I'd Rather Be Blue

Back when Lauren White was in 9th grade, for the Camp SPdL talent show she lip synched the classic show tune “I’d Rather Be Blue” while wearing roller skates. Hilarious. Classic. Genius. Show stopper. One of the greatest acts in Camp SPdL talent show history. I think I still have the VHS tape. Need to put it on video and share it.

Then last night I was looking up Streisand movies on my TV. The preview for Funny Girl was Barbra on skates singing I’d Rather Be Blue”. I had never known who sang that song before. Lauren nailed Streisand’s performance. I am amazed all over again. Lauren had the grapes on her shoulder and everything.

Streisand famously appeared on SNL's Coffee Talk skit with Mike Myers, Madonna, and Roseanne Barr. Streisand's 48 hour long memoire drones on in excruciating detail. She tells of the delicious chicken sandwich with mayonnaise she ate as an 18 year old meeting with a potential acting teacher. Hope I don't fall asleep while driving.

Speaking of VHS tapes, I gotta find the tape of me and Lang broadcasting NFL highlights at the fanfest before a Super Bowl, back when Lang was in junior high. Lang professionally nailed his recap, and I stumbled through mine since I had re-written the script while we standing in line, and I was speaking from “memory” instead of reading the script. I hope I can find it.

Worked until 615 Tuesday night. C cooked shepherd’s pie and kale. Hard to take a good picture of shepherd's pie.

Wednesday: up early to run at the gym this AM. Then on the way to work I had to make a U turn down by the river due to flooding. More water down there than I’d seen in a long time, but every now and then they have to close the road. I hadn’t seen the water those times.

Long lunch with a vendor, took up from 1130 to 130. Grilled chicken salad at Duluth Diner. Still snowed under with work.

Worked past 630 on Wednesday night. Not a good day, for several of us on the team. C was at small group. I fixed BBQ tacos. Very good. Also finished the coconut cream pie that C had made. Started watching “A Star Is Born” with Streisand and Kristofferson. Later The Voice. A 49 year old member of the Christian group The Newsboys had one of the best auditions in years. Will be interesting to see how far he advances.

WILLIE MAYS [SABR Bio] is the only player to have a four-home run game and a three-triple game. Three 3B on 15-Sep-1960; 4 HR on 30-May-1961. Forty-seven players have tripled thrice 48 times. Sixteen players have homered 4 X in a G. Only Mays is on both lists. His six career stolen bases are the most in All-Star game history. Mays played in 24 ASG.

He was the first player to be a 2-time All-Star game MVP award winner, in 1963 & 1968.

In a world where articles are written by artificial intelligence (or uneducated people with opinions) one has to check carefully to make sure what’s being said is true. And as Denison wrote this morning, in today’s postmodern world, people consider “truth” to be relative, to be whatever that individual’s feelings and experience is – regardless of what the Bible says. See below in red.

DENISON: our “post-truth” culture believes that truth is perception. If we believe something to be true, it is therefore true for us, or so we think. Iain McGilchrist is a neuroscience researcher whose lecture at the 2022 World Summit AI was adapted into an urgent essay in the current issue of First Things. He warns that AI is making people more expendable and less significant: “more jobs become automated. What happens to those who are rendered unemployed? In China wherever they go, buy, whom they are seen with, every word, action is monitored, potentially marked down against them, and freedom is curtailed accordingly. We need to remain in control of machines, not come under their control. I am talking about apocalypse now. We are already surrendering our liberty, our privacy, our dignity, our time, our values, and our talents to the machine. We must leave human affairs to humans. If not, we sign our own death warrant”. McGilchrist’s is not alone: leaders from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and other AI labs are also warning that the technology they are building could pose an existential threat to humanity on a par with pandemics and nuclear war.
