traded to the Rockets, then cut. Now he is a free agent, and probably won't be picked up by another team. I don't agree with all the initiatives my company takes either. Below: seen in a thrift store:
