RIP Charlie Fouche

You may remember Sharon Langley, who coached Mighty Mites with me back in the early 80’s. Her husband Charlie passed away yesterday. In addition to teaching and preaching at Clear Springs Bible Church in Calhoun TN, Charlie played football for Charlie Pell at Florida and contributed two research papers and numerous trivia questions to SABR, the Society of American Baseball Research. He interviewed legends Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell.

Sharon met Charlie in seminary, where he had received three doctorates (Theology, Education, and Biblical Studies). Charlie taught at a private school in Dalton, but his health had declined in recent years.

Charlie is a member of the APBA hall of fame, the statistical and strategic dice-activated baseball board games of long ago. He used the games to teach mathematics to his students. Charlie developed and sold APBA cards of great Negro League players, donating the proceeds to the Negro League Museum.

Denison: it wasn’t the nuclear family that kept families together – it was the extended family that was key.

This MSN clickbait article appears to have just been published this week: the favorite foods of the 44 presidents. Is this a slam on Trump (the 45th president)? Actually Grover Cleveland was both the 22th and 24th president. But this wiki list of presidents has yet to be updated with Trump, and fails to list Obama as a past president.

I’m sure GT’s win over #5 Louisville last night has some fans dreaming of a tourney bid. Still unlikely?

Last night was Hot Stove. Left work shortly after five. Stopped at Dicks Sporting Goods to look at shoes. Also looked at backpacks and other items. After breakfast and lunch at Taco Bell I was thinking about skipping supper, but since Costco was on the way I stopped in for a hot dog.

Only eleven in attendance at Hot Stove. No special guest so we sat around and talked about different baseball-related things. Old Tom Curren mentioned something about Willie Mays’ World Series catch in the Polo Grounds off Vic Wertz, who’d been traded from the cellar-dwelling Browns to the pennant-winning Indians that year. I pulled up the photo and added that Joe Garagiola was watching from the window in centerfield. Most there knew those were clubhouse windows, and Tom and another guy had attended games there. Johnny gave me a vintage Braves coaster.

Didn’t feel like turning on the TV when I got home.

Will has five days off in a row, so he’s visiting his friend Harry in Nashville. Friday week Anna has a job interview in Nashville, so Ceil is taking her. Yes Anna already has a job, but right now it is only three days a week and not yet permanent.
