Saturday evening we went with Lee and Nancy to a new Chinese restaurant across from Merchants Walk – Fire Stone. It is located next door to the Firestone Tire Center. That afternoon I looked at the menu on line. Every entrée said "Spicy". I wasn't sure what I was going to order. I decided I would ask if they had my regular dish. When we arrived Nancy saw someone she knew (she always does). While the women were chatting, Lee and I talked to the husband. He said the restaurant was great, that they would cook you whatever you wanted.
I found sweet & sour chicken on the menu, so I was happy. Ate the whole thing. C and the others got to go boxes, but we usually have so many leftovers in our fridge, I didn't feel bad about eating all mine. Pretty good. Went home and watched another episode of Doctor Cha, and some of the Braves.
I like Marlowes but C does not. Not sure why. My other friend Reid takes his wife to Marlowes. So does my friend Rob, but they go to a wide variety of restaurants.
MY BEEF: some people just have to talk. I see people in stores shopping, and they're on the phone just talking away. Who is listening to them?
Very few people are good listeners. They're good at asking questions, knowing the other person is more important to them. My friend Rob is like that. I will talk and talk and later I kick myself for not asking him more questions.
I am slow to talk. I try to listen to what the other person is saying, not sitting there waiting for a pause so I can start talking. When I am interrupted I stop talking and start listening. Some people keep talking when they are interrupted, so then two people are talking at the same time. Who is listening ???
Even on text messages you can tell that the other person is typing. I type slow, but try to answer a question before the other person sends another text, so the conversation remains a back and forth. If a person sends two texts, I have to edit my text to be clear about which question I'm answering. So hard for us old guys to communicate these days !
In our Sunday School we divide into small groups of 4 or 5, so everyone has a chance to talk. We have a list of questions to go over (the ones I mail to you). Each week we discuss the previous week's sermon. Don't have to talk, but everyone sure gets the class. We always break up into groups of either men or women.
After church we stopped by Whole Foods. Turned on the radio and the Braves were in the 5th inning. God home and watched the rest of the game. Haley Hurt (and maybe David) was at the Sunday game. A&C went to the Saturday night game. So did Gayle Nelson. I just missed Celtics / Sixers. Turned it over but it had ended "early". They were interviewing Harden. I had watched the Braves and then the golf tourney. Also cut the grass.
CARL ERSKINE [SABR Bio] broke Howard Ehmke's 24-year-old World Series single-game strikeout record. Philadelphia's Ehmke had K'ed 13 Cubs in game one on 08-Oct-1929. Brooklyn's Erskine K'ed 14 Yankees in game three on 02‑Oct‑1953. That record was broken by Sandy Koufax who K'ed 15 Yankees in game one on 02-Oct-1963. The record is currently held by Bob Gibson who K'ed 17 Tigers in game one on 02-Oct-1968. Erskine was the first Dodger in the Modern Era to throw two no-hitters in his career, on 19-Jun-1952 (Cubs), then the Giants on 12-May-1956. He threw the first major league pitch at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, on 18-Apr-1958, Erskine surrendered the stadium's first hit, to the first batter, rookie Jim Davenport, and its first home run (to former NL MVP Hank Sauer). Also the Coliseum's first double (Willie Kirkland) and triple (Bob Schmidt).
Know this guy with Conan? He has a new book coming out. Comedian Steven Wright. Wicked funny.
