There was a photo detailing just a few of Ted Williams' achievements. Others added how much better his stats would've been had Ted not missed parts of 5 seasons fighting in two wars, flying combat missions. And some lunkhead says yeah, but he played before baseball was fully integrated. What? No mention of how there were only what, 16 teams, so only the best of the best made major league rosters. Only 4 man pitching rotations. Plus travel by train. Poor lighting. Doubleheaders. No air conditioning. And another thing: Ted himself was half Mexican!
Conditions were so poor, players had to be tough. I'm pretty sure the top players from back in the day would do just fine in today's game. Same with Yogi Berra, who like most players had to work other jobs in the offseason. Yogi and his neighborhood pal Joe Garagiola sold Christmas trees in their hometown, St. Louis.
I hear there is a Netflix documentary on Yogi: "It Ain't Over Till It's Over". There's another documentary about Bill Veeck's son that was good.
Watch the Jackets? Horrendous start. Couldn't have been worse. Down 14-0 after 9 minutes. On pace to lose 84-0. Caused me to send a couple of tweets that didn't age well. But after that Tech outscored UCF 30-3.
After the first ten minutes everything seemed to go wrong for UCF. GT didn't play perfect but ran the ball well. All the breaks and penalties and noncalls were in Tech's way. QB King looked like he hurt his ankle on that horsecollar, but came back to lead another scoring drive, and finish the game. Jackets should be even better next year. This year there were 2 or 3 other games they should've won.
The father of GT QB Haynes King had said his son came to Tech only to compete, not for NIL money. I'm looking for a similar quote from the QB himself, saying how he was a Jacket for life. Was the quote deleted? He's done so well, you'd think another college would be enticing him with NIL to come be their QB. We shall see. After next season it could be Notre Dame knock knock knocking on King's door.
I type this, and King throws an interception. He's thrown a few this year.
UCF in all black. GT in all white. How original. Jackets wearing special helmets with only gold trim. No navy trim or stripes - just navy masks. Would've been a good time to break out the gold masks.
Friday: left work at 1 pm. Got home and C made me drive her on errands the rest of the afternoon. Stir fry for supper.
Today: up early to play golf. By myself. Hit a lot of balls.
After golf I headed to Dekalb Farmers Market. Long line of cars to get in, from three different directions. By the time I checked out the building had reached maximum occupancy, so they were only letting people in when someone else was leaving.
