Invoking Murphy's Law

Some Braves fans are complaining about the four players the Braves drafted: three college pitcher and a Michigan Wolverine power hitting outfielder. Top pick was a Wake Forest lefty who’d made great strides in the past 12 months. A Texas Longhorn right-hander, and a Clemson draft eligible sophomore who’d made All-America as a freshman before getting hurt in his second season. What made these fans such experts that they can complain about the picks? How do they know what the professional scouts saw in these players? How do these fans know what the Braves specific needs are for seasons several years down the road, or what other players were available at the time of their pick? The fans have no idea which players would be easy to sign, and which had other options – making them harder to sign.

Supposedly the Braves top pick was selected with the thinking that since the Braves didn’t have any other day one picks, they wanted to have money available to sign all the players they’d be drafting on day two. How do fans know any of these details? People just want to complain.

We sure live in a different time now. Truth used to be truth. Now truth is relative. Sure those who win the war get to write history. Hard to learn all the facts, especially when I was young in school and really didn’t see how history mattered to me. Now we see that those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it. Young people today say they’re going to read alternate histories to learn the “real” story, but just because something is published in a book doesn’t necessarily mean that it is true – still just someone’s viewpoint. Now more than ever. We all need to read the work of God. That never changes.

It used to be said: you didn’t have to like your superiors, but you had to respect them. This is something else that has changed. Nowadays people don’t respect anyone. Respect has to be earned. Everyone is doing what is right in their own eyes. Used to be that whoever was President was respected as well. Hasn’t been that way for several terms. Would probably do thousands a lot of good to join the military. Seems like more served back before my time than now. My high school had ROTC and many guys were in it. Had a national champion rifle drill team. Supposedly long before me ROTC was required for guys but the program improved when it was made an elective.

Atlanta Mayor Bottoms has stood strong, especially over the past few weeks. Didn’t know she was being considered for VP but guess she’d be as qualified if not more so than anyone else.
Wednesday: got busy and was doing stuff at work until 5:45. Then I stopped by Dollar Tree on the way home. Not much going on. M was at the farm yesterday and back again today. He’s sleeping more and getting a good tan. Supper was some sort of chicken with rice and tossed salad. Very good but slightly spicier than I like. Hallmark Channel movie and some news. Played on my laptop.

Thursday: worked from home. Toasted quesadilla made from Pappasitos leftovers. So good I took a picture (above). Supper was breaded chicken tenders, baked potato wedges seasoned with cheese and other things, and kale with onions. Another excellent meal (below).
Watched an above average Hallmark Channel movie while playing on my laptop. I say Hallmark Channel but sometimes they’re actually on a slightly different channel. Usually you can tell that it’s Hallmark Channel because they use the same actors over and over. They air at least one new movie a week, so they’re constantly filming new movies. Those actors must finish one movie and go right on to the next. The cast of the Sunday night show When Calls the Heart must be especially busy. Those actors are on that show, plus they’re in other Hallmark Channel movies, plus they’re on special Hallmark Channel game shows, cooking shows, daytime talk shows, etc.

The Big Ketch in downtown Roswell has closed down. Was in a busy area but I guess in Roswell people want to be seen dining and walking outside and paying for expensive parking. The Big Ketch was none of that.

As a boy I went to the late 60’s Billy Graham crusade in Atlanta Stadium. Also attended the one in the Georgia Dome many years later.

I hate to travel at night but over the years I’ve had a few of those late nights arrivals as well.
BOB GIBSON [SABR Bio] the former Creighton University Bluejay holds the record for the lowest ERA for a season in the expansion era. Threw a nifty 1.12 ERA in 1968. Not at all bad with a bat, he hit a couple dozen home runs in the majors. Played basketball for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Today’s kicks: my old Nike slides. Man, my slides game is in dire straights. Time to upgrade. Not sure I even need to keep these guys.
