Good Day to be Stetson

BREAKING: Bennett has been named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

BREAKING: Stetson was named winner of the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the nation's top player who was once a walk-on. He was a finalist last year.

Note how Stetson’s numbers stack up against the other Heisman hopefuls. Many argued that Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker should've been a finalist (aren't the finalists the top vote getters?). Hooker missed at least a game & a half to injury. His Vols lost two games (including one to Bennett's Dawgs).

UNC freshman QB Drake Maye had a freshman year worthy of Heisman consideration, but faded toward the end of the season. Maye was out-dueled in the ACC Championship Game by Clemson’s freshman QB Cade Klubnik. Will be interesting to follow these two kids for the next few years.

Stetson has moved up to sixth in the nation in QBR. His 96.7 QBR against LSU on Saturday was better than the other 22 QB’s that played last weekend (Klubnik’s 94.1 ranked second).

After Dabo named Cade Klubnik his starting QB for the Orange Bowl, Clemson QB DJU announced his intention to transfer. “Experts” on social media projected he’d land at UCLA, Oregon, Washington, or Notre Dame. Let the buyer beware.

Former Mets pitcher Jacob deGromm signed with the Rangers for 6 years $137 million. Good for him. He has a history of injuries, and is already in his mid-30’s. It was rumored he wanted to sign with the Braves, who were wise to not give such a long and luxurious contract to a pitcher with so much wear and tear.

The Mets will be paying Verlander and Scherzer $40 million each. Neither is a spring chicken. The Mets owner is rich rich rich. Money does not always translates to pennants: ask Ted Turner and George Steinbrenner.

I am forgetting what happened on Friday. Worked late, and was the last person to leave the office. Had to drive C to Whole Foods to get groceries. Supper was stir fry.

Saturday morning golf. Back home for a bit, then lunch at Taqueria Tsunami with five other guys. Good food and fellowship. We went crazy and ordered fried chicken instead of grilled, and added salt to the chips. Really living on the edge stuff. Later C and I watched the UGA at game at the Earharts. Ate supper during halftime. Chicken tetrazini and salad. Then home to watch the Clemson game. C fell asleep.

Earlier M had gone over to cook meat with Will, who had friends over to watch the soccer game. Anna & Caleb went from Will’s house to the UGA game.

Sunday School and worship. Drove C to crowded Costco, where I grabbed the hot dog and Pepsi special. Later C and I met Will and Shivonne at Truist Park for the season ticket play day. Shiv patrolled the outfield grass. Will and I had a catch, and Shivonne got to meet Blooper. She kept looking at him. Not much rest all weekend, but good times.

Ran four miles this morning at the gym. Working from home today. Was supposed to get three new exterior doors installed, but it was cancelled due to the rain until later in the week. Really messed up my schedule.

Small group tonight. Anna got a tree. Former member Jamie is back in town after serving in Spain for three months.

Good place to visit in north Georgia: the Misty Mountain Railroad.

CARL YASTRZEMSKI [SABR Bio] played the most games for a single major league team: 3,308 games, all for Boston. Only Stan Musial (3,026 with St Louis) and Cal Ripken Jr. (3,001 with Baltimore) also appeared in 3,000 career games without changing teams. He was the first American League player to collect at least 100 hits in each of his first 20 major league seasons: from 1961-80. In the NL, Pete Rose (1963-1985) started his career with 23 consecutive 100 hit seasons. Hank Aaron reached 20 straight even before Rose did, from 1954-73. At 277, Detroit’s Rudy York held the record for most career HR by a player whose last name begins with Y. Yaz broke that with his 278th in 1973. Yaz’s career HR total of 452 is still the Y record.

I wonder if Don Head was ever on The Popeye Club, with Officer Don and orville the Dragon?

I was on it twice. Fun fact - Steve's father in law, Dave Riggs, is good friends with Don Kennedy and has worked with him on his radio show "Big Band Jump." Dave is a huge audiophile and thousands of records and cd's from that era.
