Indian Summer

School used to be out as you said all of June, July, and August. Now it seems to be out May, June, and July. I say it’s the teacher’s union. Seems like teachers want to be out in May so they can beat the vacation crowd. Not the same in all states though – some are normal. What is funny is that when kids go back to school in late July, at church I keep hearing “I can’t believe summer is over!” In August I’ve even seen people wearing flannel and other fall clothes. People are brainwashed so easily!  It is STILL summer, and will be until next Thursday.

Back in the day we practiced football in August. Now I’m sure practice starts in July, and games in August. Sad. Of course these days, like everything else, football training is more year around than in my time, when we lifted weights in the offseason.

Now it’s the Indian Summer. Wait, can you still call it that?

The Colts cut kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. This past Sunday Hot Rod missed a potential game-winning field goal, and shanked two kickoffs out of bounds. Some think he was made the scapegoat. Maybe the Colts will trade for Justin Reid.

Former Super Bowl winning Rams Greatest Show on Turf OC & Head Coach Mike Martz called out the poor QB play of Bears QB Justin Fields and 49ers QB Trey Lance. Lance was 13/28 with no TDs and an interception. For his candor Martz is being called a racist.

Before the season started you could buy a season ticket for the South Carolina Gamecocks football for $90.00. Worth it just for the UGA game. You’d also get Georgia State, Charlotte, South Carolina State, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Tennessee. The latest on Clemson’s QB controversy.

Braves: Jansen had a good inning. Matt Olson is struggling, but has a couple of weeks to get back on track. A day off probably might help. Rookie pheenom Vaughn Grissom may have hit the wall. He hasn’t gotten a hit in his last 16 hits. Perfect timing for the return of Ozzie Albies, who went 5-5 Wednesday night in Gwinnett, including a walk-off home run.

680’s Chris Dimino knows more about baseball than anyone I know. He says Michael Harris is a better outfielder than Ronald Acuna. Dimino wonders in 5 years who will be a better player: Harris or Acuna.

Tuesday night C spent the night with Shivonne while Will worked. After picking up takeout from Ruby Tuesday I tried to chill, but Winnie was being a pest. Watched Peyton and Eli’s shows on ESPN+. Guests included Joe Namath, Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer, and others.

Busy day on Wednesday. Haircut at lunch. Will brought Shivonne over and put her down for a nap. Then he went to work. I had lots of odds and ends going on for work.

Supper was grilled chicken, baked sweet potato and squash wedges, and steamed broccoli. Played with Shivonne before she went to bed. Okie and Winnie played.

Played nine holes of golf this morning. Had to call in to our 9 am meeting on the drive to the office.

GARRY MADDOX  [SABR Bio] hiis soft line drive was caught by Cal Ripken to end the last World Series the Orioles have been in. Final out 1983 WS, 16-Oct-1983. He was drafted by the team he had cheered for his whole life, but left baseball when he thought he wasn’t treated fairly. When he returned to the sport, he replaced his childhood hero. He grew up in Southern California but loved the Giants. When he couldn’t convince them to raise his signing bonus to equal those of other draftees, he joined the army. When he finally signed and made it to the big club he played centerfield, replacing Willie Mays, who had been traded to the Mets. Nickname, drawing somewhat on the fact that he was by then a veteran, was the “Secretary of Defense”.

Man sounds like I need to go to Houck’s and get those chicken fingers and onion rings.

Denison: The Justice Department announced charges against three Iranians alleged to have launched cyberattacks against the US and global critical infrastructure. They are still at large and believed to be in Iran. The State Department is offering a $10 million reward. The Treasury Department has announced sanctions against ten individuals and two groups affiliated with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, alleging they have carried out ransomware and other cyberattacks since at least 2020.

Saw a clip of Pat Jarvis giving up the go-ahead home run in the 1969 NLDS. The Little Bulldog. Known for losing his cap on his follow through. Elected sheriff of Dekalb County. Later had legal troubles of his own.
