Sermon notes: Clay Smith JFBC
Hebrews 9:15-18
Mass shooting are demonic. This passage is timely. Why did Jesus have to die? Why not just a do-over? Many don’t know why Jesus had to die. You can see it in how non-Christians react, calling God a cosmic child abuser. At the core is the Cross.
Voltaire: Christianity is the most bloody religion. This is why Hebrews was written, to assure that Jesus is enough.
V 15 Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant.
We have a gallon of blood in our body.
Lev 17:11 it is the blood that gives the atonement.
Why did Jesus have to die?
1. To initiate a new covenant, a new will. Someone had to die.
Clay told a joke about a husband telling his wife that should he die, to not let her new husband use my golf clubs. It flopped, which Clay loved.
Blood must be spilled for there to be a new covenant, to have forgiveness. In the name way the new covenant could be initiated.
2. To put away sin. For the redemption of the violations, people missing the mark. We live in a broken / systemic world of sin. We are the victims of sin, but also the perpetrators of sin. Jesus was revealed to put away sin. Leviticus-Moses took 2 goats, the (1) means to take away our sin, and (2) the substitute for us. Jesus was whipped so we could be healed. Our sin put Jesus on the cross. God’s power took away our sin.
3. To propitiate God’s holy wrath v 27-28. So Christ will appear a second time for those who eagerly await him, on the day of atonement.
Some priests are unholy, but The Great High Priest will speak directly to God in our behalf.
Propitiation is appeasing the wrath of God and restoring ourselves to God. Three aspects:
1. My sin arouses the wrath of God, who can’t stand sin.
2. God came to take sin away for us. I John 4:10
3. Jesus is the only one who can do it.
William Cooper wrote the hymn There is a Fount while suffering from depression and anxiety.
Reflect on how much God loves us, that he sent his son to be a propitiation for our sins.
Since last week’s tragic mass shooting at the Covenant Christian School in Nashville, JFBC pastor Clay Smith said he was in meeting with the school that operates on the JFBC campus (where Caleb and MC’s brother Thomas and his wife Holly graduated), addressing and making sure adequate security in place.
Article: in the last election millions of American Christians voted for the devoted Catholic candidate instead of the philandering Republican, but since the Nashville massacre The White House has not mentioned the name of the school where the massacre took place, nor the n religion specifically targeted by the trigger-puller (Christianity) – unlike they did after previous mass shootings that targeted Muslims and gays.
MICKEY MANTLE [SABR Bio] is the only player to pass Babe Ruth for the most career World Series home runs. Ruth’s last WS HR is still a matter of controversy. It was his 15th. Mantle went into the 1964 Series tied with Ruth, then hit three more in that Fall Classic. Mantle was the first switch-hitter in AL history to capture a league batting title. In 1956 (for the only time in his 18-year career), Mantle led the AL (and the majors), with a .353 batting average, nicely rounding out his Triple Crown season. Mantle struck out 17 times in All-Star Games, the most in history. He played in 16 midsummer classics: 1953-62, 1964, and 1967-68.
TED WILLIAMS [SABR Bio] holds the rookie record for most RBI. Williams led the majors with 145 RBI in 1939. Walt Dropo challenged his teammate’s rookie mark with 144 RBI in 1950. In the last two games of the season, Dropo had two more hits, but no more RBI. In each of Williams’ first eight major league seasons, he never scored fewer than 120 times. From 1939-1942 and 1946-1949, Williams averaged 135 runs, leading MLB 4 times and the AL another 2 times. Ted led the AL in doubles twice. Williams had 44 & 39 in 1948 & 1949.
