Psalm 46: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
TOMMY JOHN [SABR Bio] pitched almost 12 years before his famous surgery in late 1974. He rehabbed for all of 1975 then pitched another 14 seasons, averaging more than 180 innings a year. He began in MLB with Cleveland in 1963-64 & played for OAK in 1985. John was born in Terre Haute ("high earth" literally), Indiana. He lost against Dean Chance on both 14-Sep- & 21-Sep-1963. Chance's Cy Young Award in 1964 was the last awarded to an AL pitcher when the award went to only one pitcher in all of MLB. Chance's CYA in 1964 was preceded & and followed by wins by Sandy Koufax. John's W/L% in 1973 was .696, but in 1974 was .813.
VADA PINSON [SABR Bio] not only played with Frank Robinson at McClymonds High in Oakland, California, they were teammates on the Reds from 1958-65. There has been neither another Vada nor another Pinson in the history of major league baseball 1871-2022. Pinson was born in Tennessee, the Volunteer State. Vada suffered more career strikeouts against Sandy Koufax than did any other major leaguer: 34 X from1959-66. Pinson's son leads a campaign to have him elected to the Hall of Fame. HOF chances for Pinson are technically possible, given his career WAR of 54.2, but very few people say he has a strong chance. Vada Pinson, Jr. is friends with many SABR members on Facebook.
Traffic on Ponce and North near Ponce City Market is already gridlocked. Building another skyscraper ain't going to help things.
