Born in the USA

As an employee of a decent-sized corporation, I must follow certain rules and behaviors while representing my company, lest I risk being fired. Just heard of a high-level employee at a major media company who was asked to leave because of comments she’d made in a meeting. Now I’m trying to wrap my mind around the anti-American protests we’re already seeing from athletes representing the United States. While Americans certainly have the right to protest, why would an athlete who’s worked their entire life to make it to the Olympics disparage the country that is paying their way to Tokyo?

Perhaps it’s time the Olympics drops the parade of nations and have athletes compete in uniforms without country designations. Drop the playing of the national anthem of the country of the gold medal winner. Sure, a big part of why so many million viewers from all around the world tune is to see athletes from their own country compete and win. Sorry, but the last thing I want to see and hear are protests while watching the Olympics. I just won’t watch. I’m surprised some yahoo politician in Washington hasn’t already apologized for American Olympic dominance in past years. Perhaps the USA should give some of their gold medals to other countries.

I realize a lot of older folk like me are voicing similar sentiments. I'm uncomfortable being the get off my lawn type, but i consider this opinion as valid.

Last weekend Anna went to the Atlanta United game with two friends. Supposedly it’s fun, but I’m not in any hurry to go to a soccer game.

We’ll be going on a new computer system by 2024, so next year I may travel to learn more about it. I’ll try to spend a week in Memphis and / or Dallas or Houston.

Man losing weight is tough. I’ve done okay, but need to buckle down. Both on the eating and exercising part.

According to a study published in the journal of Nature Human Behaviour conducted by Princeton University,  people take in subtle cues to determine a subject’s degree of competence. These “impressions of competence predict important real-world outcomes, including political success and CEO selection. The same face when seen with ‘richer’ clothes was judged significantly more competent than with ‘poorer’ clothes.”

ALBERT PUJOLS  [B-R Bio] has hit the most home runs of anyone born in the Dominican Republic. Has 675 career HR as of 20-Jul-2021. Pujols had 620 HR when he stroked his 3,000th hit on 4-May-2018. He became the fourth member of a very elite group, joining Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Alex Rodriguez, with at least 600 career HR and 3,000 hits. Aaron was the first. Pujols was MVP in the Class A Midwest League playing for the 2000 Peoria Chiefs.

AL SIMMONS  [SABR Bio] was elected to the Hall of Fame by the thinnest possible margin. Was included on 75.38% of the ballots in 1953, the lowest of all players voted in by the BBWAA. The next lowest percentages belonged to Ferguson Jenkins (75.4%), Ralph Kiner (75.41) and Willie Keeler (75.55). In the 1934 All-Star game, “King” Carl Hubbell struck out 5 batters in a row, all of whom would be elected to the Hall of Fame. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Simmons & Joe Cronin.

In the 7th inning of game four of the 1929 World Series, Simmons homered off Cubs’ ace Charlie Root to open the onslaught. Foxx singled and scored when two successive teammates singled.  After two pitching changes and only one out, Simmons & Foxx singled in succession and each scored when Jimmy Dykes doubles.  Two strikeouts closed out the inning, but not before the A’s had racked up a Series-record ten runs in the inning, wiping out an 8-run Cubs lead.    In Simmons’ second full season, he was edged out for league MVP by a player who had barely a third of his WAR. Simmons’ hefty WAR of 6.6 plus a major-league-leading 253 hits and 392 TB still left him four voting points behind WSH’s SS Roger Peckinpaugh (124 H, 160 TB, 2.7 WAR) in the AL in 1925.

For league media days, GT, UGA, and Clemson posted similar "getting on the plane" photos. Which coach looks least like a coach?

I'm digging UGA QB JT Daniel's tie clasp (above right).
Buck Belue said Daniels was uncomfortable in a coat and tie,
that he hated leaving his trademark turtleneck in Athens.
