Ironman 2

IRONMEN: These days players miss games to stay rested for the playoffs. AC Green has the consecutive games played record with 1192 – over 14-1/2 seasons. The active record is 200 by DeAndre Jordan. Freddie Freeman has the longest MLB streak (less than 250). Last Sunday he begged Fredi to play him but only got to pinch hit (he homered).

Did you know? Cal Ripken’s record streak stretched over 16 seasons. Brett Farve started every game for over 18-1/2 seasons, taking more of a beating than Ripken. Which streak is more impressive? The longest current streak in the NFL is Eli Manning with 167 games – almost 10-1/2 years. Speaking of Manning, the back page article in this week’s Sports Illustrated was written by Peyton. Good stuff.

VJ Singh used to play a lot of tourneys. These days more and more star golfers are more picky about the tourneys they play. Wasn’t there a guy on the Hawks who never missed much – some Wilkins guy? Maddux and Glavine went years and years without missing a start. Maddux tried to stay warm during rain delays so he could return to the game.
Brett Farve had beat Jim Marshall’s iron man record. Marshall was famous for picking up the fumble and running the wrong way (above), but later in the same game Marshall caused the 49er fumble that Carl Eller picked up and returned for the game-winning touchdown for Minnesota.
The Vikings’ Purple People Eaters (above L-R Alan page, Jim Marshall, Carl Eller, and Gary Larson) were supposed to be one of the greatest front fours in history, but all the teams that beat Minnesota in the Super Bowl said the weak link was Marshall. Oakland and Pittsburgh and Miami all ran all over him. Too bad, because I always liked the guy. Note: Alan Page went on to be a state supreme court justice in Illinois.

The Hawks don’t want another Joe Johnson, that’s for sure. The Spurs were so successful without a megastar. No LeBron or Kobe. They did have Tim Duncan (one of the greatest big men ever), Tony Parker (an elite point guard), and Mano Ginobli (an excellent shooter). Also other fine players along the way like David Robinson, etc. How many championships has Kobe won without Shaq (or a great supporting cast)? Jordan always had Pippen. Bird had Parrish, McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Ainge. How many championships has Dirk won? Or Carmelo? The Hawks could add a few more really good players to Teague and Horford and be just fine. It’s always going to be tough to get past LeBron.

Speaking of LeBron, I sold an old Cleveland LeBron jersey this weekend for $25.00. Also a pair of shorts, a TCU sweatshirt, pair of fishing pants, and an old Charlotte Hornets lapel pin.

Will’s former classmate is dancing on the cruise ship Carnival Inspiration. Is that a decent outfit? During her shore leave she volunteered at an orphanage.

REID: Bird missed 169, Magic missed 590. I don't know about a super star, but the Hawks need a "go to" guy for the end of games.

I have never been on Carnival because it is generally known as a "party cruise line", and I have heard complaints about late night noise, and lots of drinking. However, you never know, might not be bad.

ME: They are building a The Big Ketch in north Fulton / Roswell / Alpharetta.

In 1977 I took typing as a senior in high school and made an A, but these days I’m not much more than a two fingered typist, using less than 5% of what I learned in class.
