The Braves won their 7th straight game last night, and are still tied for first place with the Mets, who are faded despite playing the weak part of their schedule. This time last week Braves fans were panicking after they lost three straight games while losing the Cardinals series 1-2, then winning the Rockies series 2-1. They are 63-24 since the beginning of June, and have erased a 10-1/2 game deficit.
Last night Acuna scored the go-ahead run, tagging up from third and scoring on a sacrifice fly into deep foul territory by Contrares. Here’s something they might discuss on sports talk radio: in that situation would it ever be better for Oakland to let the ball drop in foul territory, so the run doesn’t score? Batters are usually worse hitters down two strikes. There was a 90% chance Acuna would score on the play, but less than a 30% chance the batter would be able to knock him in on an ensuing pitch. But no team ever does not get that foul out given a chance.
With the Braves in Oakland, it’s a good time to see how the Olson for Pache trade is working out so far. I know its way to early to tell, with over seven years left on Olson’s contract. Langeliers was named to the AA all star team, then was called up when rosters expanded in September. Pache has yet to turn into the next Andruw Jones.

FERGIE JENKINS [SABR Bio] surrendered 211 home runs in the AL and 273 in the NL. He totaled more than 3,000 strikeouts but fewer than 1,000 bases-on-balls: 3192 Ks and 997 walks. Jenkins struck out all three Alou brothers. Felipe, Matty & Jesus also each homered off Jenkins.
Sometimes I will mutter to myself “something’s rotten in the state of Denmark” sounding like my old high school chemistry teacher Mr. Bentley, inventor of the legendary “Bentley Tentley” tent warming system. I took that class with my best friend Don Lott. The something’s rotten saying comes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Don and I made an 8 mm film about Hamlet for a high school English project, along with fellow musketeers Chuck Smith and Angus Howard. I’m hearing rumors of a high school reunion. We shall see.
Tuesday: left work at 5:30. Didn’t want to mess with 285 west and 75 north, so I took Spaulding over 400, across Roswell Road all the way to Johnson Ferry, then over Paper Mill to Lower Roswell to Delk to the Ruby Tuesday near I-75. A relaxing, winding drive through the trees with hardly any traffic. Cashed in my ticket for a free Ultimate Crispy Chicken Sandwich, loaded with bacon and cheese and fancy dressing. Got it to go.

In The Screwtape Letters, C. S. Lewis observed: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.” The creators of Little Demon are advancing and advocating for demonic realities on a truly dangerous level. The occult is horrifically popular today: the TikTok hashtag #WitchTok has 20.5 billion views, while psychic services is an industry worth $2.2 billion in the US. The Bible rejects astrology and horoscopes (Jer 10:2), mediums and fortune-tellers (Lev 19:31; Micah 5:12), seances (Deut 18:10–12), and worship of Satan in any form (Matt 4:10). The first step into the occult opens the door to all that lies behind it. If you would not allow cancer in your body, you must not allow spiritual cancer in your soul. Since “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19), anyone who does not belong to Christ ultimately belongs to “the god of this world” (2 Cor 4:4).
