Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural

In Sunday School we discussed a quote from Lincoln’s second inaugural address. Not sure, but Abe may have become a more devoted Christian while in office, perhaps after his infant son Willie passed away in 1862.

Fervently do we pray—that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's 250 years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said 3,000 years ago, so still it must be said, "the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether". With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in…to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves…

I was at the game when Braves rookie phenom Brad Komminsk hit the grand slam during the Goody’s Home Run Jackpot inning, earning a lucky fan $25,000.00. Sitting in the left field bleachers, the Lima Ohio native’s blast sailed right toward me, landing a few rows in front of my seat.

Saturday afternoon the AT&T repairmen came out to fix our wi-fi. He had to go back and forth to the main box in the neighborhood to find and make the repair. Never had to come in the house. I told C we needed to leave by 5:30 to make it to Houstons in time for our 6:15 reservation. The guy had our wi-fi fixed just in time, but we didn’t leave until 5:45.

Great service at Houstons. C ordered a grilled tuna dish that she loved. I got the cheeseburger, which is piled high with lettuce. Looks great, but doesn’t quite compare with other fancy burgers like at King + Duke or even Bad Daddys Burger Bar. The stringy fries are only just average. I’m sure the steaks and other dishes are probably better, but the Houstons burger is just okay.

Drove home. C turned on the TV. After over 24 hours it was finally working again. Then like one minute later the power went out. Complete darkness for over 20 minutes. I still hadn’t sat down, instead attending to laundry and other chores.

In fact I probably overdid it on Saturday. After golf I spent the day on housework. Cleaned seven rooms of the house, and kept the washer dryer going the whole time, all the way to midnight. Folded all the clean clothes and put them away. Over 14000 steps. Wore me out. I could tell I’m still not 100% recovered from being sick. Before bed I noticed how hard the wind was blowing, so I quickly reorganized the garage so I could pull my car inside.

Skipped the gym again this morning in an effort to get 100% healthy. My lungs just feel heavy. Small group tonight. Lunch meeting tomorrow.

He wants you to grow up spiritually.” He “gives us our time on earth to build and strengthen our character for heaven. Warren adds: “Jesus did not die on the cross just so we could live comfortable, well-adjusted lives. His purpose is deeper: he wants to make us like himself.”

JACKIE ROBINSON [SABR Bio] was the first player to win the Rookie of the Year award at one position, then MVP at a different position. He was NL ROY for Brooklyn in 1947 at 1B, then NL MVP in 1949 at 2B. The Chicago College All-Star Game was played from 1934 to 1976.  Robinson played in the 1941 G and caught a touchdown pass against the Monsters of the Midway. First Lieutenant Robinson was scheduled to go to Europe with the U.S. Army’s 761st Battalion, where they fought Nazi forces during the Battle of the Bulge and in the Rhineland. Spahn was famously part of that horrendous battle. Robinson military trajectory was altered by a court martial, where he was acquitted.
