The Braves are promoting their players for all star game votes with a coffee theme this year. Last night they were giving away free hot or cold coffee outside the ballpark in The Battery in special Braves all star cups. I try not to drink my diet Mtn Dew after lunch for the same reason. Then I ran out of the drink and hadn’t bothered to get more. But having been on the go so much lately I really “needed” the boost in the AM. So when I had to make the diaper run late Monday I picked up a 12 pack. Even then yesterday I forgot to grab a can on my way out the door.
Buccees. Like a convenience store the size of a Target. BBQ, beef jerky, a bakery, ice cream coffee, etc.
When W&MC came to pick up Shivonne after a week with us, I told MC about the Whitaker’s cousin camp, and told MC that this had been the first annual week long “Sissy Camp” where Shivonne would come over for a week. MC liked the idea.
My eyes have been particularly dry lately. I’m not good at putting in Visine or saline solution like C does.
Ceil and Anna left town late yesterday headed to SC. I leave Friday morning for SC. On Saturday M will meet up with Caleb and ride together, so on the way back A&C can ride together, M can drive back alone, and me and C can ride together. Sad that W&MC can’t go, but with a week old baby there’s no way they can travel. Knowing all along MC’s June 2 due date, it’s the reason why Anna’s wedding was planned for a date that wouldn’t conflict with the birth. Nothing W&MC could do about that.
Wednesday: left work at 5:30. Met my small group at Marlow’s Tavern for dinner. A good time. Ate the burger and fries. Very good, though toward the end the bun was starting to fall apart. Robert got the Cuban sandwich, which looked good.
Got home at 9 pm and worked on laundry. Watched part of a Tina Fey Jane Fonda Jason Bateman movie but didn’t like it, so I watched a Seinfeld special on Netflix, then Letterman interviewing Julia Louise Dreyfuss. Folded a bunch of clothes and took out the trash, and took out Winnie, so it was after midnight before I got to bed.
Skipped the gym this AM because I had to walk and feed Winnie. Also got a load out of the dryer. Customer visits the office this morning. Customer was here so we all went to the Medlock Tavern for lunch. I skipped the burger. Skipped chicken tenders and ate a Cuban sandwich and sweet potato waffle fries.
Tonight I watched “Air” on Amazon Prime, the movie about Nike courting Michael Jordan. Made and stars Ben Afflack and Matt Damon, with input from His Airness himself. Highly recommended.
So I sent L that one OutKast bobblehead, which is one of the nicest bobbles the Braves have given out – but not really my thing. L has been so generous to me over the years, hosting me in NYC and Memphis, tickets and sneakers and Grizz merch. So I expected nothing in return for the OutKast bobble. Then last night I got home to find a huge box had arrived via FedEx – with TWENTY Grizzlies bobbleheads! A limited edition anniversary set of great Grizzlies players, coaches, and two mascot bobbles. Ja Morant. Pau Gasol and his brother. Jason Williams. Shane Battier. Hubie Brown. Mike Miller. Plus a multi-tiered display stand. Super cool.
Hopefully next week will be more restful. Also tonight. Been on the go and haven’t gotten as much sleep as I would’ve liked.

OSCAR CHARLESTON is the only major leaguer to win three hitting Triple Crowns. Charleston paced the Negro National League in 1921 with 15 HR, 91 RBI, .433 BA in 77 games, and the Eastern Colored League in both 1924 (15, 63, .405 in 54 G) and 1925 (20, 97, .427 in 71 G). Among all other major league hitters, only Ted Williams, Rogers Hornsby and Josh Gibson had two Triple Crowns. Oscar’s defense was so good that a fellow Hall of Famer once noted, “He was Willie Mays before we knew who Willie Mays was." This observation was made by Buck O’Neil, who was inducted in 2022. Much of Charleston’s early career was spent as the Negro Leagues’ premier center fielder, but he was a gifted all-around athlete. Among the thirteen players depicted in Kansas City in the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’s Field of Legends display of life-size bronze statues, he is positioned farthest from home plate. Stationed in CF in this display, Charleston is joined by Satchel Paige (P), Josh Gibson (C), Buck Leonard (1B), Pop Lloyd (2B), Ray Dandridge (3B), Judy Johnson (SS), Cool Papa Bell (LF), Leon Day (RF), Martin Dihigo (batter), Bob Motley (umpire), Buck O’Neil (manager) and Rube Foster (owner/founder).
