Sports Illustrated cover story about Bryce Harper. Says over the past 3 years Harper ranked 86th in Wins Above a Replacement player (WAR). Earlier Sports Illustrated had ranked him as the 20th best player in baseball – behind Freddie Freeman. The Braves signed 3B Josh Donaldson, who had been the second most productive hitter over the past few years.

The article quoted an unnamed Braves “source” who said “Harper is great friends with Freddie Freeman and would’ve loved Atlanta, be we just didn’t value him that high” – meaning the Braves didn’t think he was worth a record 13 year $330 million contract. Many will take that quote out of context. Most think Harper can never earn all 13 years of the contract, but some think he’ll be productive well through his 30’s. We shall see.

Monday: Left work at 5:30. Traffic was worse than six. Ceil baked a chicken, boiled broccoli, and made rice with carrots, and baked wedges of potato, sweet potato, and onions. The Neighborhood and The Voice, and bed. M went to a concert at the Masquerade.

Won Ton Tacos sound interesting. There was an Applebees in Roswell just north of Mansell. Later it was called Sweet Potatoes, but not sure how long it lasted. Just north of the Andretti place. This morning I noticed the entire shopping center was being reconstructed.

Tuesday: Worked until 5:30 and drove home. Dropped off a load at Goodwill. Bought an Izzy dress tie from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Got home and took Ceil to Roswell, near Ferguson on Old Roswell. Guess that’s where Andrew works. I’d had a headache all day so I went to bed early. Late to work this morning, as I drove Ceil to school.

Some meetings are going on downstairs, so we’re getting leftovers here in the offer. Breakfast croissants with ham and egg, and later yesterday there was BBQ. I had a little Brunswick Stew, and saved some for today’s lunch. Friday we have our monthly sales lunch meeting: Chickfila box lunches.

Co-worker Johnie Tumlin passed away after a long bout with cancer. Used to play softball with him in the early 90’s. Started at Tull when he was 18 and worked for the company for 48 years. He had hoped to make it to 50 years.

One of the actresses arrested for fraud played the mayor on Ceil’s favorite Sunday night Old West show on the Hallmark Channel. She was one of the good guys. Guess now they’ll have to write her out of the show.

Wednesday: not much here. Busy at work. Clocked out before six but stayed to pay bills. Left at 6:30. Ceil was at small group. Made quesadillas. Watched Jeopardy. Second straight time I got the Final Jeopardy question right.

Q: What 1953 novel ended with the line “Say it ain’t so, Roy?”

I had messed up my mom’s phone so I was on the phone over an hour with her about that. It works except for email. About messed up my phone while trying to fix hers. Ceil came home and went to bed. M went out to his study group. Stayed up to update my blog. Watched some of the ACC tourney, but I’m not a fan of Louisville or Notre Dame.

Answer: It’s the last line from “The Natural” – made into the Robert Redford movie.
