Never Gets Old

Just retold the classic Jay Leno story: when he was just getting famous in Hollywood and his parents came out to visit. They were in an elevator when the doors opened and the rock star Sting stepped in. Jay was excited: he got to introduce his parents to be big star. “Hey Sting! These are my parents. Mom, dad, this is…Sting!” Jay’s dad pipped up, and asked “Sting? What kind of name is that? Stingman?” As Lang says, that joke never gets old.

Speaking of Late Night, I stumbled across a clip of Letterman reuniting Sonny & Cher.

Back when I was at GT in the late 70’s the school newspaper would include Arby’s coupons. You could get a roast beef sandwich, two potato cakes, and a little cup of slaw for a dollar. A good deal. And that was back when they put a decent amount on roast beef on the sandwich. Sometimes I would spend two dollars. We’d walk through the old tunnel underneath 75/85 from the Tech campus and walk over to the old Arbys, and eat outside on the tables.

Later when I flunked out of Tech and had to take classes at Dekalb Community College in Clarkston (with Debra Head – shoutout!), the community college newspaper had coupons for a buy one / get one Whopper from Burger King. Plus there was a punch card to buy five Whoppers and get the 6th for free. So I was getting eleven Whoppers for the price of five.

DENISON: Yesterday” is one of the most haunting songs in the Beatles’ 213-song repertoire. Now, nearly 60 years later, Paul McCartney has explained its emotional bridge:

Why she had to go?

I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.

I said something wrong.

Now I long for yesterday.

It turns out, McCartney had a conversation in which he embarrassed his mother. Then she died at the age of 47  when Paul was just 14 years old. Now he wishes he had an eraser he could use to rub that “yesterday” moment away. Paul McCartney reveals his “Yesterday” inspiration (denisonforum.org).

Worked late Tuesday, then home. Mexican for supper. Ceil was getting clay ready for her Wednesday class. Watched The Voice. Went to bed a 930. Up early Wednesday to lift weights at the gym.

Worked until 6 pm Thursday night. Not making much headway. Stopped by Goodwill to drop off more donations. Ceil cobbled together a supper of steak stir fry, cole slaw, and a potato dish. I liked it. Young Sheldon and So Help Me Todd, with a rare appearance of guest star Sandra Bernhard.

Up early to lift weights Friday morning.
