The Moops

The “Moops” bit on Seinfeld was never one of my favorites, though it was appropriate coming from George Costanza. Still the joke has become legendary, so much so that the Charleston RiverDogs wore alternate “Moops” jerseys celebrating the joke. Though there was no real misprint on the Trivial Pursuit game card, the RiverDogs handed out altered cards with Moops as the answer.

Saturday night I flipped on Chargers@Jaguars. I knew Ceil wouldn’t mind watching Trevor Lawrence. Then Lawrence threw three interceptions in the first quarter and a fourth in the second. The Jags trailed 27-0 so we went to bed. We learned the next morning that Jacksonville outscored LA 31-3 the rest of the way to win the game.

DENISON: The Jaguars achieved a “stirring, miraculous comeback victory” Saturday night, overcoming a 27–0 deficit to win their playoff game. Afterward, sports journalist Jay Busbee reported the Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson introduced to the team in training camp a philosophy endorsed by motivational speaker and former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, a worldview in a single word: “Good.” “When things are going bad, don’t get all bummed out,” Willink has said. “Don’t get frustrated. No, just look at the issue and say: ‘Good.’” After Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions in the first half of Saturday’s game, a lineman came up to him and said “Good.” Lawrence threw four touchdowns (three in the second half) as his team made history.

Shepherd's pie for supper Friday night. Slept in Saturday morning, skipping golf. Hey, it was 29 degrees. Stayed upstairs past 10:30 am cleaning and organizing. C fixed me an eggy boy. We kept W&MC’s big dog Okie, and Winnie is super jealous of any attention we give Okie. Ceil was busy all day celebrating a friend’s birthday. The ladies went for facials and ate supper at an Italian place in Sandy Springs.

I met five friends for lunch at Righteous Que. Stayed chatting for over two hours. Got home from lunch and found the movie The American President with Michael Douglass & Annette Bening, then When Harry Met Sally with Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan, then You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan.

You’ve Got Mail has many other stars: Dabney Coleman, Dave Chappelle, Parker Posey, Greg Kinnear, Jean Stapleton, and even the “pinky toe” lady from Seinfeld, actress Veanne Cox, who played author Miranda.

At church yesterday I wasn’t feeling like taking notes, but Clay started his sermon encouraging people to take notes (he usually doesn’t say anything like that). Clay said his sermon had a lot of points and “lists”. At JFBC the “bulletins” don’t have much info or announcements any more but do contain a sermon outline with blanks to fill in. We enter the gym for the service upstairs where these bulletins are not handed out. Andy Stanley’s sermons were always well organized, often with 3-4 points. But Louie Giglio never had organized points and it was hard to take notes. But Louie’s sermons always reveal God, Jesus, his love and majesty. Bob Marsh always preached sermons that were note taking worthy. Bryant Wright’s sermons were certainly Baptist. Clay’s sermons are quite relevant to today. Last week at the end of his sermon leading into the invitation Clay really started preaching the gospel, preaching as opposed to communicating.

Didn’t do much yesterday afternoon except have football on the TV. Flipped on Giants@Vikings and watched 30 minutes before realizing it was the NFL Network replay of a previous game. I flipped over to Buff/Miami. I saw the call where they gave the Bills a crucial 4th quarter first down. Looked like a bad spot to me. They didn’t even measure it. The replay did not overturn the spot. I saw the female referee over near the sideline, but I don’t think it was her call. I watched a little of the SFvsSeattle. McCaffrey had a big game.

Woke up early this morning to go to the gym. Arrived to find an empty parking lot – the gym was closed for the holiday. Drove to work instead.

JIM GILLIAM  [SABR Bio] is the only player to play on eight World Series teams, winning four times in 1955, 1959, 1963 & 1965 with Brooklyn / Los Angeles. Also played in Dodgers WS in 1953, 1956 & 1966. Played on the 1948 Baltimore Elite Giants who lost to the Homestead Grays for the title of the Negro National League. Jim was the first 20th century second baseman to have twelve assists in one game, on 21-Jul-1956. Gilliam was a member of the first all-switch-hitting infield, playing third base on the 1965 LA team with Wes Parker at 1B, Jim Lefebvre at 2B & Maury Wills at SS.

I wonder which injustices MLK Jr. would be fighting today, if he was still alive?
