The Best of Me

Watched a good movie on Netflix Saturday. Wasn't Ceil's favorite.

Freedom of the Press

Creative Loafing wrote an article about the buildings being torn down a couple of weeks ago, and the story was picked up by a Buckhead publication. One of Jack Worrill's daughters posted it on Facebook. The article mentioned that it was cheaper to tear down the buildings than bring them up to code - a fact not mentioned by the AJC.

Leave it to the evil AJC to stir up trouble. You think they would've published the article had SPdL been a Muslim or gay organization?

And why does SPdL have to provide cheaper housing in Buckhead than anyone else?

Chicken and fish tacos for Sunday supper, cooked by Ceil and Matthew. The girls are cooking breakfast again this morning. Ben is supposed to cook Low Country Boil tonight. That means the two of the next three nights we eat at Bonefish and Provisions in Holden Beach NC.

Sun, Fun, Food & Football

Wednesday night there wasn't much going on. Ceil and Teresa took the girls shopping at the newest shopping center then dinner at McAllisters Deli. M and I didn't want to wait so we drove thru Bojangles. I had the BBQ sandwich with slaw on top, which was pretty good. Came back to the condo and watched a little too much of the ESPYs.

Another long day out on the beach today. Ceil cooked a tomato pie but I had a chicken sandwich for lunch.

Tonight 14 of us drove the hour up to Holden Beach NC to eat at my sister-in-law's cousin's seafood restaurant, the Provision Company. We've eaten there the last three years and I've learned the burger isn't the greatest. Instead I got a very good grilled chicken sandwich topped with grilled peppers, onions, and cheese. The large onion rings were sweet and not greasy. I was light on the gas pedal and the CRV got 31.7 mpg on the trip.

EARLIER: Friday departure delayed when M won concert tickets, which I was able to sell.

Arrived in SC about 1145 pm. Saturday I snuck in a trip to McDonalds when gassing up. Usual lunch at Wendys on the way and Saturday pm PaPa Johns pizza. Ceil added two long shopping trips to the grocery, WalMart, and Publix.

Sunday the kids woke up early to fix the breakfast their late grandfather had made them all their lives. Phil and I were the first two out on the beach, as usual. Spent most of the day out there with a sandwich and cheesecake lunch break.

In honor of the SEC Media Days this week, here's a football story from Reid:

I was reading in the paper this morning about Kenny Stabler dying of cancer. It made me think of Alabama football. Thinking of Alabama football made me think of a game that Edith and I attended years ago between Alabama and Mississippi. For years I have thought that the Alabama quarterback in the game was Kenny Stabler. Upon further review, I discovered today that the Alabama quarterback was Scott Hunter. But its a good story anyway.

In 1969, Edith and I were at a point in our lives where we would go to most any game, whoever, whenever, and wherever. So, when Edith's dad invited us to go to a football game in Birmingham between Alabama and Mississippi, I thought I was just going to another game. Turned out to be called by many as the greatest game ever in the Southeastern Conference.

The site was Legion Field in Birmingham which I thought at the time was just another stadium. The date was October 4, 1969. The Mississippi quarterback was Archie Manning. Manning has said recently that he knows Legion Field was supposed to only hold about 70 000 fans. However, he is frequently told by at least 150 000 people that they were at that game. Then they ask if Joe Namath was the opposing quarterback.

The three of us were seated in good seats around the 35 yard line. As the game see sawed back and forth, it seemed like every play was a roll out pass. However, stats tell us that Manning completed 33 of 52 passes for 436 yards and 2 TDs. But he also ran 15 times for 104 yards and 3 TD's. Scott Hunter was no slouch. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 300 yards.

As the game came down to the last few seconds, Alabama was behind and needed a TD for the win. On a 4th down call, it was said that Hunter looked to Bear for the play. Bear could not decide, and yelled to the Offensive Coordinator for the play. He couldn't decide either, as he looked to the overhead booth for the play. Finally, Bear yelled to Hunter to just run the best play he could think of. Turned out to be the right play as Alabama scored and went ahead 33 to 32 and held on for the win.

ABC play by play announcer Chris Schenkel called it the most exciting game of his then 20 year broadcasting career. As I walking to our car I didn't know all the stats, but I now know that it was probably the most famous and exciting football game that I ever attended.

Salt Life

Friday departure delayed when M won concert tickets, which I am trying to sell. Want to go see Imagine Dragons?

Arrived in SC about 1145. Saturday I snuck in a trip to McDonalds when gassing up. Usual lunch at Wendys on the way and Saturday pm PaPa Johns pizza. Ceil added two long shopping trips to the grocery, WalMart, and Publix.

Kids woke up early to fix the breakfast their late grandfather had made them all their lives. Phil and I were the first two out on the beach, as usual. Spent most of the day out there with a sandwich and cheesecake lunch break.

The girls fixed breakfast for 2 straight days before breaking their streak. Will fixed it this morning.

Spending most of the time out at the beach, with short breaks inside to fix a sandwich.

Ceil went with brother Rusty to buy seven pounds of fresh shrimp for the low country boil, then boiled the corn on the cob to go with it. We all ate down the hall in Rusty's condo. After we ate we sat around and Matthew played the guitar and everyone sang.

At the same time I was finalizing the deal to sell Matthew's concert tickets. MC and Will and the girls have been working on jigsaw puzzles.

More beach time today. Almost finished reading Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. Ate at Bonefish tonight with our party of 19. Ceil had salmon and I had the chicken teriyaki bowl.

Scott Hunter later played for the Packers and Falcons. There is a guy at our high rise condo who looks like Stabler.

Braves: New Beats Old

At the All Star break let's compare some of the fan-favorites the Braves traded for prospects and to dump bad contracts to their replacements. The results may surprise you.

Fans are still moaning about the Craig Kimbrel trade. Fact is his replacement - veteran team leader Jason Grilli - has outperformed Kimbrel in almost every category. Kimbrel has more strikeouts but Grilli's strikeout to walk ratio is better - and Grilli has more saves.

Evan Gattis was traded to make way for rookie phenom Christian Bethancourt, who so far hasn't panned out. Insert veteran AJ Pierzynski, who has struck out less than Gattis and hit for a higher average, on base percentage, and OPS. AJ's slugging percentage is only slightly lower than the White Bear's. Gattis has almost exclusively DH'd for the Astros.

Both Nick Markakis and Cameron Maybin have outperformed the players they replaced - out-hitting and striking out less than Heyward and the Uptons. Even defensively Markakis is no drop-off from Jason Heyward. The hustling Maybin is a huge defensive upgrade over both Upton brothers.

Before the season I lobbied for the Braves to sign Ichiro Suzuki instead of Jonny Gomes. Both are veterans with excellent work ethics. Atlanta went with the cheaper Gomes for his greater clubhouse presence. He might add that, but Ichiro has clearly outperformed Gomes at the plate and in the field.

Top NFL Rookie Seasons?

Top 30 NFL rookies of all time, as listed by the Sporting News. Many list like this claim to be all-time then only go back to the 90's. This list goes way back, which is nice, but outstanding performances back in the 1950's with stats comparable to present day should be ranked higher, not lower.

And where would Herschel Walker's rookie seasons (USFL and NFL) rank? The list is titled NFL rookies, but included an AFL player. Evidently AFL stats from the early 60's are more legit that USFL stats from the mid 80's. Herschel's 1986 rookie season with the Cowboys ranks ahead of half the running backs on the list, and his 1983 rookie season with the Generals ranks behind only Gale Sayers' rookie season.

Instead of the overall ranking I will group the 30 players by position:

Wednesday's 80 Mile Trip

I don't know how in the world Jimmy Carter can make comments like that after teaching Sunday School for 60 years. Incredible. We truly live in the last days.

Wednesday: Left work just before six. Nancy gave Ceil a roast. Ceil loves the beef. At eight I had to drive M to Douglassville. First we had to stop and get gas for the 80 mile round trip. Then there were lane closures, then a car fire shut down two lanes of traffic just before our exit. Then M had forgotten deodorant so we had to stop at the grocery. More lane closures on the way back. Got home well after ten. So that was my evening.

The Braves win 6 of their last 8 games and all people can talk about are the two they lost. The season has been better than most expected, yet should they fade everyone will act like they were World Series favorites.

Usually over the course of a year one or two new red lights are added to my regular route to work. Well as of today I have one less stop sign. The Eves Road / Riverside Drive intersection near the river was reworked and the stop sign taken out.

Mathew Sings Again

Typical evening for me. Left work at 545 and headed to Cumming. Ate a hot dog from RaceTrac. Arrived at the coffee shop at 645. Got inside and M was the next singer up. This time he played his electric guitar and sang. I watched some of the other performers (including McKinnon and also her friend Victoria) but sat out in front during part. Video to follow.

On the way home I picked up Chickfila for M and his friend Jamin. Got home and packed for the trip.

Speaking of Cox, on the way home from work Wednesday I stopped by Kroger. As I was walking in Bobby Cox was checking out. White fishing shirt, shorts, flip flops. His limp seemed worse than when he's on the field. I thought about following him to see what he drove and where he lived but I had groceries to buy.

Every time I go to the Avalon it is brimming with people. Lots of restaurants and shops. Would be cool to live upstairs but all the people might get old. The Avalon has been open just short of one year. The site was cleared years ago but sat vacant for a long time.

El Felix is the place both M and A tried out for jobs. M is friends with the owners son. The owner owns several other restaurants in Atlanta. If a frizzy blond haired lady seated you, she works at M's school.

Five Weeks of Shoes

Take away the shoes I’m selling on eBay and all those already sold, and I still have so many shoes that I could wear a different pair every day for over five weeks (as long as one of the weeks is a vacation week). This includes wearing only shoes sensible enough to wear to work and church. Leave it to me to figure out a new and different way to list out all the shoes I own.

Photo Finish

It was the first photo finish in the history of the PRR. I didn’t see the finish of the last half mile, so I’m not sure what the runners were aware of. I would not compare it to Cowboys lineman Leon Lett showboating the last 20 yards into the Super Bowl end zone and having the ball stripped at the one yard line by Bills receiver Don Beebe. Greatest epic fail in Super Bowl history.

As I recall, there was an old Silver Skillet type place near Grady Stadium and Sig Samuels cleaners. Near the corner of Monroe and Eighth. Sig Samuels is still there but I’m pretty sure the restaurant is gone, replaced by something else. I lived right around the corner on Greenwood Avenue, and later down on Hillpine.

I never ate at the one on 14th Street, but we used to go to a place across the street called Bobby & Junes Country Kitchen, in a house painted brown. A meat and three. But for the most part at Tech we were set for lunch at the Baptist Center…aka Daisy’s Diner. Every day students and faculty flocked in to eat a decent lunch. Frozen meat or fresh fried or baked chicken. Yeast rolls every day. Mostly institutional food cooked with a loving touch by Southern hands. Seemed like in the late 70’s and early 80’s lunch only cost $1.50 or $1.75.

Monday night Matthew cooked a buffalo chicken pizza. Ceil cooked burgers for us and Anna. They all watched a movie and I watched the Braves and worked on the computer.

Tuesday night Ceil baked stuffed manicotti shells for supper, with salad and French bread. I did the dishes and watched some Braves and The Middle. W and MC when indoor rock wall climbing.

Looks like we need a new hot water heater. Last month’s natural gas bill was almost $200.00. When it rains it pours.

Will’s former classmate Holt has been on the UAB baseball team the past 2 years but hasn’t played much so far. Last summer he played in upstate New York. Right now he’s in Alaska playing for the Chugiak Chinooks. At least he’s getting some playing time, but he’s only hitting .245. The team average is only .227. Holt leads the team in triples and getting hit by pitch, but has struck out 22 times in 52 at bats – second most on the team. He is 4th on the team with a .702 OPS and second in OBP (.353).

Another teammate is playing summer ball for the Florence SC RedWolves. He is 2-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 7 appearances (6 starts / 35.1 innings). He leads the team in innings pitched, hits allowed, earned runs allowed, and most doubles and home runs allowed.  http://www.coastalplain.com/statistics/2015/flo.htm

Will’s high school classmate Kelly Arps finished 19th among all women in the 25-29 age group. Kelly is Kara’s older sister. The top thousand finishers receive special PRR mugs.

David Murphy finished in the top 24% of his age division, in the top third of all men, and in the top 23% overall,

Birthday Weekend

Friday I drove downtown to pick up our Peachtree numbers and encountered gridlock near the CFHOF. Made it to Turner Field early enough to participate in the Star Wars parade. Hung out with John Parkes for a while. Before the parade my friend Rob and I got to stand in the right field gate and watch BP. Phillies pitcher Luis Garcia threw balls to the two kids with us. Later I sat with Chad Eaton for an inning to chat. He brought his family to town for the race and Lenox fireworks. My car was running hot but when I left the game I drove to Cumming to fetch M who was watching fireworks at the fairgrounds with McKinnon.

Woke up early Saturday for the race. Ceil chickened out, making it more problematic for me and Will. I drove down 400 and dropped him off at the Buckhead Loop then parked at 5th and Myrtle – right next to my co-worker. Rode MARTA back to Lenox and sold my number to a young guy who would run a sub-one hour race, which will give me a good placement for next year. I wore a cheap plastic poncho in the constant rain, which was sometimes light and sometimes heavy. I started with the E group at 7:50 am and pretty much walked 16 minute miles the entire way. In Buckhead we saw a flash of lightning and thunder. Behind us the race waves were delayed starting the race.

At SPdL the only person I saw was Steve Head, so I shook his hand. Drew Kelly had already left to pick up Rob at the finish. Later I saw pictures of Dock and Charles handing out water. Overall the spectators were fewer in number due to the rain. On the uphill sections my pace was faster than many. I wore a pair of New Balance shoes I'd run the Peachtree in before, with thick socks, but for some reason my feet were sliding around inside the shoes. The shoes actually fit better after they were waterlogged. I carried Ceil's old phone in a ziplock bag to take pictures, but by the time I made it past Peachtree Battle the phone was so wet I couldn't work it without my glasses. The rain kept me cool so there was no need to stop for water. I was tempted to grab a chicken taco a restaurant near the West Peachtree intersection was giving away, but didn't.

I pulled off the poncho after I turned off Peachtree onto Tenth. When I neared the finish line I saw I could make it under the race clock's two hour mark, so I ran the last tenth of a mile. This also kept my finish time under 1:40:00, which was nice. Grabbed a T shirt and found Will near the stage. His knee was hurting, so we left immediately for the car. On the way we ran into MC's uncle, who lives near the park. Made it home by 10:30. I was tired and sore. After a trip to Kroger for Ceil I took a long nap.

At 6 pm we went to the Earharts for a small group cookout. Fourteen. Burgers, dogs, chips, salad, ice cream. We decided to not walk the hilly mile to watch fireworks, which was fine by me.

Sunday I went to JFBC. Bryant wasn't preaching but his teaching pastor fill-in did a good job. Also had communion.

Ceil stayed home to cook Will's birthday dinner: steak and chicken on the grille with scalloped potatoes and salad, and homemade apple pie and ice cream. Later Will went to play golf and C drove M to PCC. I took a nap, did some laundry, and picked up M.

This morning's doctor's appointment was uneventful – the blood clot hadn't dissipated enough to do a vein scan, so all I got was another ultrasound.

Turner Field Star Wars Night

Friday afternoon I made it down to Turner Field in time to visit my friends in the dollar line, even though I already had my special Star Wars ticket. Went inside and walked around before sitting for a spell in the shade, watching batting practice.
The 501st, a club of Star Wars fanatics, were out in force (no pun intended). Some bore a striking resemblance with the character they picked, like young Obi-Wan (third from right). Others not so much, like Princess Leia (in white).

I walked with Rob and his daughter to the parade marshaling ramp. We following a young lady and her son down the ramp, looking for others waiting to parade.
No one stopped us, and eventually we walked all the way to the right field gate. From there we stood for the next hour, watching the Phillies take batting practice.
Former Brave Jeff Francoeur was nearby, shagging flies with Ben Revere. Later I waved down relief pitcher Luis Garcia to toss balls to both kids in our small five person group. As we stood along the wall, unable to see the infield, a fast moving ground ball whizzed past us through the gate and into the groundskeeper's tractor garage.
For the most part the security guards stood out on the field and left us alone. At one point two of them retreated inside the open gate to check their phones. This was too good of a picture not to take.
Chewbacca ambled past. I was hoping for a photo, but his many keepers kept him occupied.
Finally the rest of the parade participants were led down the stadium ramp. The five of us early-birds could have been the first five in the parade, sort of like the drum major of the marching band. Instead we snuck in near the front, and walked out on the field.

The stands behind first base were mostly full. Even though most of the paraders were parents with their young costumed kids, I immediately got the feeling the seated fans were thinking "NERDS!" As I shared this sentiment with Rob by the time I got to the last word I realized his daughter might be listening, so I tried to stop myself.
The little kid and his young mom who waited with us (above left, in black) are in the above picture with Rob and his daughter (holding the ball in her right hand).
The entire evening had a Star Wars theme. When the tomahawk team was introduced Storm Troopers took over the T-shirt cannon duties.
Darth Vader and other storm troopers came out to guard the thrower of the first pitch and surround the pregame meeting between the umpires and managers.

The Phillies' batting order was introduced, their pictures replaced with Star Wars villains. Ryan Howard was replaced by Jabba the Hut. The Braves had posed for pictures in good guy attire. Nick Markakis (above) held his bat like a light saber.
New this year is an outfield clock to make sure the teams swap sides between innings quickly.
Chad Eaton was at the game with his family. In town for the race, I spotted his son's green shirt. No one was seated next to Chad so I snuck in, snapped this picture, and posted it on Facebook. He didn't see it, so finally I poked him and we had a nice chat.

The Peachtree You Don't See

Some of my T-shirts. After 28 years they take up a lot of space. Thinking about selling them on eBay. No many PTRR shirts from the 80's and 90's for sale, so I've got that going.

Took a camera with me today and snapped some pictures of some of the less glorious parts of the race people tend to forget: the long journey to the start line.
Waiting at the MARTA Station. By the time the train comes the platform will be full. At least there are fans running.
At the Lenox Station everyone piles off the jam-packed train. You get the feeling you aren't the most out of shape person in Atlanta.
There are more people being you than ahead of you.
You can't walk up Lenox to Peachtree. You gotta take side streets so you come out at your group. Without glasses all photos are blurry.
When you get to your group you wait some more. Loudspeakers blast music. The Star Spangled Banner is sung. The race begins, but you don't move. Helicopters buzz. Always interesting to look for spectators in the high rise on the right.
Slowly you approach the start line.
The huge flag is held aloft by a crane.
AND THEN: you wait some more.
After three miles my camera was drenched. Here's the blurry view looking back from the Peachtree Creek bridge back toward Lindburgh. After that my camera gave up the ghost.

Gridlock

Traffic on the downtown connector may have been light yesterday, but down around Centennial Park and the World Congress Center cars were gridlocked. Sat on Marietta Street four car length from Baker Street for 30 minutes - even though a policeman was "directing traffic" at the light. Several cars made U-turns. Eventually I turned right on Baker and parked next to the Georgia Dome and new Falcons stadium, and walked into the Running Expo to pick up our Peachtree numbers. So did the other 60,000 runners.

With traffic management like this, no wonder the Braves are moving out of downtown.

Let Them Eat Cake

The minor league baseball team in New Orleans (the Zephyrs) wears navy jerseys with NOLA on them. The Marlins recently promoted prospect Austin Nola from Jacksonville to New Orleans. Lots of people are saying he’ll wear his name on the front and back of his jersey – but actually the Zephyrs don’t wear names on the backs of their navy jerseys. Their white home jerseys have names, but not NOLA on the front.

QUIZ: who has worn their name on the back of his jersey AND the front, at the same time? Hint: NBA.

ANSWER: When the Western Conference played against the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game, Laker Jerry West wore his name on both the front and back of his jersey. Country singer Charlie Pride’s nephew Curtis played baseball for the minor league Nashville Pride. He also wore his name on the front and back of his jersey. When Lee May played for the White Sox he wore his birthday on the back of his jersey. In the 70’s pitcher Andy Messersmith wore “Channel 17” on the back of his Braves jersey. Johnny Podres was a coach for the San Diego Padres – before the Padres wore names on their backs.

Wednesday morning two co-workers were in town to talk about my customer. I got dragged into a meeting with short notice, needing to bring in data to justify our viewpoint. I wound up working on the report the entire day. That was Wednesday. Tuesday had been month end stuff and Monday recovering from not being able to do my job all last week. Worked until 6:30 last night but did get a lot done. Already being hit with more special projects this morning.

Not much going on at home. Ceil cooked burritos and later drove M to Publix. I worked on the computer and turned on American Ninja Warrior and The Middle. Will got in late after attending a wedding cake tasting in Rome. Anna returns from Clemson today, where she was hanging out with her cousins.

July Bobblehead Schedule

The Braves have succeeded in building up one the most highly anticipated bubbleheads of the entire 2015 season: the Jason Grilli Star Wars X-Wing Fighter. Originally scheduled to be a Craig Kimbrel X-Wing, the Grilli is the first full spaceship bobblehead in existence. Early eBay sales have only been in the $40.00 range, a figure many thought would be much higher.

In July I will attend 4 or 5 games and collect at least 5 new bobbleheads Grilli, Teheran, Schlehuber, Cox, and Freeman/Gomes.

Others that look most interesting are Lance Berkman, Craig Biggio (HOF), Lou Brock, Smokies Kris Bryant, Al Hrabosky, Randy Johnson (HOF), Quakes Kershaw (but too expensive), Bruce Lee (but too expensive), David Price, Star Wars AJ Pollock, Maury Wills (my NC friend Matt Campbell is stocking up on Maury), and Michael Young. Not sure I will move mountains to trade for any.

My ever expanding collection is making a mess of the house, and Will's interest in one day inheriting the collection is waning as he approaches his nuptuals. Going forward I may have to focus my collection (Braves? Mascots? Hall of Famers?) and start selling off the rest. I start the month with 163 different bobbleheads plus a few extras to trade.

Falcons Number 22

Defensive back Rolland Lawrence (1973-1980) from tiny Tabor was the longest tenured 22 in Falcon history. No slouch was he. Before and after the Rolland era was a literal revolving door of number 22's.

Lee Calland 66-68 Louisville CB
John Mallory 1969 West Virginia safety
Richard Williams 1983 Memphis State RB
Sean Thomas 1985 TCU DB
Dennis Woodberry 1986 South Arkansas CB
Brenard Wilson 1987 Vanderbilt safety

Cornerback Charles Dimry (1988-1990 UNLV) was one of the most beleaguered Falcons in history.

Volatile cornerback Tim McKyer (1991-1992 and 1996 Texas Arlington) brought the bad press to himself.

Alton Montgomery 1993-1995 Houston safety
Lenny McGill 1997 Arizona State CB
Gerald McBurrows 1999-2003 Kansas safety
Leigh Torrence 2005 Stanford CB
Chevis Jackson 2008-2009 LSU CB
Jacquizz Rogers 2011 Oregon State RB

Asante Samuel (2012-2013 UCF CB) was good but didn't last as long as Lawrence.

Zeke Motta 2014 Notre Dame safety

NFL: Bobby Layne, Emmitt Smith, Paul Krause. Mike Haynes. Mercury Morris. Bob Hayes. Roger Wehrli. Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie wore 22 at Boston College.

UGA: Richard Samuel was the lone Bulldog standout to wear the number.

Braves: Exit McDonough's Jason Heyward. Enter Woodstock's Nick Markakis. Centerfielder Rowland Office inspired a blog. Bunter extraordinaire Brett Butler. Ken Griffey Sr. bought Junior to the locker room. Shortstop Walt Weiss made the great play in Houston. The injury-plagued Marcus Giles.

Tech retired 22 for John Spider Salley when he graduated. RB turned QB Bucky Shamburger. WR Dez White had the famous return in the fog. DB James Butler. Transfer RB Tashard Choice.

NBA: Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor was named ROY and played in 11 all star games.
