A Rare Fair Catch Free Kick

Last night time expired in the first half after the Chargers had fair caught a punt. There was a penalty on the Broncos. By rule the Chargers could run one more play from the line of scrimmage: the Denver 47 yard line. The Chargers opted for a rare fair catch free kick. The players lined up like a kickoff. Dicker the Kicker booted the ball through the uprights from the line of scrimmage 57 yards aways, and the Chargers received three points.

Social media was blowing up about the play. Most don’t know the rule. I first saw a free kick attemped in a Falcons preseason game. Former Chargers QB Dan Fouts called into the TV broadcast to share how he’d convinced head coach Tommy Prothro to attempt the last free kick in Chargers history. I shared a blog post I had written about free kicks over ten years ago. There haven’t been that many successful free kicks. Paul Hornung made one back in the 60’s.

I caught last night’s Final Jeopardy. The category was SUPER BOWL HISTORY. I would have wagered everything. The answer: “The only NFL team to play in a Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, that hasn’t been back to the Super Bowl”. Do you know the question?

R.I.P. ROCKY COLAVITO [SABR Bio] was the first player in the Modern Era to have both a 4-home-run game and a 7-hit game. The 4 HR/G for Cleveland on 10-Jun-1959 and the 7 hit game for the Tigers on 24-Jun-1962. He was the last 20th-century American League player to hit four homers in a game. He played a full season without a single error, the first qualifying outfielder to do so. In 1965, Colavito played in 162 games, had 274 chances with zero errors. He was standing on first base when he learned that he was the subject one of the most controversial baseball trades of his generation. On 17-Apr-1960, Cleveland traded him to the Tigers for batting champ Harvey Kuenn. When the trade became public, Indians fans were outraged and called it one of the worst in Cleveland sports history, going so far as to say that it cursed the Indians, contributing to or even causing decades of struggles. Colavito always disavowed he existence of a curse or his possible part in it. The original Home Run Derby was filmed in December 1959 in Los Angeles at the west coast’s Wrigley Field - the series aired in syndication from 9-Jan to 2-Jul-1960. It was a precursor to the Home Run Derby held now in conjunction with the annual MLB All-Star Game. When Willie Mays died in June of 2024, Colavito became its last surviving former participant. Coaches knew about his strong arm and twice used him to pitch in games. In his first outing on 13-Aug-1958(2), he tossed 3 hitless innings in relief of Hoyt Wilhelm. On 25-Aug-1968(1) at Yankee Stadium, pitching on ten years’ rest, the Bronx native fulfilled a dream with 2-1/3 more hitless frames against Detroit. After an Al Kaline double, Colavito retired Willie Horton to close the inning. Rocky was once suspended for charging into the stands. During the game on 12-May-1961, Colavito charged into the stands to intervene in a fight between his father and a New York fan, a “drunken bum” in Colavito’s words, who had been harassing Rocky’s wife. AL President Joe Cronin opted not to fine Colavito, saying: “It wasn’t the right thing for the boy to go up into the stands, but I guess it was natural for him to want to help his father.” Colvavito’s fine singing voice was another of his talents. He recorded a few songs, showcasing his baritone voice.

DENISON: two astronauts Williams are stuck in space. When they arrived at the International Space Station last June, they were supposed to return home in 8 to 10 days. However, the vessel that transported them developed so many problems that it returned to our planet unmanned, leaving them marooned. Now NASA is reporting the capsule that will bring them home won’t launch until late March 2025 at the earliest.

FINAL JEAPORDY QUESTION: who are the New York Jets? I got it right, by the way.

My Playoff Picks

Picking Tennessee to beat Ohio State is intriguing, and quite probably correct. I will pick the Buckeyes just to be different. Indiana could very well upset the Irish, but advance no further. Dawgs could get lucky and beat Oregon, but Lanning may just have the secret sauce to know Georgia’s weak spots. I would pick the Dawgs to go all the way but I'll have a better chance to win my pool if I pick Oregon, even if I am wrong. My playoff picks:

12.20 800 Notre Dame beats Indiana in South Bend

12.21 1200 Penn State beats SMU in Happy Valley

12.21 400 Texas beats Clemson in Austin

12.21 800 Ohio State beats Tennessee in Columbus

12.31 730 Fiesta Penn State beats Boise State

01.01 100 Peach Texas beats Arizona State

01.01 500 Rose Oregon beats Ohio State

01.01 845 Sugar UGA beats Notre Dame

1.09 Orange UGA beats Penn State

1.10 Cotton Oregon beats Texas

1.20 Oregon beats UGA

With all the players opting out of bowl games and entering the transfer portal, its just not worth it to pick the other bowl games. Sad that they're all the more meaningless. GT vs Vandy should be a good game. Brent Key will have the Jackets prepared. So great that both GT QBs Haynes King and Philo are returning for the 2025 season.

I left work yesterday around 515 and drove home. Ceil was sitting Millie, so I got to play were her for a while. Left for small group at 645. A good long discussion on Luke chapters 9 and 10. Didn’t get home until almost 10 pm. Millie was asleep upstairs, so I straightened up a little and took out the trash.

The performance in Sandy Springs didn’t start until 8 pm, and Shivonne was sleepy before it began. When W&MC arrived at 1030 to pick up Millie, Shivvy was fast asleep.

Skipped the gym this morning due to some logistical issues, after I had gotten dressed in gym clothes in time to go. Stopped by McDonalds for their dollar deal: a tiny sausage burrito.

Night Golf: the Downside

Yesterday I tried to get an earlier start at Candler Park, with mixed results. Lost three of my precious light up golf balls.

1. Hit a halfway decent mulligan, then a worm burner, then hit three shots up onto the elevated green level. Hit 4 good lag putts. “Bogey”.

2. Hit two decent tee shots with light up balls, but one rolled near a tree with leaves on the ground, and never found it. Chipped short, chipped long.

3. Hit one tee shot short that got a good roll, then a mulligan onto the green. Lags weren’t great. Bogey.

4. Flub, then an okay mulligan. Hit a third green light up ball that felt good, but when it hit it the light went out. Never found it.

5. Hit a good 6 iron to the front fringe. Hit a mulligan that bounced into a pile of leaves. Never found it.

6. Hit a decent 6 iron off the tee. Used a regular ball on my mulligan, and pulled it into the left brush. A goner. Decent 5 iron. Hit a couple of chips onto the green. Two putt for a “bogey”.

7. Hit an okay mulligan up under the trees on the right. Poked out with my 3 iron, though none were great. Pulled one 5 iron left, but the mulligan hugged the right side. Lost one ball but found another. Chipped onto the green. Two putt for a “double”.

8. Neither of my drives were great, but I hit a couple of good 7 iron approach shots. Three chips formed a 20 foot triangle around the hole. Two putt for a “bogey”.

9. My first hybrid sailed straight into a tree – and bounced back almost all the way to the tee box. Better mulligan. Three decent chips. Lots of leaves on the sloped green. “Double”.

My 60th nine of the year, Would be nice to play 75 nines next year. Heard the Bryson and the others played night golf last night. Totally different from my experience.

Wednesday: up early to lift weights at the gym. On the way to work I cashed in the McDonalds dollar deal of the day for a caramel frappe.

Tonight W&MC are taking Shivonne to the children’s theater performance of Frozen in Sandy Springs. Ceil is keeping Millie. I have small group.

We haven’t received many Christmas cards yet. Whitaker Kat & Joe, Hendrick, Sluder, and Watson. That may be it so far.

EDDIE MATHEWS [SABR Bio] is the only player to play for the same franchise in three separate cities: the Boston BravesBSN (1952); the Milwaukee BravesMLN (1953-1965); & the Atlanta BravesATL (1966). He is the youngest player to lead the majors in home runs for a season in the Live-Ball Era. In his age 21 season, Mathews hit 47 HR to lead the majors. An action shot of his swing during a night game graces the cover of the debut issue of Sports Illustrated, a weekly magazine owned by Time, Inc. dated 16-Aug-1954SI is no longer issued weekly or even monthly, but it is still around. His minor league teams’ cities seemed to be predicting the future. In 1951 alone, he played for squads in AA Atlanta & AAA Milwaukee. Playing for the Crackers, Mathews was one of two players to hit a home run into the distant magnolia tree in centerfield of Ponce de Leon Park.

Tiger Sighting

Looking forward to next weekend’s PNC Championship in Orlando. Participants must have won a major championship or the Players Championship. This year’s participants include Lee Trevino, Fred Couples, Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington, Trevor Immelman, Justin Leonard, Nick Faldo, Nelly Korda, Annika, Stewart Cink, John Daly, Nick Price, Gary Player, Mark O’Meara, Tom Lehman, Bernhard Langer, Matt Kuchar, David Duval, and Tiger Woods. Also Charlie Woods and the other siblings.

The Independence Bowl found another opponent for Army – Louisiana Tech. I’m just now realizing that La Tech plays their home games in the Independence Bowl stadium there in Shreveport. Marshall had to drop out of the bowl due to so many players transferring.

Ate dinner Friday night at the Chiles house: chicken cordon bleu. Very tasty, and a good time. Nancy and Noelle were interested in my daily blog, so I may write an explanation post. Stay tuned.

Saturday morning after golf I was putting my little cart back in my trunk. When it was folding up it clamped down and squeezed my finger, causing a bad cut on my right thumb. Still having to wear a bandade which hampers my typing.

Saturday we cleaned out Matthew’s bedroom. Seemed like we just moved the mess to other rooms. I set up train tracks around the base of our Christmas tree. A&C brought Goose over to play with Winnie. Anna and Caleb were visiting during that TD that Navy scored, so I wasn’t able to really understand the penalty. Used to be you couldn’t spike the ball in college. Not sure if it was that or if he screamed in the direction of the Army defender. Didn’t seem like CBS showed much of the politicians in attendance, but then again I was only watching bits and pieces.

Sunday School and worship. Then I drove Ceil on a couple of errands. Leftover tenderloin and potato soup. Watched the Chiefs game. Laundry. Gassed up Ceil’s car.

Cashed in more McDonalds deals. Yesterday was their Chickfila type sandwich. Today a sausage McGriddle.

MAX SCHERZER [B-R Bio] is currently an unsigned free agent, but has publicly stated that he is not considering retirement. His current career WAR is greater than those of retired Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell, Whitey Ford, Jim Palmer Sandy Koufax. With another of his typical seasons, he could easily also pass Robin Roberts, Nolan Ryan & Bob Gibson. David Price, a teammate of Scherzer on Detroit (2014) and the Dodgers (2021).said "He's definitely a different breed, always has been. Just seeing the way he goes about things. He's a machine."

I played golf this morning. Arrived at work late and will leave early. Team dinner tonight.

Article: ways to be interesting.

The US could have been better prepared for the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Had US government agencies better communicated with each other, the September 11 attacks could have been prevented. Now with tensions around the world threatening for widespread war to break out, the US government says the large drones flying around military based and nuclear installations are of no concern, without any real information about where they came from or who sent them. Based on recent history, how can the government be trusted?

The Joy of Advent

Clay Smith JFBC

Matthew 2:13-18

Dec 17 1903 the Wright Brothers had their first flight. Telegraphed their sister in Ohio  "had successful first flight. Hope to be home for Christmas". Sis shared the telegram with the newspaper. The next day the story read "local brothers hope to be back for Christmas" without a word about the flight.

Easy to miss the point of Christmas. Movies goose bump feelings of temporary joy, unlike the Bible story. Missing the point of Christmas was our pastor’s first point, and he spent a good chunk of time on it. I was only able to peck out a portion of his comments.

Not a very joyful passage. Joseph had to flee to Egypt. Joseph always obeyed God. Helped fulfill the scriptures: "out of Egypt I will call my son".

Herod was known for his brutality. Killed his own sons. Ordered that all the baby boys be slaughtered. Reminds us that since we live in a fallen world, bad things happen.

Rachel, the wife of Jacob, died in childbirth. Genesis 35:16-21. Jacob set up a memorial stone near Bethlehem. This will take on symbolic meaning for Israel...

Jeremiah 40:1 the same place becomes a staging place for the exile of the Israelites.

God turned Rachel's mourning into joy. Jeremiah 31:10-16 so much to be thankful for. God will bring them back.

What is Matthew trying to communicate? Many may act happy on the outside but have pain on the inside. God promises to turn mourning into joy.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 - these verses can be gritty and rough, a story of reality. We live in a similar reality.

C S Lewis: "Christianity calls us to enter a great campaign of sabotage".

How should we think about this?

1. J = Jesus. He is the true source of joy. Rev 21:3-5...the hope of the gospel. Our greatest problem is trying to find joy in all the wrong things. Earthly things don't last. Psalm 16...the fullness of joy.

2. O = others. Take the joy of Jesus to others. It's not all about you. Enter into the mess of people. Listen to the stuff you complain about.

JFBC does have an annual memorial service. Not promoted...just for the members who suffered loss in the previous year.

3. Y = Y'all. The church body should be a people of joy.

Martin Lloyd Jones book on Psalm spiritual depression: why so many are turned off by miserable Christians always complaining and grumbling, instead of resonating joy.

Clay: if you are constantly lacking in joy, then you have yet to grasp the good news of Jesus and his joy.

31 in Sunday School, taught by young Charlie - a former classmate of Matthew. He taught on Luke 9, but shared stories of his time in school in Saudia Arabia.

Luke 9:57-10:3

57. A man told Jesus “I will follow you wherever you go”.

58. Jesus said “Foxes have holes, birds have nests,

but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

59. To another Jesus said “Follow me”

the man said “Lord first I must go and bury my father”.

60. Jesus replied “let the dead bury the dead”

as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

61. Another said “I will follow you Lord

but first let me first say goodbye to my family.

62. Jesus said “no one who puts his hand to the plow

and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God”.

1. Jesus appointed 72 others

and sent them out ahead of him, 2 by 2,

to every place that Jesus was about to go.

2. Jesus said to them “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few”

Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

3. I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.

He is the only pitcher to lead the National League in losses for four consecutive seasons, from 1977-1980 with 20, 18, 20, 18 respectively. He was the first player elected to the Hall of Fame who played for the Toronto Blue Jays. HOF in 1997; Played for Toronto in 1987.

The Lost Art

Scorekeeping: a lost art these days for sure. So glad I learned how to score basketball games. When Will played in high school I got plenty of practice. The coach liked me to keep the books because I charted assists and rebounds in addition to shots, both made and missed. But it got to the point where I like not working the scorer’s table so I could keep my own running score system (a little like yours) so I could write a game recap afterwards.

When I buy a ticket to a Braves game I usually get one in the upper deck behind the plate, where lots of older Braves fans have season tickets. Good loyal long time fans. Many keep score. This past year the people on both sides of me were interested in me, asking me lots of questions about why I’d chosen to sit there.

Article: the Hawks official scorekeeper has been at it for 57 years, since the late 1960’s. Says the team is cursed ever since they traded Lennie Wilkins for Walt Hazzard.

Hawks made it to Vegas to continue on in the tournament. The Grizzlies get a much needed break by not advancing.

NEWS: back in the late 1990’s when Will was a kid, a Braves employee gave him a life-sized Chipper Jones growth chart. A long time ago I put it for sale on eBay and pretty much forgot about it, as I don’t sell much on eBay any more. Every few months would lower the price. This week a guy made me an offer, and it sold for $90.00. A Christmas miracle.

Never knew Reid Whitaker was an artist. That sketch with the rain was great. I bring mail to work, and the sketch got shuffled in with other mail until I opened it. Then I took it back home to show Ceil. She loved it too. I need to get into the habit of at least opening the mail at home, since I’m already sorting thru and throwing away the junk mail.

I usually get gas at the RaceTrac near work since I stop there every morning anyway. It is crowded in the morning with landscaping workers fueling up for the day – both gas and food and drinks. I see a few regulars, and know the employees. If I forget to get gas in the morning, I usually stop on the way home at the BP on the corner of Medlock Bridge and Spaulding. Gas is cheaper near work than in East Cobb. Usually I will fill up Ceil’s car at the BP across from Pine Straw Plaza, since it is closest to the house.

I receive the informational emails about senior events at JFBC.

At both JFBC and North Point both Clay and Andy often ask people to not leave until the service is completed. So many use the end of the sermon as a time to stand up and walk out. BUT the good thing about North Point is they know how to not drag out the end of the service with a bunch of “…just one more thing” and “let me remind you of the announcement printed in the bulletin that we already reminded you of two times already”. Some churches will drag out the end of the service. It’s great to worship and praise, but all the “one thing after anothers” just turns people off.

HACK WILSON [SABR Bio] set an offensive record so far ahead of the pack that Babe Ruth predicted it would never be broken. In the offense-happy season of 1930, Wilson had 191 RBI (reported then as 190). Researchers later discovered the record had been underreported. MLB is hesitant to change any historically accepted number unless overwhelming evidence is submitted. Looks like this one whelmed sufficiently: Hack Wilson / MLB. Wilson’s 56 home runs in 1930 stood as the NL standard for 68 years, until both Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire broke it in 1998.

Football Legends

The local TV station in Macon just did a feature on my 1975 state championship team. My teammate Roger is starting to look like an old man. Note that we are referred to as “football legends”.

When Roger learned that he was to be interviewed, he texted our group and asked how we felt about Northeast going for the state championship. He also asked for stories and photos. I sent several, and some were included in the story.

Above front: Danny Kurtz, my weightlifting bud Johnny Dennis, and Jeff Stewart (cousin of Atlanta sports broadcaster Matt Stewart). Back: Mike Wager, Randy Rutherford, and Mike Jolly. I am number 21 below.

Below: 1974 photo. Big Mack Guest blocks, Curtis Wiley cuts upfield, and Jolly looks on.

More 1974: Guest, a high school All American and future all SEC offensive tackle, watches Rutherford run.
1974: RB Walker Hall fights for yardage. David Cape (#51) looks on.
QB Jolly runs the option as Wager (72) looks on,
Jolly seys his charges.
#42 Stan Putnal with the reception. Stan, Tom Poole, Jolly, and I started the fab of taping our shoes.
Jolly passes as 72 Wager, 83 Guest, and 24 Wiley block.
Coach Tommy Seward has stayed in touch over the years. He taught me when I was in junior high.

Our beloved bus driver Bullet got his photo in the game program. Back then he seemed older than he looks here. Bullet always carried his lucky rocks, and took them out and shook them as needed.
1974 pregame meal: Rutherford and Wiley.
QB Mike Jolly as the 1975 AJC AAA state player of the year. Scored the winning TDs in two playoff games. His 23 yard scramble on 4th & 22 helped avenge our only loss to Northside. As a college freshman Jolly ran Pepper Rogers wishbone at Georgia Tech. Never a student, he transferred to Tennessee State.
LB Gerald Payton was a beast. We rode the same bus.
MLB / offense guard Danny Kurtz was nicknamed Radar, for his resemblance to MASH company clerk Walter O'Reilly. A senior during the 1975 season, Danny's 10th grade brothers Ricky (66) and Tim (30) were nicknamed Sonar and Quasar. I hung with the Kurtz brothers in high school. Both Danny and Ricky have passed away, but I am still in touch with Tim.
WR/CB Hodges Glover had passed away before our 40th reunion.
Before the 1975 season Head Coach Gene Brodie drove me downtown to Charley Woods Sporting Goods. We went upstairs to the dusty storeroom so I could get fitted for a square toed kicking shoe. After winning the 1975 state championship, Brodie and his staff left for better conditions and higher pay in Tift County.
FB Rutherford passed away a few years ago. After high school Randy joined the Navy.
Guard Jeff Stewart's older brother was our B team coach. His father coached me one season at Vine Engle Little League. After school Jeff became a fireman, but passed away just a few years ago.
Brodie and offensive coordinator Roy McWilliams. Coach McWilliams was tough, but we loved him. He stays in touch, but is in poor health.
