Top NFL Playoff Games OF ALL TIME

Top NFL playoff games of all time. Actually from 1933-1980 since the Instagram account “NFLLists” posted a top 20 “all-time” list only going back 40 years. Well here are seventeen classic playoff games from 1980 and before. I left out Super Bowls.

17. 1978 NFC Wild Card: bartender / kicker Tim Mazzetti twice boots the Falcons past the Eagles.


16. 1977 AFC Division Playoff: “The Ghost to the Post” over the shoulder TD pass to Raiders TE Dave Casper beats Colts.

15. 1966 NFL Championship: Packers 34 Cowboys 27 in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. Packer DB Tom Brown secures the victory with an interception in the end zone. Voted one of the top ten games in the first 50 years.

14. 1937 NFL Championship: Redskins 28 Bears 21 on Wrigley Field. Sammy Baugh. One of the ten greatest games of the first 50 years.

13. 1980 NFC Divisional Playoff: Dallas upsets Falcons on last second TD pass from Danny White to Drew Pearson.

12. 1933 NFL Championship: Bears 23 Giants 21 Mel Hein Ken Strong Bronko Nagurski Red Grange. One of the ten greatest games of the first 50 years.

11. 1940 NFL Championship Game: Bears beat Redskins 73-0. George Halas. Sid Luckman George McAfee Bulldog Turner. One of the ten greatest games of the first 50 years.

10. 1965 NFL Championship: Packers 23 Browns 12 in the mud. Voted one of the top ten games in the first 50 years.

9. 1950 NFL Championship: Browns 30 LA Rams 28. Voted one of the top ten games in the first 50 years. Otto Graham. Marion Motley. Lou Groza. Paul Brown. Norm Van Brocklin.  


8. 1965 NFL Divisional Playoff: Colts 13 Packers 10 in overtime. With Unitas and Couzzo injured, young Colts head coach Don Shula inserts RB Tom Matte as quarterback. 


7. 1962 AFL Championship: Dallas Texans 20 Houston Oilers 17 in two overtimes in a bitter 40 mph wind. Abner Haynes flubs coin toss, declares  “we’ll kick at the clock” - giving up the ball and the wind. Texans win anyway.

6. 1974 AFC Divisional Playoff: Raiders edge Dolphins in the “The Sea of Hands” game. Stabler escapes rush, throws floating TD pass to RB Clarence Davis.
5. 1975 NFC Divisional Playoff: Dallas beats Vikings with the first hail mary – Staubach to Drew Pearson.
4. 1971 AFC Divisional Playoff: Dolphins beat Chiefs in the longest overtime game in playoff history.
3. 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff Game: The Immaculate Reception. Steelers edge Raiders. Launches the Steeler Dynasty. Bradshaw to Franco off Frenchy Fuqua for the win.
2. 1967 NFL Championship Game: Packers beat Cowboys in the Ice Bowl. Starr’s QB sneak behind guard Jerry Kramer’s block for the win. One of the top ten games of the first 50 years.

1. 1958 NFL Championship Game: Colts beat Giants in sudden death overtime. Unitas. Alan Ameche scores winning TD. The game that launched the NFL into the steamroller it is today. One of the ten greatest games of the first 50 years.
