Good For A Girl

Finished “Sea of Tranquility” and started the biography of a former middle distance runner: “Good For A Girl: A Woman Running In a Man’s World”, by Lauren Fleshman. She was a star in high school, won several NCAA championships at Stanford, then turned pro and was sponsored by Nike - who distributed a popular poster of her.

Now she uses her experience to coach young female runners. She discusses the pressures women runners face to remain skinny, but in doing so suffer injuries from decreased bone density and lack of nutrition. A New York Times article about her:

Millie turned two yesterday. Months. Anna and Goose paid her a visit.

Tuesday: took me forever to get home. Worked past 5:45. Rough day. I seemed to catch every red light. Drove to the big shopping center in Peachtree Corners to get an item for my phone – but the store was shuttered. Construction in the shopping center and drivers blocking the road added to my wait. Had to fight traffic north and west to Avalon in Alpharetta. More red lights. Finished there at 6:30.

Made it to the restaurant by 7 pm for boneless wings and fries. Was able to watch the start of Braves Angels. Strider struck out Ohtani to break the record Strider set last year – fastest to what, 200 strikeouts in a season. Someone in wacko media land blew Strider’s postgame comments way out of proportion.

Then to RaceTrac for a drink. Was after 8 pm before I got home. Watched another episode of King of the Land.

Up early this morning to run 4 miles. Tried to take it easy but still had a decent time. Coworker Sherryl brought key lime pie.

SHOHEI OHTANI [Wiki Bio] was the first player to win MVP unanimously the same season it was the first time he qualified for the batting title. In 2021 Ohtani had 46 HR, 100 RBI, and 26 stolen bases as a batter; and went 9-2 W-L with a 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 130.1 innings pitched. Over the past 50 years he is one of just seven pitchers to hit a home run in the first inning, 04-Apr-2021. The others were Carlos Zambrano (02-July-2006 & 17-Sept-2006), Robert Person (02-June-2002), Tyler Green (23-Aug-1995), Dwight Gooden (21-Sept-1985), Randy Lerch (17-May-1979), and Rick Rhoden (30-July-1977). Both of Ohtani’s parents came from athletic backgrounds: father Toru Otani was a baseball player, having played the outfield for a corporate-sponsored non-professional baseball team. Mother Kayoko was a serious competitive badminton player. To this day, Shohei says he has never beat his mother in a badminton match.

DENISON: artificial intelligence is just one arena where our technology has outpaced our ethics. Chatbots are taking over drive-through ordering systems at Hardees. According to the CEO of the company providing this technology to nearly 350 restaurants around the country, “In three years I don’t think there’s going to be any human taking an order in any drive-through in the US.”

ME: I just hope that before this happens they fix those speakers you can’t hear for all the static and squawking.

Nothing like a golf car modeled after the iconic 1977 Trans Am.
