My high school friend and teammate Johnny Dennis passed away last week. He was 65. Gentle and humble, a deacon at his church. My sophomore and junior years he and I lifted weights together three times a week after school, just he and me. Johnny has been part of my high school football team’s group text, and it was a delight to see him at the team’s 40th reunion a few years ago. He passed way too early.
Deceased from our team include #20 wingback Hodges Glover, #42 WR Stan Putnal, #64 LB Danny “Radar” Kurtz, #33 FB Randy Rutherford, #64 OG Jeff Stewart, #66 OT Ricky “Sonar” Kurtz, and now #60 OG Johnny Dennis. And Coach McWilliams is in poor health.
All-ACC RB Shipley was the only player in college football last year with 1100 yards rushing, 200 yards receiving, and 300 return yards. Someone needs to tell him that return yards don’t help get you in the hall of fame – right Herschel?
Speaking of kickoff returns, some think Devin Hester should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I’ll have to run some numbers, if I haven’t already.
Today is Bob Uecker’s 89th birthday. Here’s an article with a few great Uecker stories.
Wednesday: stayed busy. Skipped the gym but got up and cleaned out part of the garage. My friend Lee picked me up around 8:35 and we were on the road by 8:40. Ate lunch at a BBQ place. BBQ, Brunswick stew, and slaw. A considerable upgrade to our 20 year-old equipment. Lee helped with the installation, which included a quick trip to Home Depot. All this took until 4:30 pm.
C was stressed, so I helped with housework. Shivonne arrives today to spend a long weekend. C ran to the grocery, so I finally rested. M is sick. Supper was Mexican. Had to pick up my car from Roswell, so on the way back I stopped by Kroger for Gatorade for M.
This morning I ran at the gym. Had to run an errand during lunch. Busy catching up on emails, since I didn’t monitor them yesterday. Tonight was a men’s dinner at JFBC.
CHRISTIAN YELICH [B-R Bio] toiled for the sub-.500 Marlins for his first 5 seasons in the majors, (contributing a respectable 3.5 WAR, only to be traded to the top-tier Brewers, and saw his WAR output nearly double, and won a near-unanimous MVP. Yelich played for Miami from 2013-2017, was traded to Milwaukee for Lewis Brinson, Isan Díaz, Monte Harrison & Jordan Yamamoto and was NL MVP in 2018. His seasons since his 2018-2019 peak dropped to a WAR of 1.5. Yelich’s mother, Alecia Yelich is often seen with him and the Brewers. Yelich’s great-grandfather, Fred Gehrke, played mostly for the L.A. Rams and was (probably) the first to design their now-famous helmet logo. The helmet design earned Gehrke a spot in the pro football hall of fame.
Man I need to go to NFA. It is Dunwoody, right? I think I will go next Tuesday when C is at her women’s ministry.
I know Drew Kelly watches EVERY Braves game (just kidding).
Had a dream last night I was eating at a BBQ restaurant with some folks from work.
Denison: a perceptive friend responded to yesterday’s Daily Article by noting liberal advocates’ “inability to see they demand from Christians the very thing they condemn Christians of. If we have no right to share our beliefs, why do they?”
Frederick Buechner said of “compassion”: “It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.”

Article: a new gold goat-horned demon statue now stands atop a New York courthouse. With a judicial lace apron “meant to pay homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg”. The purpose of the statue is to kick off a “cultural reckoning” to “reflect 21st-century social mores”.
Have a nice day.
